In DnD settings humans tend to be the most populous race. That means there are the most human villages to be attacked by orcs and have half-orcs sired... now admittedly not all half orcs are the product of a painful and tragic incident, and certainly a PC can have any kind of backstory including a loving orc-human happy family. But yeah.

The other question I suppose is how is procreation even possible? I mean humans can **** a horse but aside from fairy tales we don't have a bunch of centaurs running around.

Fantasy races are genetically compatible with humans, but I believe only humans. Dwarves and Elves cannot sire children.

Are there no gnomes or halflings? I've got to admit, I'm 36 and dodged the DnD stuff when I was a kid and teen, the went into the ARMY so forgive my ignorance. That said my curiosity is genuine.

Gnomes are their own race, and I have yet to hear of a gnome-human offspring
Halflings are as well, same for them.
Half-elves and half-orcs seem to be the most numerous of half-breeds, mostly because of viability and usefulness.
Elves being weak but dexterous, Humans stronger but clumsier
Orcs being pants-on-head retarded but strong, humans being smarter but weaker
