Everybody seems to be wondering how you can join a fraternity in high school, and thus are calling ******** . It wasn't the fraternity itself; it was a program aimed at trying to get young students motivated in graduating high school and going to college, while also benefiting by seeking new members when these students graduate.

You need to login to view this link

Here's the program information. It's not much, but it exists. (Also the contact address is an address that's about <20 minutes from my high school, Old Mill Senior High, if that makes it more credible.)

You could have made history.
User avatar #3 to #1 - bigboyblue (01/30/2014) [-]
I've thought about this many times. It's possible that white members already existed within the fraternity, but no white people were present at that meeting. On the other hand, if I continued attending meetings and tried becoming a member of the fraternity, there's a likely chance of constant rejection (unless whites were already allowed in).

Regardless, I thought it'd be too awkward to pursue it any further. I'm incredibly beta.
User avatar #5 to #3 - mrdrpage (01/30/2014) [-]
And then you could have played the race card.
User avatar #6 to #5 - bigboyblue (01/30/2014) [-]
Certainly could have. The coordinators there seemed accepting of me, so I wonder what really would've happened down the line, but I still didn't want to bother with it. Fraternities aren't my thing anyway.

you would have been fine, just because it started out as the first african american fraternity doesn't mean other nationalities can't join... it was make because african americans couldn't white fraturnities at the time.

Definitely. That wouldn't be difficult either. I went to a middle school in Baltimore and was literally one of two white students there.

mfw all the teachers loved me and I got a trophy for excellence in science, when all I did was explain how light reflects and refracts, since my class couldn't comprehend it.

Every college I've ever known has had some club for every group. African Americans, Latinos, Christians, Jews, etc. but never whites. My current university has a criminal justice club just for Latinos. It's really ******* bizarre, but whatever.

Also, up in Towson university, they got a White Student Union last year. Everyone was excited that finally whites can have clubs like all other races do. Club president began calling himself "Commander", vowed to keep the peace on campus, and did so by accusing/apprehending "suspicious" black students.

Here's what I don't get about fraternities

>All black frats
>All gay frats

and then they just call the all white fraternites the 'rich' ones.
User avatar #57 to #51 - passi (01/31/2014) [-]
Coming from someone in a fraternity, I actually wholly dislike the idea of "only black" or "only gay" (I only know of one literal purely homosexual fraternity "Delta Lamda Phi").

Seeing as the mission for fraternities and sororites typically tends to be something along the lines of bettering yourself and your community while sharing in the bonds of brotherhood, excluding people who don't fit your "recruitment criteria" is plain wrong in my eyes.

My organization itself focuses on "recruiting men of character" and only targeting men that fit that standard, but that is based on getting men who are dignified and stand outs in the community, but race and sexual orientation? Who cares, there's so much more to base a person on.
User avatar #60 to #57 - disniggahere (01/31/2014) [-]
Well, isn't "recruiting men of character" excluding men without character, and thus excluding people who don't fit your "recruitment criteria"?

This is also coming from another member of a Fraternity
User avatar #75 to #60 - passi (01/31/2014) [-]
if you're in another fraternity you should know what kinds of consequences would come about recruiting someone who wouldn't necessarily fit the persona of a man of character.

That stipulation is supposed to guide the whole process of getting men who's GPA's, community service, morale, and etc are all in line with not only the principles and values of the fraternity but also in line with the standards of the University, and that can be said for any fraternity on any campus in the nation. I've never heard of any organization not setting a standard for grades, service or anything of the like.

Discrimination based off ethnicity or anything else is just stupid in my opinion. I've even met AEPi guys (its a jewish fraternity if you didn't know) who were against excluding non-jews if they actually wanted to be a part of it.

I'm a Phi Tau, what about you?
User avatar #76 to #75 - disniggahere (01/31/2014) [-]
just giving you a hard time, I know what you meant. Of course you want to recruit the leaders or potential leaders to a Fraternity, meaning that there are standards to be met. The only Fraternities that I have seen that exclude others are the one religious based ones. This is why they're not recognized by my campus.

Im in Phi Delta Theta. some of our more famous members are Neil Armstrong, Burt Reynolds, Roger Ebert, and Chris Hansen. Love being able to call these guys Brothers
User avatar #77 to #76 - passi (01/31/2014) [-]
I like you. You get what recruitment actually means. Thumbed.

Anyway, yeah I know some Phi Delts, but at a different school I used to spend a lot of time at that was nearby.
User avatar #80 to #77 - disniggahere (01/31/2014) [-]
Haha thanks, I just went Alumnus this last fall (graduated), so I still got it fresh in my memory.

Always good to meet a fellow Greek, there is no Phi Tau chapter at my campus (Phi Kappa Tau?), but Greek life here is not big to begin with. Hopefully down the road, the school will be more accepting of Greeks and get your Fraternity here.

I hope those boys treat you well and are living up to the Letters

User avatar #67 to #63 - nigeltheoutlaw (01/31/2014) [-]
That's odd. I've met quite a few skanky black girls, but it was never more than the number of skanky girls from other flavors. I usually only went after the proud, dignified black women though, so maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but I'm sure you could find a bunch of decent girls there.
User avatar #69 to #67 - psykobear (01/31/2014) [-]
Yeah, they're there. But usually the loudness (and god do I mean that) of the former is off putting. Plus, I got other things on my mind. you are right, though. the decent ones are there and they are fine.

Historically blacks and the Irish were very close in America, they were both discriminated against, and usually were made to live together in the slums, which led to many Irish-AfroAmericans with surnames such as "O'Neal, Murphy, Morrison, and Mcall"

It wasn't the actual fraternity itself, but rather a program where they take high school students and hold regular meetings. It happened about 6 years ago (and I only attended that first meeting), so I don't remember what exactly the purpose was, but I assume it was to get future graduates interested in Alpha Phi Alpha so they would try joining when it was time.
