When I was 17, for christmas my grandma gave me some bathroom carpet and towel set.
How do you genuinely react to that?

That was always a bit of a difficult part of birthdays as a kid. Even when I REALLY liked what I got, I had trouble expressing it in a way that conveyed my thanks. I know this is really "First world problem" sounding, but it truly bothered me as a child that I was unable to show how much I appreciated the thought my family put into making these celebrations special. I simply was never (and still am not) very good at expressing myself.

Wow I honestly felt I was just a total dick for doing this. Like I was really grateful, but I knew that I looked like I didn't give a **** when my parents got me my first car or whatever. Like I loved that thing and all but I just was never good at expressing thanks.

I feel exactly the same way. My sister has tourettes and everytime she gets a present she squeaks loudly and gets all excited. Meanwhile I'm happy to have received the gift, but how does one compete with the mentally unstable?

It kinda is a confession though. OP is confessing that he/she don't like to open presents in front of others

My mom gets really upset if i'm not super excited about something. I'm happy about it, but i can't just leak enthusiasm. I'm still happy though..

My mom used to stand in the background making exactly this face to ensure that I didn't start to show any signs of discontent.

Excited, for we will go beyond the limits of omniscience itself, beyond the our own realm of existence, into the unknown, were possibly only oblivion awaits.
