My dad's immensely successful, but consequently was rarely there for me when I was a kid because he's always on business trips/working. Whenever he was home he was too stressed/tired to want to talk to me so all I ever saw of him was his bad side and grew to resent him.

I'd much rather have had a dad like that little girl has. They look like the happiest little family despite their troubles and I envy that.

inb4 I sound like a spoilt kid so I don't know how bad money troubles are. I moved out 2 years ago and have been living support free ever since while still attending uni, I've hit $0 in my account while having rent due simultaneously on a few occasions now I think I've since learned the value of a dollar.

Packing feels into five minutes of video is easier than stretching it for 3 hours
#132 to #74 - migueldecervantes (11/03/2015) [-]
Yes, but with three hours you have more depth, and you have more time to set-up greater emotional resonance.

The only reason Hollywood blockbusters are not as affecting is because it's (sometimes) not what they're going after--but most of the time it is because they suck.

I was in a writing class where we had to show effective usage of ethos in videos and I chose this video. Half the class was in tears by the end of it.
User avatar #8 to #2 - severepwner (11/02/2015) [-]
I'm not entirely sure what ethos means, but I would have chosen that video where there's these chinese guys, the dad and the son have a really rocky relationship and the son eventually just leaves because his dad was being a dick. Then he gets in a construction accident and becomes a paraplegic. His family has to take care of him, and suddenly his dad helps him learn how to walk again.

That one got me.

"Ethos (/ˈiːθɒs/ or US /ˈiːθoʊs/) is a Greek word meaning "character" that is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation, or ideology."

User avatar #11 to #10 - severepwner (11/02/2015) [-]
Damn. Doing a project like that sounds cool as **** .
#164 to #11 - anon (11/03/2015) [-]
The other two are Pathos and Logos for experience and logic respectively. For Pathos just think of an infomercial. Spilled drink? Use the Shamwow! For Logos imagine a commercial about investments or something. But this and you'll start saving $$$. Your bills will go down! Anything that uses evidence or reasoning is Logos. This is a really dumbed down version, though. You could just google it if you want more specific stuff. Most ads are a combination. It's hard to only use one method to persuade someone. Even in these videos where there's no Logos, there's still Pathos. Yeah they're obviously emotional, but you can also relate if someone has ever helped you in your life, especially when you were desperate or if you were ever desperate and really wished someone had helped you. Or if you've ever helped someone in need. Or for the video he was referring to it relates to anyone with a father, wants to be a father, or is a father.
#162 to #11 - anon (11/03/2015) [-]
Ethos one of the 3 persuasion methods from Arostotle. It uses your emotions to persuade you. Mostly these 3 are used for advertisement, at least in my experience. Sometimes, but not often, in debate also. Basically the ad uses your emotions to get you to buy their **** . It's really less awesome sounding than you think it is. I'm assuming his project was simply choosing a good ad that gets you emotional. Probably included a presentation and short explanation.
User avatar #167 to #162 - severepwner (11/03/2015) [-]
All weapons can be good or evil. Things aren't evil, intents are.
User avatar #18 to #8 - mylazy ONLINE (11/02/2015) [-]
Ethos is one of the ways you appeal to people in trying to pursuade them to see your point of view. The other two are pathos and logos.

In a simple way.

Ethos is to make yourself seem credible
Pathos is to appeal to emotion
Logos is to appeal to logic.

Doesn't really seem like an ethos type thing in the video, but what do I know
#161 to #18 - malifauxdeux (11/03/2015) [-]

I never got why FJ hates youtube videos. Do you have a reason?
#124 to #114 - anon (11/03/2015) [-]
mostly so we dont have to leave the page we're on just to watch a video that could be posted in the comment
#169 to #114 - anon (11/25/2015) [-]
We also don't want random FJ **** to show up while browsing youtube
User avatar #170 to #169 - Zarakima (11/25/2015) [-]
what, as in recommendations or something? I do see that having it embedded and therefore more seamless is convenient - but I'd have expected, at least content wise, that a nice HD youtube video would have a shot at frontpage.

but nah.
User avatar #118 to #114 - freakinepic (11/03/2015) [-]
It's a pain in the ass to open up a new tab. FJers would rather watch a video in the same tab as they found it. That's my theory, at least.
User avatar #119 to #118 - Zarakima (11/03/2015) [-]
I suppose in comments - but also youtube videos in content never make it anywhere near frontpage. And youtube videos are often way more HD than half the ****** webms people post
#165 to #119 - anon (11/03/2015) [-]
Yeah youtube has better quality but for really short videos and videos that are already ****** quality(like vines) they don't really matter. Whole videos are better in mp4 for that reason since they can support better quality. I believe the standard for webm is 360 while mp4 is 720, but I could be wrong.

When you take away everybody else’s humanity you take away your own; To live is to suffer. To exist, even as we do, is to resist.

We've eliminated all national wars with globalization and come to the aid of those in need from natural disaster around the world. We go into a country where they hate us, and shoot at us, and endure it- refusing to take the fight to their churches and only shooting back when being shot at. Human kindness is everywhere. It's human suffering that is scarce.
