I thought those things had generators underneath.

The generators are in the head, connected to a gear reduction system. The vanes are so huge that if they spin fast enough to directly turn the generator they blow apart like the GIF in post #7. They're supposed to maintain a constant speed that's regulated by a motor changing the angle of the individual blades to compensate for wind speed. This keeps the generator speed constant and reduces wear and tear on it.
