Capoeira, one of the hardest, surely one of the coolest and most impressive, but also one of the most useless marterial arts in existance. (also the movie is never back down, or for the Germans and some of the other european countrys: Fighters... I really don`t know why they changed it when it's still in english...)

I always approached it as a military drill. That's how capoeristas approached it too. It increases your physical capabilities a lot. Also Capoeira Angola is one of the most strategic fighting styles.

mostly becuase of all the unnesesary movements.

capoeira was originally used by slaves who disguised it as a dance to not agitate the slavers.

in nowadays world capoeira is still used in mma and such(since the kicks in capoeira are actually quite the ******* good and usefull) but most of the unnesesary movement has been taken off.
User avatar #5 to #3 - icedmochafrappe (05/03/2014) [-]
Actually you're wrong on that. That guy wasn't exactly focused on fighting and was just about showing off, but if you watch someone who's an expert and really is about kicking your ass its actually a very expert way of dodging attacks and making your moves unpredictable to your oppents.

Well I many different marterial arts, including an extremely stressfull four month of capoeira and let me tell you something: Whenever I acted outside of capoeira (I did five years of Kung-Fu and two years of kickboxing before) I'd always hit my teacher (who had quite a few titles and did really impressive things) ... which was one of the reasons I was nearly kicked out (I later signed out, because my teacher wouldn't allow me to act outside of capoeira and because... damn that ****** exhausting) So: Capoeira is actually usefull and impressive against other people who do capoeira and against anyone with no to minor marterial arts knowledge, but in a competition it can't win against most of the other marterial arts (like shown in the movie) because you have a hell of a lot openings and can't concentrate on your enemy 100% of the time. Also it gives you almost no place for improvisation or to modify it for your needs when you have to fight someone who doesn't do your stuff (this is a common problem: You do marterial art XY and you are a master in XY, but you can't win against someone who is mediocre in marterial art AB, not because it is superior, but because you never learned how to defend agaist certaine movement patterns. You can modify many marterial arts to match your needs to also win against for example groups of enemys. This is... I wouldn't say impossible, but pretty much the hardest with capo.)

Tadashi Sawamura in red shorts if anyone wanted to know . And the technique is flying knee slap (extremely impressive)
#36 to #33 - feratrox (05/04/2014) [-]
No, I'm pretty sure the technique is named "The Knee of Justice".
Seriously though, is he Japanese? I thought this was Muay Thai or something
User avatar #37 to #36 - aytoktonik (05/04/2014) [-]
Yes it is muay thai sawamura was one of the first to learn muay thai in japan after that he removed the really dangerous elements ( knees elbows stomp kicks strike to the joints etc) from muay thai and the dangerous elements( bare knuckles strikes to the neck and joints) from karate and created kickboxing as a sport alternative .

How the hell did he deserve it? Dude was just busting some awesome moves and then that asshole just punched him for no god damn reason. Unless I'm missing something really obvious, the guy who punched him is a total dick.
User avatar #14 to #13 - vatra (05/04/2014) [-]
They were supposed to be fighting. The dude was doing show offy flips and **** to try and intimidate the other dude, the other dude wasn't impressed.
#15 to #14 - xcoreyx (05/04/2014) [-]
Well there were zero context clues that this was a fight and not a dance-off, but okay
User avatar #16 to #15 - vatra (05/04/2014) [-]
Look at their clothes, they are wearing opposite color shorts, no shirts, and MMA gloves. Not to mention the other guy is pacing like a fighter. The third guy is clearly reffing.
#17 to #16 - xcoreyx (05/04/2014) [-]
Well I guess it just depends on your prior knowledge. Every time I've seen an open circle in a crowd of people with a guy dancing in the middle, it's at a rave or a dance or something.
User avatar #19 to #17 - vatra (05/04/2014) [-]
Apparently it is from a movie. Never Back Down. They were fighting, the guy "dancing" is actually using a form or martial arts that focuses on distracting your opponent.
User avatar #18 to #17 - vatra (05/04/2014) [-]
Fair enough, I've seen both, more so the fighting, but just everything about it seems like a show boater getting pwned.

where is that gif from
User avatar #26 to #25 - sunnyday (05/04/2014) [-]
It's from the music video of Do The Evolution by the band "Pearl Jam".

You'll likely find the gif near the end.

It's at about 2:53, actually.

Theres two types of Capoeira: Fighting and preformance. He was not a Capoeira fighter. He was a preformer. Thats like taking a stunt man and putting him in a MMA ring and wonder why he dosnt win. I 've seen a lot of people use this clip from Never Back Down to **** talk capoeira and its kind of ******** . The guy in this clip is not a fighter back a acrobat.
#32 - rickysan (05/04/2014) [-]
Never back down? anybody seen it? Cause this is is a clip from the move
User avatar #22 - latinotornado (05/04/2014) [-]
Capoeira reminds me of Zui Quan. Both I consider to be art. Really bringing out the ART part of Martial Art. But as beautiful as they are, they're not very useful. Now hold the **** up, before all you fanboys of Capoeira and drunk boxing start bitching, i'm not calling those styles useless. They can in fact be useful and have the ability to beat an opponent. But for the most part, they are not nearly as useful as other martial art styles.
#28 to #22 - masculino (05/04/2014) [-]
I'm not taking any side in which Martial Art is best, but as I heard someone say once; It's not about what style you fight, it's how well you execute your's.

Something like that.
User avatar #35 to #22 - angelious ONLINE (05/04/2014) [-]
as i said to the top comment.while you are right capoeira has a lot of unnesesary movement.its not really that much of an obsolete fighting style.the kicks they use are darn powerfull and usefull if you know how to use them and the takedowns are also simplistic but effective.

Reminds me of what happens when a scout tries to jump dodge a direct hit.
