Don't be a pussy

velvetq Leer:
DEC
why do people say "don' t be a pussy" when talking about
weakness more like "don' t be a man' s ego" because you know
there isn' t nothing more fragile than that
because "pussy" is the shortened form of the word "pusillanimous",
which means "timid, cowardly"
and not the slang word for the female genital region?
literally no one else knows this. nobody.

Wikipedia had a snippet about this from ~2007 - May 2014 that read -

"It has been informally suggested in folk etymology that it is a shortened form of the word "pusillanimous", which comes from Latin words meaning "tiny spirit" and is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "showing a lack of courage or determination" or cowardly. Though this meaning would seem to be consistent with the intention of the word "pussy" when used as an insult toward a man, it is a false cognate unrelated to the Germanic derivations of puss and pussy."

Oddly, it was removed with the claim "I can find nothing mentioning this folk etymology except obvious copies of this article". I guess someone doesn't follow funnyjunk because this stupid claim is on here at least once a month.

I wouldn't say our ego is our most fragile part.

It's our balls

Pussy comes from pussy cat or puss, which is an onomatopoeia for cats (compare Romanian pisica).
Pusillanimous comes from the Latin word pusillanimous = pusillus (very little) + animus (spirit)

"Pussilanimous comes from the word pussilanimous"

Oh man, who would have guessed!

in German you say "weichei", or "soft egg". But "egg" can also mean "testicle".
#13 to #12 - doktorwhat (07/30/2014) [-]
so technically you can use the same word for a man's testicles and a woman's egg. Gender neutrality GENDERNEUTRALIT√ĄT!!!

Go google it. Seriously, it's true **** apparently. Made me laugh when it turned out that was the legit truth.
User avatar #7 to #6 - mutzaki (07/30/2014) [-]
The explanation is much simpler than that. Pussy derives from scaredy-cat.
User avatar #8 to #2 - monswine (07/30/2014) [-]
yeah. It's quite clever but it suggests a layman understanding of greek and latin that really stretches belief. In reality Pussy is a diminutive of Puss (cat) and is a term of endearment for cats and other small animals and was applied to women then effeminate men and eventually cowards. The cowardice probably started as a slang for stealth ''pussyfooting'' for trackers, and ''playing pussy'' referred to dog-fighters using cloud cover. It's not a stretch to go from there to '' ******* pussy, show yourself''. The fact that it also happened to be slang for female genitalia is exactly the kind of thing that excites little boys into using ''bad words'' but it wasn't until the 1800's. Wuss and Wussy are likely results of rhyming slang ''pussy-wussy''. source: etymonline.com

I think that when we say "Don't be a pussy" we're talking about "Pussy cat"
Childish, yes. Oddly effective, damn right.
#36 - eyecontacthandjob (07/30/2014) [-]
Pusillanimous is an adjective, so you would not say "Don't be a pusillanimous"....
#15 - davyjoneslocker (07/30/2014) [-]
You're making the pussy into this great big Greek goddess named 'Pussalia'
User avatar #25 - desdemona (07/30/2014) [-]
I didn't know the main reason but I always thought a Pussy as in a cat - scaredy cat
User avatar #16 - Crusader (07/30/2014) [-]
Except no, that's not right.

The term "pussy" to refer to someone who was weak or cowardly was first found in common people. The group least likely to know about a word such as "pusillanimous".

What's more likely is that it's a variation of the word "pursy", which is used to describe someone who is asthmatic, or unable to do things.

Combine that with the term "pussy" and you have a term that is both related to the inability to do things, and something that is by it's very nature not masculine, the vagina, an ancient symbol of femininity.

Look at " **** " a combination of the Germanic word"fokken" which means "to breed" Jim and Jane are *******
"Fuk" from Indo-Europe which means "to strike" To **** someone
Two terms likely to be used by common folk (where most curses and insults originated) and much more likely than "Fornicating Under Consent of the King"

Occam's razor folks, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

Why can't tumblr feminists just live with like the smallest amount of **** in their life? just the slightest shade of brown on their banana and they won't eat it and they'll get angry at the manufacturer?
User avatar #37 to #29 - alekksandar (07/30/2014) [-]
Attention whores.
User avatar #38 to #29 - lanfearandthecup (07/30/2014) [-]
i dont know... but i wont eat a banana if it has brown... i wont get angry but i am not eating a **** banana...
#31 to #29 - Rascal (07/30/2014) [-]
That is pretty unrelated to the content. The only connection is Tumblr.
User avatar #33 to #31 - uncanny (07/30/2014) [-]
Well the idea is that they won't even live with the saying "Don't be a pussy"
User avatar #19 - nuclearkitteh (07/30/2014) [-]
Because there isn't nothing weaker than it. Which means there are weaker things.
