Anyone other than me make knives? I make them out of 1095 steel & 5160 spring steel. I use a forge, anvil, and hammer. I can only make knives under 7 inches with a full tang although I'm just messing with some rat tail tangs at the moment. I can't make **** because the amount of heat to work with a soft anvil is to much and I found a decent anvil on ebay without a big shipping tag, so I should be able to smith around early January !

Do you do your own heat treatment? If not, there are several steels you may want to try.

I make my knives out of anything I can get my hands on: Car springs, rebar, old bolster chisels, files, etc.

What's your forge burning?

I burn propane. I started off with an old charcoal grill, some black iron fittings, piece of pipe for the fittings, and a hairdryer. The old forge burned coal that I got of the railroad ( it was slung all over the place), but didn't get hot enough to work anything but iron. So I switched to propane and firebrick, I was happy with the performance increase to say the least and the lack of smoke made it possible to not smell like a coal mine! What are you paying for on leaf springs btw?

I've got coil springs, not leaf springs. Partly because they feel a bit like cheating, partly because the ones that I used before where full of so many dents and marks it wasn't and easier and partly because I haven't found any.
I got a small coil for about £10 from a breakers yard, and a bigger one came from having to replace it in my car. Mostly I just wonder around second hand markets buying old tools.
Do you just do knives, or have you branched out? I'm trying my hand at a rose at some point soon.

I haven't branched out much yet, I'm just going to make knives until I can get them to my preference in quality (O.C.D. is a bitch). What do you quench with, and how do you temper. I use vegetable oil for my 5160 & heavily salted/boiling water for my 1095.

I do everything in plain water, harder to do, but it makes the steel harder. As to tempering I have a blowtorch and a lot of care.
Also, I would suggest that you find at least one other thing you would like to make. Perfecting knives is something that can take ages and you need some kind of intermission just because of the frustration of getting so many tiny things wrong.
