In a city not far from me, a car was stolen. The owner, 'course, called the cops and the car was actually located in another city a few hours away. The owner goes with a police patrol to check if it's his and bring it home. It is his, he unlocks it, and under police protection brings it home, the car being seemingly untouched.
3 days later, the car was broken in to. The owner found it busted open, all the seat covers ripped up. Inside was a note and a envelope with cash. The note said:
"Thanks for the drug. Here's some money to fix it up."
Drug traffickers filled the seats with drugs, had it transported by the unsuspecting bastard and under police protection nonetheless.

usually when cars are stolen, it is for parts, from what i have heard recovering them is sometimes easy, since the thieves leave them for a while in case the car has some sort of tracking

Risky part is getting it in the country and then selling it. Also, they burned their bridge when they told the owner what had happened by leaving a note. Now the police will sniff any car in similar condition they find that was stolen.
