I'd say it's a cruel way to do it, but it's a good result. Of course these people are allowed to have their fandoms and be who they are, because this is what makes them happy, and noone should be denied something that makes them happy (except if it makes other people unhappy (inb4 murder)). But by showing them how they are being concieved by society, they can be made to realize that 'fitting in', isn't being untrue to oneself, it's simply following human socilization-patterns, and this will allow them to give better first expressions, then get to know people, and then they can reveal their true selves, at a stage where other people will be comfortable around them (inb4 murder).

True, but at some point those people who ridicule you for what you like aren't going to benifit you in anyway so I see two solutions to this. Either one give a **** what people say change your ways or two not give a single **** and they will eventually give up and leave because **** what some people say, if you like ponies and **** go ahead and rub your dick in them all you like, its pretty much like religion. Some people like it and some don't but just don't rub your junk in people's faces ( ponies, fandom, etc.) expecting to have people like you.

you are doing a good thing, you are pretty much handing them a safe environment to say "hey dude this is what you look like" and this helps them become more self aware so they can better blend into society and not be so obnoxious. it makes them realize "hey, this isnt how normal people behave i probably need to change so i dont look like this" this will help them be more social and expand their group of friends to a wider range
User avatar #72 to #46 - miltorky ONLINE (02/07/2014) [-]
Because a normal society is what matters in the long run. I hate to break it to you but this odd obsession with "fitting in" is asinine. People have their likes and dislike, people have their quirks and unique personalities. Getting people to blend in with "normal society" is a sure fire way to cripple individuality. Many of the people we consider paragons of their profession or hobby were eccentric, strange, and frowned apon by normal society. Salvador Dali, Van Gogh. Picasso, HR Giger, Einstein, **** even Kurt Cobain. They were all outcasts and they all had obsessions or personality types that went against the normal people. Point is, if you normalize society you breed in weakness. So long as they are happy and leave you be, why should it matter?

Any more quotes from Hot Topic? There's nothing wrong with liking what you do, it's when these people shove their **** in other people's faces or just act obnoxious in general that people don't like it, and it's what most of the cringe comp people do. I wouldn't want to go near any of those "women are obligated to sleep with me" guys, or the people who bring MLP into anything. Nobody wants you give it up and stop it, and in no way does asking somebody to stop being obnoxious cause them to conform. We all have our own individual selves, and you being unique is a given since birth, it doesn't have to be flaunted constantly to the point it drives everyone nuts. Plus if you haven't noticed, being "unique" is it's own trend now anyway, defeating the purpose.

TLDR: You're always an individual, you won't lose it by toning it down, and not everyone needs to hear your declaration of uniqueness.

It's normal to be weird.
It's weird to be so openly weird that you don't fit in.
Though it's important to be yourself and not change based on what society expects of you, it's also important to act like you can adapt to your surroundings and make others feel comfortable to be around you.

What worries me, though, is that they probably took the criticism personally and don't know that the problem is simply that it's hurtful to pull people out of their comfort zone without their permission. Now they'll turn all mopey and bleak without actually learning anything.

I don't think this makes OP a bad person, in a way it's kind of like holding up a mirror and saying "dude, look at what you've let yourself become". Maybe it gives them a chance to step back and be like "Wow, do I really look that bad?". When they realize the truth, they finally take steps to correct their behavior and lifestyle. Either that or they care more about keeping OP as their friend than their fandoms and habits, and respect OP enough to tone it down a bit. And before anyone says "Oh they should be allowed to enjoy what they want" that is true, however we are talking about cringeworthy habits, not just slightly odd.

Heres the problem with you. With everyone on FJ. There is a collective "Were different, and we don't give a **** attitude" from almost everyone on this site. You have furries, gays, bisexuals, bronies, weaboos, otakus, etc, etc. My point begin you all claim to not give a **** about who you are, and what you do, and you preach that anyone can do as they please. However, the minute someone else has a different lifestyle that suits them and makes them relatively comfortable, but you don't think its normal (on a side note, I ask you to define "normal") you rev up the engines and strt blasting them and demeaning them. The sad part is eventually it becomes a bandwagon and you gang up on the group and treat them like **** . Only seeing the terrible parts to exploit and cause a bad image instead of also the potential good aspects of that person or group. Its called an "iceberg" you only see the very small good/bad top and ignore the bottom or let the top influence the rest of your opinions on the bottom half. Take bronies for example. the raw facts are that you don't like, even loathe them, to the point where a lot of you don't even accept them as human beings anymore. This is because of a life choice they made that makes them happy. You see grown men enjoying a TV show originally meant for little girls with a fanatic devotion, who will do anything to convert you to one of them. You consider them "autistic", which I guess means you don't know the definition of autism either. and group them all into the group of people who fit the look of "neckbeard, fedora(A.K.A. trilby as its properly known) wearing basement dwellers. I can tell you that this isnt true either, you all just get so caught up with making sure you fit in with everyone else and hate them because its cool. A lot of them are really good people, a charity was placed for a young man who attempted to commit suicide for being bullied because he was a brony and its raised over $60K now. all for one child.
User avatar #331 to #298 - palmsspaghetti (02/08/2014) [-]
I really don't want to come off as a dick but here is the Merriam-Webster definition for "Autism"
1.a developmental disorder that appears by age three and that is variable in expression but is recognized and diagnosed by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships, by impairment of the ability to communicate with others, and by stereotyped behavior patterns especially as exhibited by a preoccupation with repetitive activities of restricted focus rather than with flexible and imaginative ones
And again, everyone's definition of normal is different but mainly when we say "normal" we mean by the societal majority definition of "normal"
Now ALL that being said, I genuinely like everyone regardless of their personal preferences and habits. Especially here on FJ. I love all you guys.
User avatar #337 to #331 - alfrebecht ONLINE (02/08/2014) [-]
There's a difference between "incapable of" and "engaging in activities that prevent."

If I make a series of decisions that make me unsociable, I'm not autistic if I was CAPABLE of the opposite actions.
User avatar #341 to #337 - palmsspaghetti (02/08/2014) [-]
No I don't mean to say that they are autistic. I'm just saying that the reason some people use that term is because they liken some of the symptoms to the behaviors of overly-aggressive/obsessive fans of these things (mlp, anime, etc.). And again, not to come off as a dick because that's not what I'm trying to achieve here, it's not the incapability to form normal social relationships; it's the impairment of the ability. If you're drunk, your ability to drive isn't revoked by that fact but merely impaired which makes it difficult but not impossible.

Oh, well sure, a coconut is capable of forming complex relationships given the right scenario, that was just a synonymous error due to lack of attention on my part

And, good, I totally misunderstood your message.
User avatar #346 to #345 - palmsspaghetti (02/08/2014) [-]
Thank you. I was hoping we could understand each other. The internet is such a difficult medium for coming to a logical and mutual understanding.

And just to get the elephant in the room out of the way, "Are you suggesting coconuts migrate?!"

I was going for Wilson.

But I mean, no. They could be carried I suppose...
On a vine or something.

What, held under the dorsal feathers?

Spose.
Might be too heavy for a european bird.
Ah well, forget the whole thing.

I ******* enjoyed this way more than I should have.

It's harder to notice until you wind up on the wrong side of it.

i used to resent people because they were bronies, or liked anime or stupid **** like that, but now i operate on the rule that as long as the person isn't harming anybody, even if i don't really agree with their opinion/lifestyle, i won't criticize them. if they're being creepy/menacing or posting like porn and **** i will, but that's a different story

You don't see the good side because you're all too focused on the bad. I realize that I have a bias due to being a brony myself so this is pretty moot, but I also want to say that most of us realize that a lot of people in the fandom can be overbearing, annoying little cunts. There is nothing we can do about that because its their choice. I dunno. im done now, ill be quiet. Just wanted to get that out of my system.

I dropped out of using the term "brony" for myself because the "brony" community is creepy as **** . Seriously, just go look at the general fans and tell me they're normal people. And you really shouldn't say "everyone on FJ" because you and I are both on here, not hating. And not everyone does.. Just a few assholes.
I really commented just to use this gif for the first time.

I used "everyone" because when you see a "faith in humanity restored" post its about someone actually being a human being, and not being a sociopathic cunt. And then you rave and rave about how amazing it is that something like that happened, and that we need more people like that. Then we get on a topic like this and all of a sudden it becomes " **** that, they aren't real people, and they should be shunned". See what im getting at here?
User avatar #316 to #311 - hesorama (02/08/2014) [-]
I guess. That's just human nature.. Look at the news. Mostly bad things, hardly any good.
User avatar #319 to #316 - agreatusername (02/08/2014) [-]
Don't even get me started on the news.

Sometimes there's just to much bad side for it to be okay?
User avatar #304 to #300 - agreatusername (02/08/2014) [-]
Well, here's the way I see it, and I have to stress. THIS IS MY OPINION!
If they aren't hurting anyone, its not my problem, I don't care. Let them do as they please.
I base everything about a person by that singular persons actions. I don't let that one person mar my view of a particular group he may be a part of.
User avatar #308 to #304 - gggman (02/08/2014) [-]
Sometimes it's just TOO annoying. bronies for example. there's plenty of those going around putting up pictures of ponies and Photoshopping pictures in to something with ponies they deem better for some reason. Of course they're gonna get **** , they look like attention whores. but there's probably one in every five commenter (completely made up stat) that is a brony and they don't get any **** for it. Even when they casually mention it. They might get the random troll giving them **** here and there but who doesn't get one.
User avatar #313 to #308 - agreatusername (02/08/2014) [-]
Well one could say the "Anime fans" do the same thing. Always make something as a reference to a favorite anime, but that is socially accepted.
User avatar #315 to #313 - gggman (02/08/2014) [-]
No it's not. it may seem that way, but only cause they have a bigger fan base, so they're more likely to get someone who also likes anime, then a brony is to get another brony. I find it annoying when there's anime stuff but I'm just the type to leave it alone because I'm lazy. There are boards for all of this stuff you can go to and meet other people like you. yet they continue to post things that aren't just generally funny things. they post things only a brony or someone who likes anime knows.
User avatar #318 to #315 - agreatusername (02/08/2014) [-]
However, you have to admit that if its an unfunny anime post, its largely unacknowledged.
If its a brony, or other various similar posts, its largely noticed and instantly attacked. Im not trying to defend my fandom at all, just pointing out the vast and hypocritical bias that is associated with FJ
User avatar #323 to #318 - gggman (02/08/2014) [-]
well now you just get to the general persona and attitude of fj. How they decide to react to it is a mystery to you actually see them react.
#25 - twilightdusk (02/07/2014) [-]
A lot of people seem to be taking this as the "cringe-worthy" people renouncing their habits.

I think it's more likely that they just took it as a hint to not mention it around OP anymore because they know he'll make fun of them.
#397 - patriotprideboy (02/08/2014) [-]
Eh, not everyone's the same.
I personally just stopped being a brony last year because I ran out of interest in the FIM series.
User avatar #126 - badmotorfinger (02/08/2014) [-]
