A couple of friends and I host a weekly DnD session through roll20 and we have weekly guests. We also stream our sessions if anyone is interested in watching. We have it every Saturday if anyone is interested.

I haven't played D&D since middle school so this is an honest question. Do people ever do serious games? All of the stories of people's campaigns on here just kill all of the interest I have of getting back into the game because dick jokes just aren't that funny to me anymore. I'm old.

I am actually thinking about doing something with D&D for my dissertation but the prospect looks grim if funyjunk is an indicator of what my experience would be like.
User avatar #38 to #34 - thereisaguy (04/27/2014) [-]
Yeah, serious enough at least. My groups make jokes and stuff but I do a pretty alright job of creating tension and getting the players invested.
User avatar #162 to #34 - kwag (04/27/2014) [-]
Well I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging, but though there is comedy here and there, my mods are usually serious and have a decent story to them, and there isn't nary a phallus joke to be heard. If you're interested, shoot me an email at lyokomasterodd@gmail.com
User avatar #43 to #34 - dndxplain (04/27/2014) [-]
that is actually part of the issue I have as a DM. As you can see, I made this account to get people interested in DnD, and I've been playing with a few people from funnyjunk. the first question I recieved was 'do you allow shenanigans'. to answer, I do actually. that's the immediate answer at least. it's hard to explain to someone that I like natural, spur of the moment shenanigans, not 'hurr durr let's act stupid and silly'
User avatar #50 to #43 - swizzll (04/27/2014) [-]
Is there anyway to get in on the dnd action? well, maybe after my exams I've always wanted to play, and i'd like to try some serious roleplaying, not just playing for ***** and giggles
User avatar #53 to #50 - dndxplain (04/27/2014) [-]
I run a group on skype for pathfinder (I prefer starting people new to tabletops out on pathfinder, as it's less complex than dnd). you could always try on roll20 if you just want to hop right in
User avatar #142 to #53 - defaultanonymouse (04/27/2014) [-]
Hooray, Pathfinder! A somewhat more powerful, relatively better balanced, generally smoother and much easier to learn system than 3.5e!

What style of game play do you use? I'm privy to nonlinear story, but most groups I know or have run contain a kick-in-the-door member that has trouble being immersed... or being a character instead of a sheet.
User avatar #145 to #142 - dndxplain (04/27/2014) [-]
I homebrew most of my games, and I prefer something both meta and nonmeta, if that makes sense. I love the mechanics as much as I love roleplaying

You seem like a glorious individual. Experimentation and adaptation leads to survival! I might like to speak with you in the future...

I don't have many friends to play with... even less who are competent. Or very many friends. I don't get out much with my schedule.

I like flipping through multiple genres in a plot when I get a good group. Some days the characters are privy to absolute dread and character building, others are a good laugh and a lot of fist bumping. Many times a good slaughter can warm up a party for a long day.

My big issue is when I want certain details to remain in the metagame zone while one of my players cannot differentiate between character and reality. Plot is only as lasting as his attention span. Any suggestions for keeping a kick-in-the-door gamer interested when they only care about high damage mechanics?

User avatar #35 to #34 - goldenglimmer (04/27/2014) [-]
I don't think so. I'd be up for playing a serious game with RP and **** . My old DM used to give bonuses (unnoticed by us at the time) to the rolls of players who roleplayed their decisions in game.
User avatar #160 to #35 - defaultanonymouse (04/27/2014) [-]
That is me with the Diplomacy skill. Having a Diplomacy score is meaningless to me if you cannot use it. If you can properly argue in a way that would adequately convince the character(s) or group(s) I have set, your roll is only a benefactor to the conversation.

Falter on your words, but roll a natural 20? Sure, you can recover from a fumble. Roll a natural one, but have a high charisma score and articulate in a way that makes my heart flutter? No worries, you probably still got something quite decent.

Dang. I dunno, sounds like that could potentially tip the balance of challenge/reward to the point where things starts to feel less entertaining. I might be wrong and it might've all been a whole lotta fun, but when you give a child or a dog a huge supply of toys to play with, they will usually not have as much fun as if you give them one toy for them to cherish and live. The same thing applies to how you have to balance out how much the players get for their efforts. Sometimes, a game is more fun when you slap it, and it slaps you back.

Depending on the exact system you are looking to play, I might be interested in joining. I have been playing for a few years now, and have found that the most enjoyable games are the ones where players can role play.

I used to be a power gamer, but I now use my knowledge for the good of balance, semi-fair play, and the enjoyment of willing players.

I am a willing Assistant-Game/Dungeon-Master, but do not have the time to run or plot another full campaign, as I like leaving storytelling to the experts and simply help the rules flow easier.

What sort of practice do you have in the world of Pen & Paper games, if any? How about in role playing?

We spent two hours in the second session trying to kill three guys because everyone's shots kept missing. When your ballistics skills are (at highest) 35, nothing gets done. The DM cancelled the game because it was really boring and a bunch of people never showed up.

I've had a game where the rogue was only useful when he was off by himself. We had one fight where he rolled **** and cut the sword hand off of our NPC captain. This threw the captain off balance and the alligator we were fighting bit his face off.

The rogue then went scouting, killed three bandits by himself without taking damage and then found a jewel encrusted spyglass, worth about 15,000 gold.

Thank you so much - I've been wanting to try playing D&D - when my work load lets up a bit, I'll definitely check it out.

My roommate one year tried to get me into it a few years back but I just didn't have the time. He ran me through a very short story and dungeon just to get a feel for it. Long story short, I was a very clumsy dwarf.

"OK, I just need to pass this deliberately easy stealth roll." *rolls a 3 - fails*
"Oh hey, that looks like a boss, so I'll use my daily power." *rolls a 1 - critical fail*
User avatar #137 to #25 - commontroll (04/27/2014) [-]
My first game was as a retarded dwarf. He was a ranger, with a very high constitution, good strength, and extremely high dex. However, his Charisma was 2 (not a modifier, that was his actual charisma), Int was 6, and wis was god knows how low, I believe 8.

However, I had ridiculous check modifiers for jump, balance, spot, listen, and several others. It was fantastic.
User avatar #146 to #25 - defaultanonymouse (04/27/2014) [-]
Have you ever seen the movie trilogy for The Gamers? You can find them on Youtube. The first movie contains a very unlucky brawns character who has a tendency to fail easy rolls.

"You find a set of massive metal bars blocking your way."
"I rip them out of the way."
"What's your strength?"
"19. That's a 95% chance of success!"
"Roll 'em."
*Natural one* "I don't believe this..."

Heh, I love Roll20. I'm in a campaign currently where everyone from the beginning of the game either died horribly or left the party. Some who left then died horribly. Also we have the holiest skeleton in existence.
