Weirdly enough, there's pretty strong regional divisions of which term is used. I live in western NY, but a lot of the students at my school come from New York City. Most of them have never even heard of the term "pop" for soft drinks before, and they're straight-up flabbergasted when they find out that's what we call it out here. gotta love the deep south, just calling everything coke, logic be damned

I've lived in Texas all my life and I swear I've never ******* heard someone say "coke", I've only heard "soda".
#70 to #22 - anon (10/28/2015) [-]
Well it is the most recognized brand on the planet, so even someone who doesn't speak the English wouldn't be hard pressed to understand the reference.
User avatar #91 to #70 - mrthezho (10/28/2015) [-]
But they would probably think you were referring to coca cola if you said coke, not just soda in general. I know I would.
User avatar #74 to #22 - itskennyandjosh ONLINE (10/28/2015) [-]
I call it soda
User avatar #87 to #22 - derpwolf ONLINE (10/28/2015) [-]
The weird thing is that I used to live over near Atlanta, and I actually heard people say soda when they weren't talking about coke products, then say coke for anything that was a Coke product. There was a good deal of both.
#92 to #22 - anon (10/28/2015) [-]
I lived in Texas and South Carolina, and we usually said "Dr. Pepper."
Most places carry it, and being from Texas gives it a +2 as an origin bonus.
User avatar #31 to #22 - kibbleking (10/28/2015) [-]
whole ******* map should be red. Everyone says soda.
User avatar #104 to #31 - nickelakon (10/28/2015) [-]
Im from Vermont, so I always called it soda
Started moving around and then went to the Army
PA was pretty divided
IN most people would say pop unless you said soda first.
OK people said pop almost all the time
User avatar #96 to #31 - romuloid (10/28/2015) [-]
***** go visit any of the states on that map and I guarantee you they'll say what that map says they'll say.
User avatar #95 to #31 - thesecretbear (10/28/2015) [-]
I'm from Iowa and I say pop. Map seems accurate.

I grew up in western NY too, everyone said pop, but that sounded stupid to me, so I said soda.
User avatar #111 to #63 - heilhotwheels ONLINE (10/28/2015) [-]
Pop is ******* awful. I usually go soda as well but sometimes I will just say coke out of convenience I am from Texas originally

I'm from Louisiana and I can confirm that the generic term for a soft drink is indeed "coke". Legit, if you go to a fast food restaurant and they ask "what kind of coke do you want?", just assume it means soft drink rather than an actual form of Coca Cola (even if they serve Pepsi instead of Coke).
User avatar #24 to #22 - wertologist (10/28/2015) [-]
Why is there a "soft drink" color if it's not even on the map? Is it there and I'm suddenly color blind? I can't find any orange on that map.
User avatar #25 to #24 - thepizzadevourer ONLINE (10/28/2015) [-]
It was the control, I guess. There's no region that people actually call it "soft drink" enough to have a yellow region, but it probably subtly influences the color in a few spots.
#23 to #22 - asotil (10/28/2015) [-]
>Coke

"Hey Cletus ya want sum Coke?"
"What kind ya got?"
"Coke, Mountain Coke, Not-Coke, Orange Coke, sum ******* foreign ******** word Coke, grape Coke"
"Gimme a beer coke"

I live in El Paso, part of western Texas with more Mexicans than normal people, and honestly you'd be amazing how often those sorts of terms are genuinely used.

In the Midwest we say pop. In the south they say coke (Which is retarded.) and most other places they say soda. There are exceptions but that's generally how it works.

I never realized this until I left my state for the first time and went south, where everyone looked at me like a nutjob when I asked what type of pop they had.
User avatar #80 - sphincterface ONLINE (10/28/2015) [-]
