I did really enjoy Code Geass actually! And is Psycho-Pass as good in the long run? I watched a few episodes and it was somewhat interesting, if only because I am a psychologist and I find a completely different take on mental health to be intriguing, but I have yet to actually watch it.

If you really like the supernatural intertwining with the normality of everyday lives, along with repercussions that change the character's forever... then I would suggest The Future Diary or Mirai Nikki as it is also called. . It was one of the first animes I've seen and mangas that I've read and I was hooked ever since. It's crazy as all Hell, but I won't say much because just a little spoiler taints the experience. I may be over playing it, but I just love aphotic animes!

This site is one of my favorites and it has pretty much all animes that I can think of! I would also like to recommend Psycho-Pass, it quickly became apart of my top ten animes that I enjoy. If you're looking for others then Tokyo Ghoul and Blood Blockade Battlefront are very enjoyable as well, though they are more on the fanatical supernatural side.
Similar gritty tone with several shared themes. Psycho-Pass places a heavier emphasis on action but, much like Death Note, does not rely on action to progress the story.
The feel of these two shows is eerily familiar, and especially till the end. They are both thinking animes with lots of complex themes and dramatic moments that take place within a nail-biting struggle between two highly compelling and highly intelligent sides as they wage a war where ideologies may be similar, but ends aren't.
Both have a genius criminal with arguably just ends but who use horrible(and brutally efficient) methods to achieve it. Both antagonists are maniacs who want to rid the society of an evil that the viewer identifies and is familiar with, so their cause can often be identified with, and so choosing the villain or protagonist is not so easy.
Both also have a side of detectives fighting to preserve order and condemning the criminal's methods for his better world, even if they agree to hate the evil he is indirectly fighitng to destroy. Both have a bit of corruption and internal turmoil among the side of the detectives.
Both anime play very lightly with the lives of characters, and the deaths are almost always the result of a long and elaborate game of wits, which involves a lot of nail-biting possibilities, and apprehension. They deaths are very visceral in both and leave an impression on both you and the characters.
it is sort of depressing but I feel like the overall message can give you a bittersweet sense of closure. Its not one of my favorites but it was definitely interesting, insightful, and worth giving it a shot.
It is undeniably objectively good. If you're a fan of dubs, I'd definitely recommend it simply because Chris Patton's performance is nothing short of amazing. The manga is also good, though it is slightly different. It is certainly funny, but it also speaks to some very real human emotions. I hope you enjoy it!
You should also read the light novel. It's surprisingly even less happy, but the characters are a bit more extreme and therefore not quite as relatable.
If you can relate to the main character at all, it's quite hard to watch.
I found myself just laying in bed for minutes to hours after watching some episodes. Really makes you think about your own life. (that is, again, if you can relate to his circumstances)
Ditto! It kinda made me better my self then how I was. It pushed me to do other things on my free time besides watching anime. But it also shows you how that problem is starting to affect the world we live in today.
I thought the message was the exact opposite. As much work as Misaki put in, he didn't really break out until he was forced to. The message being "Other people can give direction, but in the end it will have to be you who changes you"
Well that is true to the story but put it in other aspects. It does not necessarily have to be a girl it can be a push or pull from a friend or family member. Or in this case people that hunt down neets and show them how to progress.
Theres an image that goes around showing a before and after. The before is "Haha, this guy looks like a loser, this will be great!" and the after is "oh god i am that loser."
Not only is Sato completely relateable, but while you're watching it, you will find a situation he's put in that you've been in before. It will also likely feature a problem Sato has that you too probably have, and it makes you confront this problem just like it makes Sato confront this problem.
Watching it can make you feel horrible, but just like with Sato, you come out of it wanting to be better than you are. While its a horribly depression show, its one that lifts you up at the same time and tells you to do something about the cause of your problem rather than simply ignore it or grovel in your depression.
As of right now I have the DVD sitting right next to me in a stack. Its still one of my favorite shows ever.
The first time I ever saw Redline, it was at a small theater during a con. One of the nitro scenes was so hype, that it actually blew out the theater's speakers, and lit them on fire.
Yeah, Dark Souls wish it could be as dark as Berserk. Honest question, has anyone found a manga/anime darker than this? I sure as hell haven't, and am curious.
Don't get me wrong, Samurai Champloo is my favorite anime. That **** just beat all the other things I saw, and I don't even like r'n'b.
But it's one director with one way of doing things. And usually if you saw Cowboy bebop, you know you have to see Samurai Champloo.
one of the few tragedy ending i could tolerate yeah it was ******** that she died at the end but at least it wasnt a stupid the hero wins and then she dies because **** you
Guts's girlfriend was gangraped in front of him by his best friend and a horde of demons and he cut his arm off with a broken sword to try and save her. His adoptive dad also sold him to be assraped by a black dude for pocket change.
Jojo isn't really that ****** up after reading berserk.
I'm aware of the twisted and depressing things that happen in Berserk, but that's not even close to the point I was making. It has nothing to do with it at all.
JoJo's got a lot of stuff that clearly was meant for older audiences, I would argue that its target audience is for them and not for the preteen bracket.
I don't really know if JoJo really could fit in any of the genres, due to the whole 'Bizarre' theme that shifts constantly. It's a strong mix of Comedy, Thriller, Action, and Adventure, but I suppose genre mixing could be said for a couple of these other animations (as well as their manga counterparts).
Lists like this always have room for expansion, and then you end up with stuff like the /a/ recommends post.
God damnit I'm a NEET too and I didn't even realise it... To be fair though, I am applying to jobs and waiting for my provisional licence so I can start driving. So some hope...?
A person who stays inside all day, at least the japanese term, is hikikomori. Which is actually what NHK is refering to (Nihon Hikikomori Kyōkai is Japanse Hikikomori Association.), since he convinces himself that their evil plot is to air addicting anime to force NEETs to become hikikomori
This is rather late, but Ghost Hound was pretty interesting. It's that weird middle point where I can't decide if it's horror or thriller, but it might be what you're looking for.
Hmm, if you like psychological horror I would go with Another, Higurashi, Psycho-Pass (it's more of a thriller but with many haunting Madoka Magica, Future Diary, Shiki, Shinsekai yori, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia I haven't seen these and apparently Perfect Blue is a good ******** of a movie I haven't seen it yet either, so I can't judge it .
If you're into the Splatter film area there's Elfen Lied, Genocyber, Berserk, Deadman Wonderland, Corpse Party, Tokyo Ghoul, I guess Psycho-Pass at times, I love it so much, Blood+, Gantz just.... what the **** .
That's the extent of what I know of or found. Hope I helped!
I just googled horror anime and picked out the ones I enjoyed, even if they're mainstream and you may have already seen them.
List of anime I suggest that fall under horror;
Attack on Titan Post-apocalypse style action and giants that eat humans. I love the lot for it, and the animation style is very unique and looks awesome when the humans are fighting. Lots of blood, gore, and dying.
Blue Exorcist I personally wouldn't consider this one to be overly horror-like. It's about Satan's son becoming an exorcist to try to kill Satan for revenge and to save people. It's actually kind of a comedy-action, but I'm assuming it's also listed as horror due to Satan and demons. Not a lot of blood, it can get creepy though. It's one of my favorite animes regardless of genre.
Deadman Wonderland This would def be my top suggestion, it's my favorite horror anime. The plot is outstanding, fighting is awesome, lots of blood and death, but still very interesting and well-done in my opinion. A lot of people hate it because of the ending and that they had to dull-out some stuff in the anime compared to the manga, but I still loved it. There's also cussing in it.
DeathNote I'm writing these under the assumption that you haven't seen or heard of them. I feel like I don't have to for this one, but oh well. Human gets a hold of a shinigami's notebook, so when he writes someone's name in it, they die. /plot
Elfen Lied Truly wonderful, and all the gore you could want. Girl with killer powers and instincts escapes lab and gets a split personality disorder and memory loss. I highly suggest watching it if you haven't already.
Highschool of the Dead I personally liked the plot and idea behind this anime, zombies and such, however, there's non-stop panty shots and it's sexual all the time. I just ignored it and watched it for the story because I like zombies a little too much. The name really says it all.
Higurashi When They Cry 110% horror, also mystery. If you haven't seen it, this is the one you're going to want to go with for a new good horror series. I think there's 3 or so seasons now. It's really amazing and twisted. And I will warn you that it will be very confusing to watch at first, but eventually towards the end, everything falls together and what's happening will hit you, with lots of gorey deaths in between.
Tokyo Ghoul A human gets transplanted ghoul body parts thus making him half and half. I actually haven't finished watching it myself yet, due to it being VERY slow paced. Apparently the last couple episodes are when it gets good, and I'm too impatient to sit down and watch all the slow ones at once. However, it is good so far, and I've only ever heard fantastic things about it.
Well to be fair, I heard they were supposed to make a second season but weren't able to due to the violence etc. If that is the case, then I could see why they didn't make a finalizing ending, otherwise then it'd end up like season 2 of Black Butler, which was god awful.
Speaking of which, that's a horror one I'd suggest too, just not season 2. Halfway through the season 1 it splits from the manga until BB Circus but it's still not bad.
On DW though I haven't read the manga yet so I don't know how it's supposed to end or anything, so coming from that stand point I didn't mind it, but I'm sure once I read it I'll get upset, but until then I like it.
If you find the humor in Welcome to the NHK a little dark or depressing, I'd recommend giving Genshiken a watch. I usually hate slice of life student comedy stuff, but I found Genshiken has its own realistic charm.
Also there's tons of anime/game/movie references in there...a lot of them focused around Guilty Gear for some reason.
