Murlocs are an amphibious race of fish like creatures hailing from Azeroth. They have different adaptations based on where they live (Ones living in the deep having anglerfish like lures), and are rarely seen inland.
While generally thought to be stupid, which they are, they're not as dumb as most people think. They're very smart when it comes to aquatic hunting, survival, and knowing their strengths and weaknesses. While unadvanced, they do find a niche role for survival in the ever changing world of Azeroth.

Murloc culture and religion is rather simple, but interesting. Their religion is always changing, and not standard between different clans. They follow one ever changing "god", based on whatever the biggest bad of the sea is at the time. For example, if they see a whale, they'll revere it for its size and idolize it. If a shark should happen to kill the whale, they'll then worship the shark for killing their old god and being stronger.
Culture wise, they're very handy at crafts using things from the sea. From ornate crafted sea shells, to their huts, everything comes from the sea and will return to the sea. They do also have a language that has 17 different dialects based on location. The titles are all in the dialect of Nerglish I translated.
The origins of Murlocs are unknown. They are a race as old as time, and their language is unknown to all but a select few who live among them. There are also no records of their past, but there are a few speculations. The most popular being Neptulon the Elemental Lord of the sea created them because he was bored and their dull nature amused him.

The Jinyu, an ancient race of fish-people and elders, are actually just murlocs who happened to inhabit land near an enchanted pool which changed them to be smarter and more humanoid. These Jinyu formed a long time ago, but are decently new in the murloc timeline, if that puts a perspective on how old this race truly is.
Murgul are another race of Murloc, but instead of mutation via magic water to become smarter, they became savage and brutal, losing all culture and gaining a murderous intent.

It should be noted, that because of their affinity for water and closeness to Neptulon, some Murlocs can practice magic and become shamans, but are very limited due to their intelligence. These are very isolated cases.
