Well drawn comic and all, but there's no way Rick would respond like that. Especially the end frame. Very unlike the series. If this happened in the show, he'd shrug it off and invent something to stop Morty drinking.
Remember, Rick is not the 'average human'. He loves Morty which is loosely portrayed in the second season but he basically knows everything and can foresee outcomes and what to do about them, he wouldn't give up like he does in the comic
"Listen Morty, I hate to break it to you, but - what people call 'love' is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed.
It hits hard Morty, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failing marriage.
I did it, your parents are going to do it.
Break the cycle, Morty.
Rise above.
Focus on science".
Rick has surpassed emotion and become the definition of apathy.
I think you completely misunderstood his point if you think he's saying he succeeded. He's saying he. like morty's parents, suffered. And he wishes something different for Morty.
Nah, man. He is depressed. It's even revealed in the season 1 finale his meaningless catchphrase means "I am in great pain." Throughout the show it becomes clear his indifference is just an aggressive mask. He clearly cares about Morty, as seen in the pictures on Birdman's wall. He sacrifices himself for Morty in the first episode of Season 2 and says "be better than me" before he realizes he can save himself too. When talking with Ice-T, he says that drifting through space and not caring really isn't that great. As the other guy mentioned, he almost kills himself after Unity left him, and behaves unlike himself.
The show is good at helping you read between the lines. To think just because on the surface he has this ambivalent persona that he isn't very depressed inside is really ignoring all the aforementioned minutiae.
Doesn't the last episode of season 1 have Bird Person explaining what wubba lubba dub dub means, implying that it being Rick's catchphrase through most of the season means he's secretly depressed?
I originally thought that but as the show has progressed you have seen some emotions form him, especially in the video that archangelnight linked. Personally, to me it seems that Rick is apathetic as a means of defense.
he did sort of go into a sort of extreme mental breakdown (to the point of almost commiting suicide)after his split with unity. i wouldnt put it past rick to cry in silence over something like that. Its common with emotionally unsettled people like that.
I know
I'm just waiting for the episode where future Morty shows up and he's basically Rick unless Rick is just morty grown up and he is going back in time to hang out with his younger self so he can enjoy his innocence and joyful youth again
Thank you for posting this, i don't know why but pushed me over the edge and helped me to finally cry and let it out I've been struggling with my recent break up and having a really hard time getting past the pain of it
