I've never heard of it but apparently many people seem to like it. Are you referring to a book? or movie?

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.

Which movie? I've heard only bad things about them.
User avatar #73 to #68 - ruebezahl (06/11/2014) [-]
As far as movies go, there is only Davd Lynch's 1984 adaptation, which despite its impressive cast is near-universally despised by Frank Herbert fans.

I saw the movie before reading the books, and I think that helped a lot, because I loved (and still love) the movie. If you go into it, expecting a 100% faithful adaptation of the book, then you will be enraged by some of the things that Lynch decided to add (such as the Weirding Modules). But in my opinion, while the movie does not stick word-by-word to the novel, it translates the feeling conveyed by the novel to the screen very well. The constant fear of intrigue, the plans within plans within plans, Paul's ascension into becoming a messiah. It works extremely well for me. But like I said, if you are very attached to the novel, watching the movie might be the worst two hours of your life.

There's also a TV miniseries, which is much more faithful to the books, and which has been received more favorably by fans, but I found it to be lifeless and boring.

Well according to the books, it smells like Cinnamon...so maybe it tastes like it too.
User avatar #37 to #33 - CaptainWasabi (06/11/2014) [-]
Just on a side note... do you think that cinnamon even exists in the Dune universe? like it's waaaay way into the future, whats to say that cinnamon hasn't been rendered extinct? or maybe the spice is mutant space cinnamon?
User avatar #38 to #37 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
I dunno. Maybe. Earth doesn't exist in Dune, who's to say cinnamon doesn't exist anymore. Several Earth animals have been transplanted on Arrakis, and have since gone under mutations much like the Fremen.

But it would be a strange mutation for a product of a plant to evolve and start coming out of the ass of a giant worm, and some how gets properties to extend life and give you prescence.
#48 to #38 - Ethshar (06/11/2014) [-]
Actually,in the Dune universe we glassed Earth with nukes to beat the machines.
Salusa Secondus used to be the capitol of free humanity, the Atreides were bastards, the Harkonnens used to live and died as heroes. And I think there's a description of how spice tastes too.You gotta read more books dude.
User avatar #50 to #48 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
The idea that we destroyed earth in the machine crusade something from the prequels...I don't count those. I tend to stick to Frank Herbert's Dune, which does not state in detail what the Jihad was, just the end result.
#51 to #50 - Ethshar (06/11/2014) [-]
But since Earth isn't mentioned,we can assume the prequels are correct about Earth...
User avatar #52 to #51 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
Earth is referenced in Original Dune. Like in Messiah, Paul asks Stilgar to research Genghis Khan and Hitler in comparison to paul
#53 to #52 - Ethshar (06/11/2014) [-]
In a historical sense, but not that it's still around. It's humanity's first world,if it was still inhabitable it would have considerable political value.

Additionally,I think if anyone who outlived Herbert was told what happened,it would be his son,y'know?
User avatar #55 to #53 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
I take anything from the Expanded Dune series with a grain of salt.

I seriously doubt Frank even considered anything about Earth, just not in his priorities. How would the fate of Earth drive the story of whats going on on Arrakis or Geidi Prime?
#57 to #55 - Ethshar (06/11/2014) [-]
A grain of salt perhaps, but to say Earth being a dead rock in the series is an unlikely outcome is a silly assertion. If Earth was still around,it's where the seat of government would be,holding Earth would do a great deal to legitimize the ruler of mankind, and if they didn't a great deal to discredit them. What kind of two-bit ruler wouldn't make a point of conquering humanity's birth world?
User avatar #59 to #57 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
Well the Series stars in 10,191 AG, and who knows how long that is. it is likely that Earth was destroyed naturally.
#60 to #59 - Ethshar (06/11/2014) [-]
That would refer to the founding of the spacing guild and establishment of the status quo that we see at the start of the first novel, which was about 16,200,making that the year 26,391 Anno Domini.
User avatar #61 to #60 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
Again according to Expanded dune.
User avatar #39 to #38 - itsthatguyagain (06/11/2014) [-]
Or they could have just synthesized cinnamon. Or not, I haven't seen Dune before.
User avatar #40 to #39 - thatguyontheright (06/11/2014) [-]
You cant synthesize the Spice. This becomes apparent after Arrakis is terraformed into a lush green world and the sandworms are almost rendered extinct. You can't make it, only the makers can make it.
User avatar #43 to #40 - itsthatguyagain (06/11/2014) [-]
But I'm pretty sure that cinnamon isn't the spice.
