This classic Spanish dessert of a rolled sponge cake filled with a creamy lemon custard is called brazo de gitano or "gypsy's arm." Nobody seems to know how the cake got this name, though one explanation is that the cake roll is thick like a muscular gypsy's arm. The scrumptious cream filling is often flavored with sherry, rum, caramel or coffee.
Before you begin, I need to give you guys some quick background to Spanish culture. Though the major cultural export of Spain is the gypsy culture it does not mean there are no racial tensions between gypsies and payos (what they call us, the non-gypsies). The gypsy culture that is shown on television is primarily from the south, where most gypsies settled down and opened respectable businesses. Those in the north are primarily nomadic tribes, which has given them a very bad reputation. A famous desert from our area, which is very delicious, is called brazo de Gitano (gypsy arm) because it looks like a forearm. This comes from the days that the punishment for stealing was cutting off someone's hand. If you want to scare a child, you tell them you are going to sell them to the gypsies, or that the gypsies will come still him/her.

Never really understood how he learned this in District 12 though, in a district where half (or as Katniss seems to describe it, most of) the residents are too poor to eat, I don't think they care about what their pastries look like.

I know the merchant area of D12 is a little better but even Peeta's family has to live of the burnt pieces/week old leftovers from the store.
User avatar #45 to #41 - WtfStrawberries (01/23/2014) [-]
there are still the people with enough money to pay for it, i..e. the mayor.

******* Katniss at the end of that book... How she treated Peeta after all they had been through made me want to die...
User avatar #52 to #21 - passi (01/23/2014) [-]
see I both loved and hated it. Imperfect endings make stories more real to me, and even though it pretty much stings, that was the reality of her situation. I doubt at that point anyone could have made Katniss whole again, too much of a haunted past, but she worked with what she could.

User avatar #57 to #31 - wunniebee (01/23/2014) [-]
No Gale is an asshat. He does nothing but sook over the fact that Katniss has to be friendly to Peeta ignoring that fact that shes doing it to stay alive and in the third book he's just a flat out cunt SPOILER and killed children (including prim)

I always thought he designed the weapons and the rebel leader was in charge of their use. I thought he wasn't directly involved with her death, but I could have read it wrong.
Thats a good point though, he had a right to be a bit pissed but he over reacted a bit.
User avatar #59 to #58 - wunniebee (01/23/2014) [-]
He knew what they were being targeted for, he didn't directly do it but he sure did help. That's why Peeta is so much better.

He's painting his whole body in camouflage to blend in with the forest and I don't mean the face paint soldiers use.
This picture shows the end result. He's on his back on the ground, next to a rock which has the perfect shape for a head to blend in with..

It's poor areas in destrict 12 as well as rich. But the "rich" ones from our perspective are more like middle class. Katniss lives in the poor area and Petaa lives in the "Middle class" to them, so he is poorer then our avrange. And be aware, he makes the bread and cakes to sell them, not to eat. They get left overs so a squirrel for dinner would be nice to have.
