the canonical one is that he was from a family of butlers that had served the waynes for a long time. and he himself went to star as an actor in broadway before his parents died of either old age or killed by the court of owls (cant recall) and then he came back to serve as the butler for waynes.

the part about him being former green beret or sas (it changes) is also fairly common

He was SAS, then he left and became a stage actor before his father, the original butler to thee Wayne family, was murdered by the court, Alfred deciding to step in as the new butler.

This is the New 52 Canon, and I think is still used through rebirth.

It's to do with the writers. Sometimes Joker wants to toy with batman, other times he's happy to just shoot him so he can have his fun elsewhere.

In the story he freaked out over Luthor, Lex was dying of cancer and wanted one last shot at killing the entire Justice league. Joker steps in uninvited, but makes a quick point without him, Batman would find the and take them down instantly, to which Batman almost does until Joker gets the drop on him. Having Batman tied up, Joker says to Lex if he allows Batman to live now he'd find a way to escape and thwart their plans, so it was best to just shoot him. Lex ignores this saying he'd do things his own way, Joker retorting 'And people call ME crazy.'

That character part of the Joker hadn't been that established in that series. All that the kids watching would know is that the Joker is a Batman bad guy that wants to kill him because that's what bad guys do.

God do you think Kevin Conroy only agreed to voice Batman AGAIN even when he keeps saying "This is my last portrayal" when DC told him "You would know this character better then anyone why don't you try to make this feel less like work and just go into a character deconstruction about yourself."

Action had an episode where Batman and Blue Beetle went back in time to when Batman first started heroing and instead of the Batman you got in say "Year 1" which revolved around Batman experimenting with all sorts of absurd **** like recklessly jumping onto trains driving at 200 MPH you had a version of Batman who didn't have the Batman mobile or even an expensive car

He was camping in a ******* compact with I **** you not PISS BOTTLES AND FAST FOOD and when he finally discovered his lead he tried to scale a ******* abandoned warehouse with a rope and grapple and when he tried to target his projectile HE MISSED

Bruce then turns to Beetle and says "I literally invented the Grapple Gun because I never wanted to actually put real effort into wear I aimed it"
