Never. ******* NEVER
User avatar #173 to #9 - elcreepo (08/05/2015) [-]
This is how one of my older friends ended up burning his dorm's kitchen.

NEVER CHEAP OUT ON ELECTRONICS, ESPECIALLY MICROWAVES AND TOASTERS.

YOU WILL SPARK A TOXIC-SMOKE SPEWING FIRE.
#159 to #9 - cookiedude (08/05/2015) [-]
Depends though. Cords: doesn't matter where they come from or who made them. A $5 cord will work just as good as one that costs more. If you can find a cheaper, one, buy a few of them just in case one doesn't work.

Computer Parts: Always read the customer reviews, and be skeptical of products that have all favorable or 5 star reviews. Find the product on multiple retail sites, and compare them that way. Never buy cheap.

Televisions: It really doesn't matter what you get, unless you want to have something really great. If you haven't heard of the brand though, stay away from it. Bigger isn't always better, but it can't hurt, so long as you have the room and don't break the bank.

Laptops: Only buy laptops from reputable dealers. Walmart is a fallback, or good for really cheap deals. Only buy the big name brands, like HP, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung, Lenovo, and Sony. If you get anything else, don't be surprised that it runs slow or the build quality is poor.

USB/Phone Chargers: If you can, buy generic phone/tablet chargers that are made for your device. Put them in multiple places in your house, and put an extra in your car or purse and another one in your bag for traveling. Put it with a USB cable too, because you'll need them to charge. Honestly, you can never have too many USB cables. Doesn't matter if the cable is 2.0 or 3.0 either, since most devices are 3.0 and a 2.0 cable works with them. If your car has a USB port, just keep a cable plugged in so you can charge while you drive, and maybe even listen to your music or audiobooks.
Always have a charger ready, especially if you are traveling somewhere new. Cables and chargers are cheap.

Appliances: It doesn't matter what you buy for a coffee maker, toaster, etc. They're inexpensive, and regardless of what it is, it will last just as long as the name brand. Major appliances, though, always spend the extra money, and get the warranty. If your brand new Kenmore Washer/Dryer takes a dump, the warranty, and keep renewing that **** for as long as possible, will cover all repairs and labor.

I'm just gonna say this:

A cheap microwave nearly burned down a friend of mine's dorm.

Always form a pool with your roommates and get the more expensive one.
#192 to #174 - cookiedude (08/06/2015) [-]
I would put a microwave in with the major appliances, not with toasters and coffee makers. I didn't really phrase it that well in the post.
User avatar #194 to #192 - elcreepo (08/06/2015) [-]
Ah, well toasters can be dangerous too, but that's usually the fault of the user, not the machine itself. And to argue semantics, coffee makers that are extremely cheap can make some horrid, lukewarm coffee. But really you're right. It doesn't matter the price tag as long as it's not suspiciously cheap five bucks for a coffee maker means a lot of days you'll be at the campus cafe

Most people lump coffee makers, toasters and microwaves together as small appliances, so that's why I assumed.
User avatar #131 to #9 - outsidethebox (08/05/2015) [-]
Sometimes. HDMI cords will either work or not, so go for the cheapest one available of the lastest version and 95% of the time it will work just as well as he most expensive one.
User avatar #139 to #131 - niggastolemyname (08/05/2015) [-]
seriously though people, a 400 dollar HDMI has the EXACT same picture quality as a 4 dollar one. it is just how the cords are built...
#85 to #9 - anon (08/05/2015) [-]
not only that, but do your research on something before buying it
look at beats for example: they're **** , but they're expensive **** and so are apple products

Apple products can be expensive, but they're not **** .
User avatar #156 to #149 - oneko (08/05/2015) [-]
Apple products are extortionately expensive for the mid-range product they tend to be.
They used to base their reputation on quality, but have been overtaken on that front by HTC, LG and Xiaomi (and Samsung, Razer, Gigabyte and MSI for laptops).

Now, they're just followed by those that either want the status symbol Apple seems to present, or those that are diehard apple fans.
User avatar #197 to #156 - lordmoldywart (08/06/2015) [-]
My iPad is the best buy I've ever made. That's of course personal opinion, and there are other great tablets out there, but I'd hardly call it mid-range. As for price, I bought online from a third party retailer and that knocked £200-250 off of Apple's RRP. Just don't buy directly from their website and the prices aren't as extortionate as they would be otherwise.

I don't want to sound like a fan boy, though. I do realise Apple products' flaws, such as non-customisability, and being notoriously used by pretentious hipsters in coffee shops. Oh, and the fact you still have to pay a lump sum (often £100~) when taking out an iPhone on a contract.

User avatar #199 to #197 - oneko (08/06/2015) [-]
As I said, they tend to be mid range products. They appear higher quality and higher spec than they are because of Apple's biggest advantage - the fact that they have such a small range of devices and so little variance between hardware. Hence, iOS can be optimised heavily for the individual device it's running on.
#177 to #156 - admiralaverage (08/05/2015) [-]
razer isn't a great comparison for price:build quality. razer is great buts that doesn't stop it being expensive
User avatar #200 to #177 - oneko (08/06/2015) [-]
Razer's build quality is higher than Apple's. They often go blow for blow with price, and have the same aim with their markets - try to build a fanbase that will always buy their products.

#140 to #9 - hikakiller (08/05/2015) [-]
When buying electronics, do your research, ask your tech friend what he would recommend.

All hdmi's are the same - a $50 cable is the same as a $5 cable, and there's no such thing as a 'high speed' hdmi cable
#158 to #140 - anon (08/05/2015) [-]
Usually true, but not always. If you do a setup with a splitter you often need the better hdmi cables. The signal will time out otherwise due to encryption. Just had to deal with that yesterday. The cheap $5 hdmi didn't work with a splitter, but worked on their own. A nicer hdmi cable ($40) worked in the splitter.
#176 to #158 - anon (08/05/2015) [-]
That doesn't make sense. It's a digital signal. Either the data is sent or it isn't. If you need more range (likely your splitter doesn't draw enough power through the cheaper cables), then you need an active cable, but that has nothing to do with quality of build or price. It's a specific feature.
User avatar #20 to #9 - vortexrain (08/05/2015) [-]
I don't agree with what he said about batteries. I'd rather pay a lot for Duracell, and have them last a good while, than buy cheap ones that need replacement every other week.
#33 to #20 - anon (08/05/2015) [-]
Get energizer lithiums, if you order online you can sometimes get OEM (blank covered) a LOT cheaper but they outlast EVERYTHING.
#26 to #20 - frylad (08/05/2015) [-]
If they're the rechargeable batteries l, generally name brand like Duracell or energizer are a better choice as they last much longer, how ever with disposable ones, the generic brands are just as good if not better.
User avatar #27 to #26 - vortexrain (08/05/2015) [-]
I put some generic batteries in my Xbone controller, just to see how long they'd last, and they burned out in less than a day.
#28 to #27 - frylad (08/05/2015) [-]
I've tried the disposable Duracell ones and they die in around 6-8 hours of gaming, while almost any other lasts 12-24 hours of gaming
User avatar #29 to #28 - vortexrain (08/05/2015) [-]
The one's I changed out the generic with are still in there. I play roughly 6 hours a day, if I don't have anything else to do, and I changed them out over a week ago.
User avatar #42 to #29 - satanisthesavior (08/05/2015) [-]
Get a wired controller. Then you never need to change batteries. The cord is a bit of a pain but I've never had an issue with the cord not reaching far enough.
#45 to #42 - anon (08/05/2015) [-]
Or just buy the 19.99 rechargeable pack. Comes with a cord and everything. It's $20 bucks well spent. Will pay for itself when you consider the batteries you would otherwise go through and it includes a long ass cable you can use for recharging or normal use if the battery pack dies/gets lost.
User avatar #47 to #45 - blandbland (08/05/2015) [-]
The cord only reaches if its a 360 Controller the gamecube ones are so short my friends will not play smash with them also you can use the play and charge kit without the battery just put the AA battery cover on without any batteries inside then plug the charging cable in and there you go wired 360 controller

if you were on some tussin (robotrippin) and it only had dxm. its usual the one blue box you have to ask the pharmacy techs for. as the active ingredient. then overdosing is less likely, but, doing that much robotussin will likely give you stomach ulcers and also intestinal issues (not sure about the later.).

NyQuil and almost every other brand of cough medicine however, have other active ingredients. it depends on the type, but these other chemicals are deadly when consumed in large amounts.some are worse than others, and there are individual differences to be considdered, butt i think tripple Cs are the is one of the worst. they are tablets and can be taken in large amounts easily... overdosing is easy with them...

anywhoo.. if you want to not have stomach ulcers from the robotussin. you can use an extraction method with uses various chemichals in succesion to extract the dxm from your tussin to make agent lemmon. this can be done easily if your patient and watch your youtube vids.

Couple of things from my experiences:

1: Bayer's Aspirin. It usually comes in a small yellow bottle of 50mg pills. Get it and keep it somewhere. This has probably saved my life. I started experiencing a heart attack or something close to it. Probably gallbladder, but the Hospital made me sit in the ER waiting room for 3 hours while I was experiencing it. It ******* sucked. , and Aspirin will help stop heart attacks almost dead in their tracks.

2: You can microwave a hotdog perfectly fine without the need for water. Just cut down the middle of the hotdog, following it's length, making the cut about halfway through the hotdog. While cooking, the hotdog will spread open and use that slice to vent heat and prevent it from exploding. I've done this since I was a kid. Works perfectly, just don't overcook it.

3: Ramen. I learned this while I was living at an academy: Nacho Cheese Doritos go perfectly with almost any ramen. Just throw some chips into it, mash it up, and mix it. It gives it an awesome crunch and it's amazing.
Also, some other tricks for ramen: If you're cooking ramen on the stove, after the ramen is already cooked: Toss in an egg. Start stirring immediately and make sure it gets mixed well. The noodles will be coated with the egg, making it immensely more filling, and giving it a ton of flavor. I also like to add chopped green onions, and either a small amount of soy sauce, or sirachi. It does wonders.

3: Everything isn't as important/detrimental as you think it is. The best thing you can do for yourself is to constantly remain calm and relaxed. The time to encounter a problem will come when it's ready. Worrying about it before-hand and freaking out will never help you.

4: My biggest tip, and the best advice I was ever given: If you don't enjoy your job, then quit. Life is too short to work a job you don't enjoy. Obviously if it's a higher-paying job, then try getting another before you actually quit. But for young adults, you're usually making ****** money anyways. Quit and work somewhere that you'll enjoy, and you'll never regret it.

5: Also, don't stay at a job for over 1-2 years if it's not your career path choice, or dealing with job experience for your planned career. No point in working somewhere for money, when you could be working for money and building your resume.

6: Learn basic problem solving. This sounds silly, but it's incredibly useful and almost nobody has this skill until they're taught it. I've solved many problems on stuff I have no experience on or knowledge of how they work. I fixed my car using this skill. If something goes bad on something, then it may be that object, or it could be anything associated with that object (I.E. Cables, controls, etc). You can find out by using the process of elimination. This is extremely hard/long to explain by typing, so go google how to teach yourself this ability. The best thing I can suggest is to learn how to diagnose basic computer problems. You can apply that same knowledge to many other things.
#142 to #113 - poljento (08/05/2015) [-]
1: Do not use aspirin for a supposed heart attack, unless you have a diagnosed cardiovascular disease. You probably have diagnosed yourself wrong and the aspirin might not be good for the situation and could slow you from getting the help you need. Even if you do have a heart attack, you're going to need an ambulance. Leave this stuff to the professionals. And, it's 500 mg for pain/emergency circulation. Source: I'm a pharmacist

Every family has a moocher.

A good family helps them regardless.
User avatar #96 to #87 - derpoman (08/05/2015) [-]
Absolutely.

Because they've got lots of money and they ain't using it for **** .

Being an adult is about surviving and not being afraid to ask for help where you can get it.
Pride won't feed your belly.
User avatar #180 to #96 - severepwner (08/05/2015) [-]
Probably won't kill you either. Going to bed hungry for one night is one thing, having to live down mooching off people for food for who knows how long is another.
User avatar #181 to #180 - derpoman (08/05/2015) [-]
Well yeah there's a difference between asking for a bit of money, and another to live off of someone for over a decade of your adult life.
User avatar #183 to #181 - severepwner (08/05/2015) [-]
Even asking for small amounts of money sticks on us once. It feels pretty shameful.
#99 to #96 - anon (08/05/2015) [-]
The whole point of having kids is for them to take care of you when you get old.
#98 to #96 - imjared (08/05/2015) [-]
i guess it's all opinion
in my opinion, an adult is able to take care of themselves
User avatar #102 to #98 - derpoman (08/05/2015) [-]
Ohyeah cuz people never get horribly sick.
You don't go through your whole life without any help from anyone, you wouldn't survive, we're social creatures, if we work together we achieve more.
#103 to #102 - imjared (08/05/2015) [-]
plenty of people go through life without asking for money
User avatar #106 to #103 - derpoman (08/05/2015) [-]
But they still get help in one way or another.

Money isn't the only form of help that exists, and you can't take care of yourself purely with money.
#108 to #106 - imjared (08/05/2015) [-]
if you read my first comment
my entire point was about asking your grandparents for money
you kinda warped it
User avatar #109 to #108 - derpoman (08/05/2015) [-]
Fair enough.

The point I was trying to make is an adult ought to be realistic, if you can get a bit of money here and there, especially if you're a young adult, you should take it. Putting yourself up on some sort of pedestal that just because you're an adult you no longer require aid of any kind is an awfully childish way to look at it IMO.
Because as I said, pride won't buy **** , 20$ will.
An adult would take that 20$, use it to make something out of themselves and when they were stable, they'd bring back 40.
#110 to #109 - imjared (08/05/2015) [-]
the reason i specified bonafied adult, is because there's a difference between being an adult by age, and being a genuinely self sustaining person
the people your referring to as adults are just adults by age
also, referring to my views as childish is pretty rude and uncalled for
just because it's your opinion, doesn't mean you have to speak it out
have i purposely said anything to offend you?
no
i would appreciate the same courtesy
it's just a debate after all
User avatar #118 to #110 - derpoman (08/05/2015) [-]
I'm sorry if my opinion is not worded to your liking, offense was not the goal, if it had been I feel insults would've been a lot more effective.

And calling it childish is not inflammatory in nature, it is only offensive because you make it so, I can't predict for this, and if this really is a "debate" then I would expect you to stick to the point instead of making most of your comment about how you feel attacked because I suggested a part of your view on the matter as immature.
Not only is this counter productive but then it forces me to explain myself in this lengthy a fashion instead of proceeding with said "debate".

Anyway, I believe the misconception you have of adults is that they can always predict for what life throws at them and can always prevent it from disrupting the stability of their lives and that just isn't the truth, sometimes stable mature adults get put into situations where they are no longer stable, does that mean they revert to grown children again? Because that seems like awfully bewildering logic to me, adulthood is supposed to suggest your maturity, not your monetary status, at least that was my impression.

I feel most of these are common sense, but then I realized I had to have learned them and they just feel that way now. Nice post OP.

I'm over 40 years old and I've never had less then $200 in my banking account. When I was younger I tried to keep over $500, not that I'm older I try to keep it over $5k. No I've never made a lot of money and I'm not rich. I just work really hard at managing money. Most importantly make the sacrifice of doing without if I have to.

a lot of these advices were dumb and/or easy to figure out by yourself =/

Engineer here, 60W vs 40W thing is ******** . If it fits (same size socket), it's fine.

How do I know this? Two reasons: first, all products for consumers are far overrated just for the dumb ***** that put a ton of crushed stone in a half-ton pickup truck (hint - it won't break but it'll definitely weaken your chassis over time), and secondly I've actually put a 300W bulb in a 60W max socket.

Congrats Tumblr. You actually thinking. Can you teach me to do that too? How do I get off this site?
