I will almost always play as a female character if the option is presented.
Although my first and most leveled Skyrim character is male.

I liked to play as a girl in crystal because she has a unique sprite and "Crystal" would make sense as a name. Sometimes when replaying I might pick the opposite gender but most of the time I pick guy..

My brother had good reasoning of playing a female character on a MMO "If I am going to stare at an ass for the whole game I might as well enjoy the view."

I'm a girl who often plays as a guy character in video games. In Pokemon I play as the opposite gender. But it kind of depends on what sort of game it is.

For games with no character customization, I play as a guy.
(Cause most girls in those sorts of games are dumb looking)

For games with bad character customization, I play as a guy.
(Cause if the girl I created looks ugly or stupid, I don't wanna play... Designing a male character is much easier, cause even if there's only like two options for hair, they're probably decent options)

For games with good character customization, I play as a girl.
(Cause if there's good hair and clothing for girls, I'll play as a girl)
User avatar #22 to #17 - Namezone ONLINE (02/24/2014) [-]
i'm the opposite. I usually play as a girl but am a guy. If it's something like fallout it's 60% because there are gender related perks that work better as female. (and on Skyrim i've got a...well we'll just call it a special mod that makes females the wiser choice. it's something much darker than simple nudity.) The other 40% is because i prefer to play third person, femass is much better than manass on a long binge. I only go male whenever there's a really nice set of armor i like, since they're usually much better looking for men.
User avatar #24 to #22 - Temari (02/24/2014) [-]
Yeah, I play as a woman as long as I can make her decently attractive. Like, in Saints Row 2, 3, and 4, you can make a pretty fine female character. So I always play as a female in Saints Row. Same for Skyrim.
In Fallout (3 and New Vegas), I made a male character because it just seemed more logical, I don't know why. I suppose it's because I was mainly focused on making a big brute of a character who was really strong and good at fighting, especially with guns. But then I made a female character who was more of a cunning thief, sneaky and good with speaking.
So it kind of depends who my character is and what perks they have.
User avatar #25 to #24 - Namezone ONLINE (02/24/2014) [-]
i think Bethesda in particular has been great about that kind of thing. Oh and i'll also be a male when i start with the roleplaying phase of gameplay, after i've gotten mainly bored with the game...mainly because i don't know how to roleplay with women.

I always go for the less popular choice. Not just with gender, but with most things. Unlike some people, I don't pick females using the lame "female ass" excuse. I pick females because they tend to be more unique than your usual cliché "hurr durr barbarian muscleman with axe." It's much more interesting seeing a twintailed loli with a huge axe than generic muscleman #1324315.

Always, due to habits from a certain game called phantasy star online.
In it the classes are gender based to some extent, but since i preferred the specialisation of the none male characters as they had better attack animations and such.
And from that habit was born a habit to play the other gender in everything(More correctly all games).

User avatar #7 to #6 - iwasonaboat (02/23/2014) [-]
Well for MMO's that's a different story.

I do the opposite though, but not as a solid rule. I make melee characters female (eg. Human Pally, Dranei Shaman) but my magicals (mage/warlock etc) male. Rogues and hunters get 50/50.

Although, my fave character of all time was the Priest I had on Terra. The great customization allowed me to make her look older (30-40 as opposed to the 20's usually seen in MMO's) and give her a sneer, making her look like a HUGE BITCH.

It tickled my fancy that this woman would heal you with the sourest expression I could create. Your life was meaningless, and she knew it, and she HAD to prolong that useless life. But damn she really wanted to be a warlock or something.

Post stories of interesting MMO characters dammit. Lets all get our brag on.

In Pokemon I always played as my own gender (male).
In other RPG games, say Skyrim and Dark Souls, female
Yet in something like Mass Effect, male.

I don't even know what really makes me decide. I guess it's usually more of a "which gender seems to fit this role better in context, in Pokemon it was just to make it personalized, and if it doesn't matter, why not have a sweet, sweet ass?"
User avatar #92 to #1 - savyx (02/24/2014) [-]

People who think Pokemon is hard need to go back to their Dark Souls, Super Meat Bays, Ninja Gaidens and other kiddie peasant games like those. If you can't handle the sheer testosterone that is Pikachu and the terror that is ***************** , you'll cry yourself to sleep counting the times you'll be royally reduced to nothing in the hand of Brock's fully grown Onix and Misty's cold-ass honkey Staryu. And that's not even speaking of the infamous sequels, in X and Y you need to get 3!!! ******* hearts in Pokemon Skull-Shatering Ami for your Pokemon to love you. Imagine having to pet the literal solar nuclear bomb called Mag-the-Hell-Bringer-Cargo just for it to dismiss you as its next target. And the Dragons, the giant lion-dogs roaming about and even worse the ******* fairies. Don't you dare underestimate those, they'll kill you and everyone you know just because they wanted to have some fun. Ever heard of Play Rough?! If someone ever dares to play that game without the Exp.Share may God have mercy on his/her soul.

1. Choose your gender
2. Put your name
3. Put a friend's name, or use one of the methods in number 5
4. Pick the coolest one with best evolution and moves
5. Name all of your Pokemon after gods or other beings from mythology, philosophers, scholars, poets, pets, or cool science words. Gods should correspond with your Pokemon's type. (The more obscure the name, the cooler it sounds)

Example: My character is a male named Ryder; I'm playing Black so I didn't have to name my friends, otherwise I would name him Horace, or Aesop, or some other cool as name; I name fire types after fire gods and demons, my Tepig was named Antares, I name psychic types after things that have to do with the mind, like my Munna named Moneta after the godess of memory, and my Pansage was named Humbaba because he is a grass type, and my Lillipup is normal so I went with something scientific and named him Gamma after radiation, my Venipede is a bug type and since I couldn't think of anything that specifically corresponds with bugs like a bug god or anything, I went with gods of death for bug types and named it Cichol.

You get a pretty badass team going this way.

1. Pick own gender.
2. Name after the version Red in FireRed, Ruby in Ruby, Black in Black, Yakov in Y .
3. Name after corresponding version if possible.
4. Fire all the way. Only ever picked the other types when Sapphire was all I had and would replay it repeatedly. Boy, did that bite me in the ass on my FireRed run.
5. Names were either references Ninetales named Kyuubimon, Magikarp named Nemo, Blaziken named Scootaloo, Rhyhorn named Rhinox or bastardized from the species name Absol named Absalom, Sandshrew named Andrew, Abra named Abraham, Charizard named Charles . Only things I name after gods are legendaries birds are named after Norse gods, beasts are named after Greek gods, golems are named after Titans , with a few exceptions Lugia named Lucifer and Yveltal named Edgebird, event legendaries . For some reason, I name Steel types after metals, so there we go.
