I'm pretty sure everyone in the theatre when I saw it thought it was "the finger" too.

It makes less sense being the thumb. They weren't on good terms when they first met, still didn't come good when Finn tried to weasel his way out. BB-8 could only begrudgingly agree to Finn's lie so he could deliver the map Poe handed to him.

Because being a Disney movie, a Star Wars movie (you know, the franchise with pretty much no vulgarity in the ways of cursing) and the fact that BB-8 and Finn were buddies for the rest of the movie, and in the context of the scene, the middle finger doesn't make any goddamn sense, means that the thumb is the less likely of the two...

Disney movies have always had veiled curse words as a little something for the adults. I count this as one of them. BB-8 just suddenly trusting the guy with his allegedly dead owner's jacket and flashing him a thumbs up makes the droid seem naive instead of cheeky. And I liked him cheeky.

My question is why is the panel shaped like that? Odd protrusions? It should be a simple quadrilateral or hexagon. NOT an odd shape that can be easily chipped and takes up more shell-space than it should.
