What is a fandom. the state or condition of being a fan of someone or something.
"
the fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. regarded collectively as a community or subculture.
Fandom implies something specific, like a person, team, fictional series, etc. Gaming is far too general to be called a "fandom" - there can be fandoms of games and series of games but gaming's not a fandom. Fandoms of genres like science fiction and media like anime are a stretch - if those interests weren't niche it wouldn't really be a fandom either. Reading's not a fandom, and neither is football.
That is true but as a whole I doubt it matters. I mean look at DC and marvel fandoms Given they are incredibly broad I don't think it is out the question to say games could be put in a generic fandom.
They're not actually that broad - comic books are a very niche interest which apart from the aforementioned Marvel and DC movies don't actually touch mainstream very often. Like other medium such as anime they get away with it by being niche. Gaming got pretty mainstream in the last decade or so - it can't really be called a fandom anymore.
