kids these days

YOUR generation was the generation where
two teachers could afford to buy a 4-
bedroom house in San Diego, CA and then
afford the mortgage and mise 2 kids in
private school (my parents did this).
YOUR generation was the generation where
one parent could work in Financial Aid at
the local college and the other could mise 2
kids in a 3 bedroom house (my
coworker did this).
YOUR generation was the generation where
you could wash dishes to put yourself
through college and law school (my uncle
did this).
MY generation can' t buy a home when the
average cost is and a combined
income of two teachers is only , and
they have to pay 35% income to rent, let
alone trying to afford children.
MY generation has both parents working,
one or both working 2 jobs just to buy food,
not even able to afford a family vacation
every December.

I was searching jobs and feeling depressed already when I see this

It hasn't helped my mood

if you don't have any major criminal convictions look into becoming a jailer. They make good money and at my current jail I make 30,000 a year and at my last jail I was making $18.32 an hour. I love being a jailer. good money, common sense and a good paycheck.

just apply at AT&T to install internet and TV. Im only 20, and i get $18 an hour

Hint hint, volunteering sounds bad (no money involved), but if you join a volunteer fire department, they'll pay for your certifications, and you can then go on to get a job as a firefighter or EMS personnel, which could bring you more into the medical or fire investigation fields. Plus, volunteer departments are really hurting for members.

If that interests you, anyway.
User avatar #222 to #145 - manofparody (11/01/2015) [-]
Not my area. Our fire department is so God Damn full of volunteer members and actual fighters, that you're more likely to get struck by lightning than get hired on.

Also, EMS people here get laid off and rehired every couple months. It's spotty at best.
User avatar #245 to #222 - dammriver (11/01/2015) [-]
Eh, it was worth a shot.. My area has a steady call volume, but we only have around 15 active volunteer members. Of those, only like 10 or so are fire certified...
User avatar #248 to #145 - Yukimaru (11/01/2015) [-]
Problem with volunteering for anything is some people just don't have the time for that. Most of my time is taken up by work to barely afford to live.

If you're looking for a minimum wage job, a lot of places are willing to hire you. Especially bigger companies. If you have access to transportation, try increasing your job distance range. Companies like UPS (I wouldn't recommend this unless you are a stubborn and somewhat fit **** ) pay good money and are always hiring, especially during holidays. UPS pays $11/hr. At least in my state. Wal-mart seems to hire often and doesn't pay that bad given that they just upped the minimum wage to around $9.50/hr or so. If you're like me, Fast food and restaurants might not be your thing. But they hire frequently as well, especially locally. I currently work at a mini-warehouse uniform company sorting clothes, unloading trucks, and keeping the warehouse in shape. I found it using a job website that lists all the jobs in my area. It's pretty helpful and can see who's hiring around you. availablejobstoday.com/go/

Apart from that, some advice I can give is ALWAYS call back, depending on the job, around 2-5 days later to see where you are in the application process. That's the only reason I have my job now, is because I called back and the other guy applying didn't. Also, when making a resume, list everything you've accomplished. Even if it's something stupid like working Microsoft Office programs like Word or graduating high school. If you got a scholarship, put it on there or if you were apart of a club that is kinda cool, put it on there as well. Make yourself seem good.

I grew up in poverty, actual poverty days without food, and utilities off for weeks; I know in some countries its a **** tonne worse, but in the US its being poor. neither of my parents went to college, and I didn't have a dime to my name to go. I joined the military, served 6 years, and got my body pretty messed up. Im now disabled, and know my job prospects have been limited because of it, so I was smart and decided to pursue a degree in engineering, where I won't to worry about my body giving out under the stresses of manual labor. I live on a fixed income and still manage to squirrel away a few hundred dollars every month for my dream - Buying land up north and building my own cabin. If you bust your ass, plan properly, and stick to your plan building a life is doable. Ill be 27 when I finish my degree, and 28 by the time I have my house and land paid off completely. Theyre not handing out free jobs and houses, and yeah the previous generation had it easier, but you have the tools to do so much more today. You couldnt check out the job market or housing market in a new city let alone new state, without going there and putting yourself out there. These days you can find out everything you could want or need to know before deciding to start on a plan.

What was your experience in the military like? I've been very seriously considering it since graduating. I'm going see a recruiter Wednesday, but if you could share anything from your experience that you'd think would be good/helpful to know it would be appreciated.
User avatar #201 to #188 - usarmyexplain (11/01/2015) [-]
First thing's first, it will benefit you, but it will only benefit you to as much as you can get out of it. Anyone can join and just ride out a few years and collect a pay check, it's not that hard, once you get done with training and into a routine it's just like a regular job a really demanding one It's up to you to make the army work for you. Get tuition assistance, take correspondence courses, learn valuable skills like how to deal with people and exploit bureaucracies or how to maintain a vehicle. Save up money, build your credit and use the opportunities that companies present for service members like interest free loans.

My experience in the army was that I liked the army, I didnt always like the other people in the army with me, and rarely liked the people running the show. But it's not that hard to succeed and thrive, they even give you **** tons of material written at an 8th grade level to explain exactly what you should do every day.
User avatar #213 to #201 - desmondxburton ONLINE (11/01/2015) [-]
Thanks for the input. The main reason I've been looking into the military leaning towards the navy atm is because of the opportunities that could come from serving. I also feel like it seems to be the best first step on the path for me to make something good/productive out of my life. I will keep the things you said in mind we I go see the recruiter.
User avatar #205 to #201 - kyojinn (11/01/2015) [-]
I would say this is pretty ******* spot on in terms of my experiences as well.
Its really easy once you get into a routine, but sometimes people are assholes, and you gotta learn to put up with that, and make use of the tools presented to you. Networking with other service members, and contractors is a big deal as well, those connections can go a long ways towards making your service career, and post service career a lot easier.
I was in an Airborne unit stationed in Europe, I traveled the world, partied like a rockstar, and took in the historic sites...then I went to the korengal and wardak and earned my pay. There is a lot of mundane crap to deal with on a daily basis, but if you're not wealthy, or well connected the opportunities the service offer you won't be found elsewhere. My only regret is not taking advantage of correspondence courses while enlisted, due to you know, the excessive partying and travel.

Man, I got stationed at Benning, I lived in a swamp, I worked in a swamp, when I went on field exercises I was in another swamp, during my time off I marinated in the swamp I did go other places but that part of georgia is basically a swamp . I didnt have time for correspondences courses because I was busy doing the GWOT or learning new ways to GWOT. Iraq was a relief just because it was dry enough that my swamp ass could dry out.

if it makes you feel better, after vicenza, I got stationed in fort ******* bliss. with the testing brigade.... #212 to #208 - usarmyexplain (11/01/2015) [-]
I kind of like the desert, I dont hold you going to Europe against you. I'm kind of glad I didnt go to Europe, dont take this the wrong way, but Europe based units always seamed to have poor morale when they deployed.
Benning was so miserable that morale would go up when we got deployment orders. Kind of like "Going to the field? At least I dont have to stay in the barracks" kind of thing. It also got everyone away from the hookers they married on their first weekend after replacement.

I had to borrow money to get to work some weeks, but I got a promotion and a raise, then another raise, so now I'm able to properly provide for myself again.

I'm not making vast sums of money, but I'm also trying to better myself.

Another 28 year old vet here. Did 4 years in the Navy Active Duty, got out and started up a business while concurrently taking classes and living on G.I. Bill Stipend. My house became a halfway home for vets, and I couldn't put effort into my business because I was too busy nursing my comrades back to health. My business failed, I lost the house, and declared bankruptcy to get out of 25K of debt.

I moved to South Korea near my old duty stationed like some of my friends who never left, then the government shut down and took my benefits with it. With no fallback plan I was deported back to America. On the streets for the third time in so many years, I was looking for a way out halfway through my next semester, and started banging on the doors of the old recruiter's office. Army was the only one that'd hire me back in at a decent rank, but I got put on hold due to an appendectomy. While on hold I got the word that my stipend would cease by the end of the semester, so I signed on to Army ROTC and earned my way back into the "getting paid to go to school" bracket. Now I'm assessed Reserve and married to an Active Duty Sailor coming out of Coronado. I'm waiting on word from Cadet Command on whether I'll be given Medical Services and access to the AMEDD program to finish my Doctorate, so wish me luck guys.

They're making me into Psychological Research so I can finally make a dent on the "Veteran 22". The VA's not gonna do **** about our suicide rate, so something needs to be in within the military structure and I'll be the only person Active Duty working on that project. Once they let me back in Active Duty, they're gonna have to remove me with a crowbar this time.

I'm just glad I was outside of combat zones most my career. As bad as it sounds, I'd've never been any use to anyone if I'd've been in Korengal or some place nasty. I'll do a lot more good working on the veteran suicide rate than out there in combat. My reflexes are **** .

Swear to god on my life, on my sweet mother that I will be making 20k a month after this year, I'm almost 22. I get what this post is saying, but honestly things maybe be slightly harder, but for the most part is just different, different ways to make money. I put my time in, I went through a short (but hefty) grind of 2.5 years to gain the experience necessary to be successful, I bit the bullet and took risks. I don't believe poor people deserve to have it hard at all. But stop complaining(not specifically directed at OP), I have a short years worth of recruiting experience, and 50% percent of people have garbage experience, another 25% can't communicate well enough to ever attain a leadership role, unless they practice of course. I get it, high school didn't teach you anything, neither did college. And it will continue to be that way(unless you are in the sciences, college good them). Everyone complains the system doesn't work well/for them. Please if you are reading this, you need to stop and think, analyze the system that you live in and thrive off of. Understand how money works, how to influence others, how to build something, become an investor and learn how to build wealth(even like 500$ is a start). And for god's sake please stop complaining about college debt. The only reason anyone besides a scientist(in all meanings) goes to college is to get that piece of paper that symbolizes "Wow you were able to put up with mindless work for 4-5 years, maybe you are capable of doing mindless work for us?" You see that? Right there. Boom goes the dynamite. That's all college is for most of us. Wanna know another way to express those qualities of yourself? GOOD work experience, not waiting tables or stacking shelves. AND achievements! Not volunteer work or a 4.0, Google doesn't even wanna look at your GPA anymore, its inconsistent with performance. Now is the time gents, you are young, go fail, go take some crazy internship, go do some sales, entry level management positions are out there!! You just have to look in the right places. There is so much someone can do and I'm tired of seeing so much wasted potential. One man can change the world. That's the end of my rant sorry if this comes off as narcissistic and prolific(and looong), I'm ready to do big things and I am proud of what I've done. I'm also 6'3" white male with a deep voice so I'm sure that helps me out a bit. But regardless, nothing is impossible, just do it. If you want something changed, be the one to do it, create those high paying jobs for other people so they can live a happy life, that's my dream.
Love you guys, hopefully I've inspired a few of you.

What did you do to build your credit? I'm 21 and just took out a small loan (6k) to pay off a car I bought, and will be building credit for the first time with that. Whats your advice?
#209 to #67 - anon (11/01/2015) [-]
That's not how you build credit, taking out a loan for 6k is very, very stupid, because now you owe that back PLUS interest. You build credit by getting a credit card, ANY credit card you qualify for, and then don't get yourself strung out, buy a loaf of bread once a month. Pay it off every month. lo and behold, your building the same amount of credit as a guy who spends 4,000 a month and pays it off.

Not everyone can do that, though.

I worked as a consultant for at+t promoting the u-verse campaign, and they would set me up with my own building and people to run.

My boss did the same thing and was earning 500,000 usd a year and he was only 26. Problem is, you have to be an amazing salesman and show you can be a good salesman continually.
It was commission based (100% of your sale), but some people cannot sell stuff to people, ESPECIALLY door to door like I had to do.
At least people are looking to buy something when they come to you, but we had to go to people's homes and get them to buy **** they already had with someone else, for sometimes cheaper.
Sales jobs are not for everyone. I worked there for 2 months and could not sell a God damn thing. I tried my ass off, but lying one of the biggest things I hate and stay away from in life and putting on a facade to sell some ******** cable that tricks people into a contract is definitely a lie .

Some people just cannot do sales. I sure as **** couldn't.

I seriously don't care about this **** . I don't know what generation is complain to who. I'm 20 and 3/4 of the way through an engineering degree at a public university in the states. Everybody I know is swimming in internship money and will make 3 times their loan debt in their first year of employment. When I see these posts, all I can imagine is angry "communications" majors.

And whose house costs $400k+? My family home is worth 120k at best, and I'm renting a room in a house near my school with the money I was able to make over the summer.

The money is out there, just don't expect it to show up at your door wrapped in a bow...

This hit close to home. I've been going through quite a bit and trying to pay off my car and first semester of college (dropped out first semester, not for me. Maybe a trade school. Just working right now.)

I cannot stress how much crap I've sifted through and how many bad decisions I've made that have completely changed who I was.

This post is so ******* accurate to me that it hurts. I'm not sure how good the facts are, but if they're good, this guy explained it well.

Rant over.

The mental health argument is a bit off... I heard that the reason to close mental health institutions, hospitals, and asylums was because often times the people there that had mental disabilities were treated terribly, like they weren't human. Studies showed that people with mental disabilities, with some assistance, could live semi-functional lives, so all those institutions died off because the government and such wanted these people to be free, they would just have assistance to check up on them and see how they're doing so that they can live their lives like the rest of us, functional. It's worked apparently.
#161 - Biue (11/01/2015) [-]
Everyone I've met that complains about this spends their money like idiots. I NEED lotto tickets. I NEED 10gb of data on my cell phone. I NEED a brand new car instead of a used one. I NEED HBO, and a full package of channels on my tv service. I NEED to buy my friends and family big presents. blah blah blah.

I get it though, the cost of goods and services has increased more than wages have. I'm just tired of complaints about it when the person complaining hasn't even attempted to get themselves out of it.

I save up my money as best I can. However, it's difficult when tuition is $40k a year at my medical school, and they refused to cover an entire semester when they saw I had saved up $6k (which I was going to use for a car / rent). I'm now at $40 in my bank account, and have to work an entire year of full-time unpaid internships WITH research and essays due weekly. I can barely fit in hours for part time, for food, and had to move in back home because there is literally nothing to my name, and no way to afford being independent. I have no idea what I'll do when I get done with school, either.
#192 to #177 - Biue (11/01/2015) [-]
Medical school is a big investment. Stay positive with that though because there are many jobs within that field. If you can make it through even just scraping by, you'll be rewarded for that.

It's going to be even BETTER in a Socialist America.

In the last Democratic Debate, Bernie Sanders said he would raise taxes on the middle class (The people who go through college and get jobs)!

BUT DON'T WORRY!!

The people who sit at home all day and get high will get FREE **** for just for sitting around!

Disagreeing with a Bernie supporter makes you a racist and bigot, btw So lube up and bend over because it is "Going to be awesome!"

"B-but college will be free!!!"

Lol. Look at EU countries that have free college.

You know what happens?
- You have to pay an (Large) additional tax for the first 10 years of working in your feild
-Everybody and their mothers will be going to college and then saturating the job market making it nearly impossible to get a job
-Even more people will go just because they don't want to work and it is pretty much free room and board until they get kicked out for failing

It's basically Affirmative Action but now white people can get in on the "Free Stuff" too

User avatar #227 to #224 - thatguyontheright ONLINE (11/01/2015) [-]
Clinton signed nafta which destroyed American industry. Bush gave tax breaks making it easier to ship jobs overseas. Both parties are guilty

Before 2000, it was pretty easy to get a good job that did not require a college degree...basically you worked in a factory. Now all the factory jobs are minimum wage (except for the ones that can kill you and those you need years of experience to get into). GM isn't America's largest employer anymore. Now it's McDonalds and Wal-Mart.

You aren't picking up what I'm putting down

Multiple front running Republican candidates have laid out extensive plans dealing with reclaiming and making well paying jobs, here in the US.

Give me some of their plans.

Bernie's idea is to reform NAFTA and other existing trade agreements to work for America, and block 100% of TPP. Job regrowth will be slow of course.
User avatar #232 to #230 - iminschool (11/01/2015) [-]
First of all. Are you serious? Every president since Clinton has "promised" to reform the NAFTA policy and other existing trade agreements. The "Muh Jobs" is just a catch phrase that everyone of them have come up with.

Just look up Ben Carson and DTrump's plan on job recovery man. Sorry tho, I was under the impression that you follow both parties instead of just left pandering MSM. I don't blame you tho bro. Comedy Central and Late Night shows pretty much shill for Bernie and Hillary. The only thing you will hear about Ben Carson is that he is low energy and retarded and the only thing you will hear about Trump is that he is a racist and retarded. gg tbqh fam.

Just for starters. You know how Trump kept bringing up how Chevy was building their production plant in Mexico? They actually decided "After further analysis" that is would be better to build the plant in the States.

All it ******* takes is to put some PR pressure on these ******* companies and they will think "Oh **** . Now that I think about it, people boycotting our product because we are destroying the job market kind of out weighs out sourcing jobs because it would be cheaper labor."

******* Dems and past presidents have a naque for taking "donations" from these massive companies to keep their mouths shut.

The thing about Carson and Trump is that they are not politicians and are basically being shunned for trying to ****** the money grubbing network of both sides of politics.

It's a beautiful thing when you stop watching leftist propoganda and look outside the box.. Just because every station on TV (Including Faux) says that Carson and Trump are ******* retarded doesn't mean that it is true.
User avatar #234 to #232 - thatguyontheright ONLINE (11/01/2015) [-]
So their plan is to just put pressure on companies? Just pressure? WoooooooooW.

Also I think Carson is a retard because he is a Christian Dominionist. And Trump is the clown candidate who'll drop out of the election once people stop paying attention to him. Remember Howard Dean?
#236 to #234 - iminschool (11/01/2015) [-]
Yeah

Yeah buddy. Public Pressure that the public will demand they bring production back to the states ALONG WITH putting a 30-50% tariff taxation on imported products from said companies.

If they want to keep their **** over seas and pay the huge tariff tax, you know what happens? That ******* generic and knockoff brand will turn into a name brand and ******* BOOM the economy.

It's very sad how you just dismissed all of the facts I just laid out and got emotional. Typical leftist.

IT SEEMS YOU ARE HAVING A BATTLE OF THE FEELS vs the REALS

I also find it disturbingly hilarious that you dismissed the fact that every politician takes handouts en masse from massive corporations by pandering to their policy change requests.

Oh, and also; If Ben Carson was a Muslim and someone ******* said they think he was retarded because he is a ******* Allah loving goat ****** , you would ******* **** yourself while finding the fastest route to a computer where you would tell every human connection on social media what you just heard.

Quit being an emotional PC faggot or **** off fam
#252 to #236 - anon (11/01/2015) [-]
I don't care for Muslims either. But if any group thinks their religion is meant to dominate anything, they can get ****** for all I care. The Middle East, Israel, etc are examples on why church and state are to remain separate.

I know every single politician is already bought, I mean they have to be to pay the fees to be on the ballot.

On the tariff thing, do you think they'll do it? I doubt they will. Most of their doners are companies or represent people who shipped their jobs overseas. They aren't going to hurt anyone who gave them the money to run.

I'm sure you dad has hit rough times and needed state assistance to survive. **** is tough sometimes and I don't blame him.

However. It is ingrained in liberals to take the easy route and collect everything they can while doing as little as possible to give back. They even go to the extent to having as many kids as they can for more money from the state. It is an actual thing.

Believe it or not, the subculture of getting high and trying to be a rapper all day is much larger than you think in young adults today. You can thank main stream media and HollyJew for that, my friend.

The military is pretty much life on easy street. With no bills and getting paid exponentially more for each education level reached as well as having free or paid education for you, your spouse, your dependents, etc. in AAA rated schools (higher than most private schools on base) as well as free travel opportunities and retirement.

I honestly feel sorry for those who cannot join. But if you can join and you haven't tried, you are truly, truly missing out. Even if you don't make it through boot camp, you more than likely have funded a decent chunk of your education just with veteran benefits, and will more than likely get free medical care for life even if you're dishonorably discharged.

I of course speak of the U.S. Military and their benefits. I'm obligated to point out that all other militaries are full of furfags and gays. Again, this is signed into my current contract, so no offense. Except for you Russia. Your Spetznaz is grossly ineffective and complete ***** . You're all wankers.

Yeah , we only brought here feminism who's a ticking bomb and getting money for not having to work , being fat , being lazy , we made whoring popular and most people who wanna "change things " from our generation are gonna make some of the most retarded choices that will be written in history as the " let's not do that again " of humanity. Our generation is just as bad , the only problem being that we don't have the power to change things YET. God forbid a feminist president
#30 to #21 - hongkonglongdong (10/31/2015) [-]
Nope. Feminism's had that problem since before its inception, getting money for not having to work is older than a century, being fat is hardly a twenty-first century thing (the eighties is really when the scare kicked off), laziness has remained constant throughout all of history, whoring has always been and always will be popular (and should be, thank you very much), but yes I agree that we're going to make insanely retarded choices. As you say, the key thing is this; we won't make exceptionally retarded choices. We're all retards, we've always been retards, and we always will be.

A feminist president would just be one riding on the coattails of yet another political craze. Just like the war on drugs, or terror, or Catholicism or white slavery or slavery in general or Protestantism or Orthodoxy or Shiite Islam or those darn Saracens in Jerusalem or those barbaric Romans or those degenerate Tang Chinese or those Mongoloid...Mongols or those rebellious Dutchmen or those uncivilised Scotts or those other uncivilised Scotts...

User avatar #31 - Abortedwafflez (10/31/2015) [-]
While some of that is true, our generation is also probably one of the more lazier ones. People have less connections and less overall close friends. People like me don't do much with their life and instead indulge on entertainment. I think people don't work as hard as they previously did. But then again, it is harder to do a lot considering EVERYTHING is 10x more formal and competitive.

Probably less to do with being lazy, and more to do with there being fewer non-social options when parents' generation grew up.
User avatar #79 to #31 - kalagas (10/31/2015) [-]
Well, when they were kids, they just had books and then the telly to distract them, otherwise everyone was outside playing, learning new things, making friends, enemies, etc. and growing. These days, I meet parents giving their children tablets and phones to keep them complacent, stuck to some device because they're oh so tired, and kids are just oh so difficult to deal with. It's far too dangerous for children to play outside! A pedo will kidnap them! I think technology has both improved and screwed up our lives and the way we raise our children.
