people are roughly 80 percent water. water is two parts hydrogen one oxygen,66 percent of 80 percent is math and people are not 90 percent stars

You're kind of wrong; you're right that water is 2 parts hydrogen and 1 part oxygen. But an oxygen atom has 16 times the mass of a hydrogen atom, so much more of a human's mass is oxygen.

How the **** do you smell space when there is no air?

Is seared steak, hot metal and welding fumes the smell of a space station or spacecraft? Then it's not very surprising.
User avatar #11 to #10 - sciencexplain (07/11/2014) [-]
You really believe some of the stuff in these fact comps? Space is a vacuum, so it has no atmosphere and there is a minimal quantity of particles in space. Certainly not enough to create 3 differing smells.

Oh no, I got ******** last time I saw this and said space couldn't have a smell. I got about 100 pinkies down from my argument, but guess what? I now know that space DOES have a smell because it isn't a perfect vacuum and when the astronauts go back inside the station, all the particles floating around can be smelled and they are the same kind of molecules given off when you burn meat on a barbecue grill.
Of course I didn't explain this well.

If you're referring to the space bit, it's not common knowledge. If that's for the other part, I was just hoping you didn't blindly follow what was written on these.

Although the particle density is very low, there are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons floating around. These stick to the gear astronauts are wearing on the space walks and produce the smell back inside the space station/shuttle.

About the burning ice one--

If I rembering correctly from an artical I read on cracked.com, the planet is waaaay larger than earth, but very, very close to its star. The force of gravity of the plant pulls the water so strongly that it forms a pseudo-solid, but it's so also very, very hot. The result is a water-based solid that does not melt due to the force of the planets gravity.

I do not have source, sorry. Just something from the depths of my memory.

How can an astronaut possibly know how space smells if he cant even take a breath outside of his space suit
#51 to #30 - anon (07/12/2014) [-]
The residual particles from space cling to their spacesuits. Once inside the space station, they can safely sniff the suits.

With so many planets capable of supporting life, I really wonder what would happen if even a fraction of them had sentient, sapient life even close to the human level.

We have a hard enough time understanding each other and getting our own history and traditions and cultures right without adding completely alien ones in the mix. I spend hours imagining how we might interact and learn each others' languages and trade and do business and live among each other.
