Though it should not be an issue, it is. A lot of people are not accepting of homosexuals. By showing these athletes, they create an initial culture shock. Others will come out as well, until they are a common part of professional sports. As they become common, people will begin to be more accepting of them. Eventually it will bother very few people. It is hard to hate someone when they help your team have a great season, especially if they contribute a lot to winning a championship. Same thing happened with African-American athletes in the 40's and 50's.

tl;dr
Sports are very influential, and the hype will help make them seem more common, and will cause people to be more accepting. Basically the same thing happened with black athletes as well.

He's not in the NFL yet, and he significantly hurt his chances by coming out just before the draft where he was already a fringe prospect. Teams won't want to deal with possible locker room issues and the media circus for a fringe rookie.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe any Big 4 player who has come out has been on an active roster since they came out.
User avatar #72 to #59 - silentfapper (02/12/2014) [-]
Yeah, but the thing is, he is REALLY good at what he does. He led the SEC in sacks in 2013. This may have hurt his chances, but there is still a very significant chance that he gets drafted.

Holy **** these kinds of posts really sicken me, I have no idea how being gay feels like so sorry if I say something wrong. what the **** , man? just because certain people who are intelligent enough to accept homosexuality choose to ignore it, doesn't mean everyone is so open to it. some people will make fun of you, beat you up or even kill you for being gay. its still considered taboo in certain places, if we stop talking about it, stop promoting it enough people won't come out and it will not be considered okay, and we will not move forward. in my personal opinion we should keep promoting gays until major population accepts them. just like when black people weren't respected, when they passed the law against black discrimination there still were some people uncivilized enough to hate on them! just because some people thought they should have had same rights, not everyone agreed, so yeah there will always be people holding us back but what it all comes down to is how you raise your children.
TL;DR - promoting gays should still go on, because only a fragment of the world accepts them

My question would be, why does it matter that he's gay? Is it a disadvantage or advantage to be gay? Does it somehow make it more of an achievement that the person was Gay? These are the things I will probably never understand when someone can climb Everest, then years later another one goes up the mountain and goes...WOW what an Accomplishment. Why? It's already been done. Well you see.....a female did it.... So? Well they're not supposed to....(or whatever reasoning they give) This is how I feel it is here again.

You want to solve this problem? Teach apathy. It's done great for me since I don't care who you are or where you come from, who you **** or any of that crap. I'll hate you or love you based on your actions.

I don't see how your Gender or Orientation has any bearing on your success so I don't see why it should be promoted. Well Gays need people to look up to ...Why? Because straight role models are ****** ? I see this in the minority community as well. We need more Black Heroes....why do you need to look up to someone that looks like you to be inspired or to want to be successful?
User avatar #26 to #25 - icameheretotroll (02/12/2014) [-]
Being gay at this time is a disadvantage, and yes it's an achievement to come out as a homosexual at this era because you will lose respect from A LOOOOOT of people.
sure, you might be tolerating but the whole world doesn't see the same way, ignorant bigots need other people to tell them that being gay is okay so thats the main reason for gay parades
#29 to #26 - pyrusd (02/12/2014) [-]
Which I get it's a disadvantage because of the social stand points but in your example just now, How the hell does a parade with drag queens, men in thongs, and HA LOOK AT ME IM GAY AAAAAHHHH help the cause to be accepted especially since parades are exclusively lewd. If you were to sit a gay man next to me in a suit and tie. Neil Patrick Harris. I doubt ANYONE would have a problem. But if you were to sit some guy with feathers up his ass, speaking in a lisp and being an overall stereotype, just to hear him say THIS IS HOW GAYS ARE YOU NEED TO ACCEPT IT....that'll piss me off and I don't care whether or not hes gay. But him acting like that...no way.

#91 to #47 - pyrusd (02/12/2014) [-]
Alright so by saying they're special and deserve a parade....makes them equal to us....by us not getting a parade.... Again this is how easy the logic is for me. If you and I both have 1$ that is equal. They have a parade, straights don't. That's not equal. The fact that they need a parade and support one basically says they're not equal and they don't want to be.

Gay people just want equality, right? Of course they do. They want to be treated no differently from anyone else. And yet they don't treat themselves that way. Ever heard of a Straight Pride parade? Of course not. Ever heard of an athlete making national headlines for coming out as straight? Of course not.

As long as they continue to treat themselves as being different, so will everyone else. And if your sexuality is the most important thing about you, you've made a serious mistake somewhere.

I sure hope you're joking.. I hope to god you're joking because if there is a person that stupid on the internet, you bring down the whole average IQ of funnyjunk by about 50

I'm straight and I would NEVER request a straight parade, merely because nobody ever gets discriminated for being straight, you won't ever get beat up for being straight or get a job denial for being straight or anything similar.
gays, however are still considered taboo in certain places of the world and in order to fight it, we need to promote the fact that they are equal and need to be treated equal
what you do not understand is that parades aren't saying WE'RE BETTER THAN U
they're saying WE ARE JUST AS GOOD AS YOU

thx

Right, you won't get beat up for being straight SPECIFICALLY. But having blonde hair, different shoes, no education, be fatter, slower, less athletic, less musical, or let's just say different than others in general will get you made fun of or beat up so whyyyy is it special if it happens to someone who's gay? People are going around doing the knock out game for Fun....for no reason AT ALL and yet....if you were gay it would some how be a worse offense?
User avatar #30 to #27 - icameheretotroll (02/12/2014) [-]
Dude, you have no idea how many fagits were killed just for being homosexuals do you
and yes, the society is ****** up they will make fun of anyone for being different but when it comes to something that isn't considered appropriate in the dimwit society, it might make people do horrible things, while being fatter and less athletic yadda yadda will give you a tough time, you will eventually learn that you weren't that much different, but you just weren't stylish enough or ******** , and years will pass and you will grow out of it, realize that you were smarter than them, maybe even have the chance to improve your life. while homosexuals however hey fagits correct me if im wrong might even believe that its their fault they're gay because society hates on them so much, they will try their best to fix that and fail miserably because its just the way they're born also correct me if im wrong at this
#41 to #30 - pyrusd (02/12/2014) [-]
And that's why I don't get there should be any special treatment for it. If you're born with a lazy eye and made fun of.....you probably will grow up your whole life and not be able to fix it because you were born that way. Or many other birth defects that afflict kids. I don't see how all of a sudden being gay and bashed for it somehow puts you out in the lead for being picked on. As if they say NO NO I HAD IT WORSE because I'm gay.
User avatar #48 to #41 - icameheretotroll (02/12/2014) [-]
Being made fun of is one thing, being beaten, told that you will go to hell, being told that you're an abomination or even being killed because of that is another

if you have a lazy eye or any birth defect, for that matter, your family will support you and tell you that its not your fault, that you're good just the way you are. but from what i've heard if you come out to your family you might even be disowned
User avatar #98 to #48 - tkgm (02/12/2014) [-]
Beeing beaten and told that you will go to hell.....

I think we have to put an end to such stupid christian believes or religion in general. Not beeing a ******* atheist but the ideology of religious ppl is just ******* stupid! I mean if you believe in god and afterlife it's cool, if you like to go to church and sing and lsten to some good ol' stories..okay..but if (almost) a whole society follows a cult that's calling ppl to hate other ppl because of their religion, sexuality or whatever, than it needs to be banned, because it tears mankind apart and raises hate.

I also think that people who beat up gays do it, because they are searching for something, someone to hate, a reason to beat them. They don't really care about their sexuality but use it as an excuse. For fun, that's what real stupidity is all about. Hating something because you are bored and wanna have fun in the most idiotic way.

So I believe that we don't need gayparades. The hate for gay ppl has other origins than just pain hate and we need to focus on destroying them. Otherwise it will stay a catch-22 because people urge other ppl.
#92 to #48 - pyrusd (02/12/2014) [-]
I guess people have it easier then. I lost an adult tooth growing up and was beaten for it in school. Then I got bigger than everyone and it stopped. But at the time no one helped. School didn't, parents didn't so I again really don't get why all of a sudden it's a big deal to be made fun of for being gay OR killed. As I mentioned before with the Knock Out game or things similar. Old woman randomly punched / beaten and robbed for a couple bucks. Tons of those videos on Youtube. BUT...BUT....Guy gets called Fag....BREAKING NEWS. I don't get why it all of a sudden seems more important to have a negative action against you when you're gay and yet, someone in the same spot who's not gay, lesser crime.
#54 to #22 - anon (02/12/2014) [-]
You realize that your hyperbolic, ad hominem insults accomplish nothing but demeaning your arguments, right?

Holding parades and congratulating people on their sexuality is not the way to gain equality. If they stop making a big deal about themselves and quietly go about their life, eventually everyone else will too. This obviously excludes places like the Middle East where even the government is resolutely anti-gay, but if you honestly believe a parade is going to change their minds then you're even more misinformed than you seem.
User avatar #107 to #54 - icameheretotroll (02/12/2014) [-]

User avatar #100 to #54 - hermaeousmora (02/12/2014) [-]

Alright, answer 1 question for me. Why should gay people be immune to hate? Every living human has to deal with someone hating them for reasons they can or can't control yet when someone hates someone else for being gay, it is a surprise?
User avatar #108 to #75 - icameheretotroll (02/12/2014) [-]
Whenever they accept themselves and the society evolves to the point where we wont cause physical harm just because of they're gay, then we will take a step forward, I'm not saying that they should be immune to hate, hell even black people are hated even after everything. all I'm saying is that whenever society stops punishing them greatly, they will accept themselves too
User avatar #109 to #108 - toosexyforyou (02/12/2014) [-]
People have been beaten for being black, white, chinese, mexican, etc. People have and are being beaten for sillier reasons than being gay, why do you think gay people should be immune to hate when everyone else has to live with it.
User avatar #110 to #109 - icameheretotroll (02/12/2014) [-]
Because gays are told that they are mentally sick, even if you're beat for your skin color or your hair color or whatever the **** , you will still grow out of it, realize that they're now worthless in the streets begging for money. what I'm saying is that whenever gays are beaten they are told that they will go to hell, they are mentally ill, its their fault they're gay, they're unmanly and many other **** which is kind of a mental strain for an individual to bear.

to sum it up, the parades are meant to promote equality, not to say that gays are better than any other group of people that are discriminated, its meant to promote that humans need to be tolerated, be it a different race, gender, religion, opinions, ideas or sexuality.
User avatar #38 - skubasteve (02/12/2014) [-]
He is an attention whore, looking for a higher spot on the draft. He is a great player and would of been picked regardless but now is using his sexual orientation to get one higher. What a faggot.
User avatar #44 to #38 - misterbonzo (02/12/2014) [-]
probably not. odds are his draft stock will decrease, as a gay player on the team would be a "distraction"

Then he has grounds to sue : /

This is why NFL shouldn't be reality T.V.
User avatar #61 to #46 - mutantpanda (02/12/2014) [-]
misterbonzo is right, he tanked his draft position by coming out because he is a fringe prospect and will attract a media circus that most teams won't want to deal with for a borderline player. The teams that are willing to take him despite this (Jets maybe, they like the spotlight) know he will be around later in the draft and probably will go undrafted, so they won't invest valuable draft capital in a publicity stunt.

He won't have grounds to sue unless some idiot specifically says that they passed on drafting him solely because of his sexual orientation. If he does go undrafted and pursues it, all teams will claim that they did not feel that he was a good enough player, which they can easily do considering that he was a 4-7 round prospect before he came out and those types often go undrafted.

they make a big deal out of it because openly gay men are very very uncommon in American professional sports- this Sam guy would be the first in the NFL, Jason Collins is the only one in the NBA, and there has never been one in the MLB or NHL. some athletes wouldn't readily accept a gay teammate, partially because it's so uncommon that they don't really understand gay people and would feel uncomfortable (they'd think their gay teammate would be ogling them in the locker room, etc.). but i agree, it shouldn't be a big deal. given the number of people in a major sports league, nearly every athlete in major american pro sports has a gay teammate, they just might not know it yet.
