So today my buddy didn' t believe
me when I told him how hard dark
souls 2 was.
So I showed him gameplay footage
of it. And he said it still looked
Mad easy, yo."
I told him I died twice in the

Not really. Especially scenarios like the one you posted. All you have to do is look around, don't tunnelvision and leave your health at like 50% with your shield down in the poisonous swamp. That's just stupid.

Its a yes and a no. The game developers really do put in a massive amount of small details and hint at how to do things and the best way to go about. But your free to take on things however you want. If your not as cautious when you should be, and don't take risks when it would benefit you most, then you'll die more times, but still have fun doing so.

anyone who dark souls is just trial and error has never played it before. There is no trial and error in i-frame roll timing, roll bs-ing, and the melee combat. The guy that got hit in that gif should not have blindly aggro'd excessive mobs and dying to terrain (or trial and error as it is commonly referred as) can be avoided almost always if you're careful enough. Also, when you hear anyone complain about bs fishers and turtlers in pvp, just laugh at them, that is how inexperienced players fight. It won't hold up for 15 seconds in a real match.

tl;dr
ds is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated rapid anal fisting, -5% pleasure, and mostly pain. But very little trial and error

I dunno. I'm just now starting darksouls based off all the hype on funnyjunk, and there are a few ********* deaths I've had.

The Hellkite Drake and the Bed of Chaos are the only 2 that I'd say are pretty bs. You've been through one already, so you should be good for a while. There are very few unavoidable deaths, it's almost always your own fault.
User avatar #242 to #209 - fozzoul (03/14/2014) [-]
When you step onto the bridge, the ground is scorched, wich means something with fire has been here. when you walk out on the bridge you can hear "swoosh" wing sounds from behind, and you can see the dragon when you look back from the porticulum as it comes flying towards the bridge.

My nephew is autistic, but amazingly good at games. (I taught him how to play Super Mario 64 when he was 3, and we've played co-op games ever since.)

I introduced him to Dark Souls, which he hadn't played before. I knew he was good at games and expected him to get pretty far in without dying.
He gets to and beats the Asylum Demon without getting hit, and proceeds to breeze through the game with minimal deaths.

That days I watched him play that game were the worst, because I hated myself for wishing that I had been born an autistic savant.

It's easier to Level up with all the Boss sells they give you, and they amount of souls they give is huge. It's easier to get stronger but it's harder to fight things, without the immortality from backstabbing and parrying. Rolling is a lot harder than it was and getting Estus is harder as well, you start out with 1 charge and have to find parts to make it better. Also Weapons & Armor brake a lot faster.
User avatar #215 to #20 - dragondust (03/14/2014) [-]
Honestly it's starting to seem much harder just because it's so strenuous.
#55 to #20 - telamatoes (03/14/2014) [-]
Only one of the starting classes has a shield. It even took me 3 hours in until I found a shield with 100% physical resist. Rolling is also harder, they greatly shortened the immortal frames. Enemies will actively patrol and it's considerably harder to get one person to chase you without the others noticing. That being said it's still Dark Souls, careful planning and a defensive mindset will get you through most of the game.

#322 to #44 - anon (03/14/2014) [-]
Basically, the game is praised by many because it has only one difficulty which is hard.

The first game was not hard, because you had to think, or because it was actually hard. It was only hard because the enemies are hard to kill while you are easily 1 shotted by almost anything (not really, but you get the idea).

The game is actually easy, but also unfair. What i mean is if you know how to avoid being hit (only method you can do really...) it becomes easy and boring as hell.

If you actually want something hard and a challenge, just get Skyrim and mods for it that adds survival and harder enemies. You'll have much more fun (well i can't say for sure, but i guess)
User avatar #336 to #322 - Compootor (03/14/2014) [-]
Never was much of a fan of getting assraped in video games. I have Skyrim and I've played it rather obsessively, and modded the everliving **** out of it. I might give Dark Souls a try, but it doesn't really seem like my cup of tea.
#102 to #44 - orendil (03/14/2014) [-]
It also doesn't help that back in Dark Souls there was a boss named Bed of Chaos who if you didn't have a lot of Vitality (Health) you could be one shot without being able to do anything to avoid it.
User avatar #123 to #102 - tylosaurus ONLINE (03/14/2014) [-]

User avatar #148 to #44 - acirikis (03/14/2014) [-]
Frankly, if you never played it, you shouldn't really ask over here, as it's full ov overhyped fanboys.
Yes, the game is hard, but it's not THAT hard. The thing is that the games difficulty is set to hard and you can't change it. But almost any other game on the hardest difficulty is just as hard, if not harder than dark souls.

Another problem is that most of these guys who overpray the game probably came from skyrim, where the main mechanic is it's graphics and story, to DS and now compare the difficulties which they shouldn't do.

But to get back to your question, it's hard because most enemies have insta kills if you're not carefull(except for the bs parts where you just have to die several times to get through, but these parts are no longer hard, but unfair). It also doesn't tell you anything except for the basics, so it's really hard to get a hang of the game if you don't watch some kind of tutorial or gameplay.

TL;DR It's not a game for casual players, but it's neither as hard as fj claims it to be.
#46 to #44 - DarkRyter ONLINE (03/14/2014) [-]
The game is much more punishing than others of the genre. Enemies do much more damage than one would expect, the environment is often riddled with traps and pitfalls, and even the slightest mistakes in combat and travel lead to instantaneous, uneventful death.

Of course, careful consideration of one surroundings, proper pacing, sharp motor skills, and keen observation can help you through the game with relative ease. Or, straight up trial and error.
#194 to #46 - anon (03/14/2014) [-]
Demon's/Dark Souls is hard for a variety of reason that you can overcome, while other games are just unfair when you are at the highest difficulty and you have to deal with it. At least i think so anyways.
User avatar #251 to #194 - xxhadesflamesxx (03/14/2014) [-]
a good example of the unfair difficulty is skyrim where they just make you do less damage and the enemies do more without it being really fair
User avatar #232 to #194 - FlameBreaker (03/14/2014) [-]
Right. The whole point of dark souls is to experience things that kill you, and by doing so, learning how to avoid it when you try again.

The background story in one minute: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uItoZfcK524

It's single player as long as you remain hollow(undead), which means you can't be invaded by other players and you can't summon other players to help you either. (As far as I know you can always be invaded in Dark Souls 2)

Dark Souls is the successor to Demon Souls, though I do not really think they are connected Lore-wise.

For me the beauty comes from simplicity and balance.
It is fairly simple, you have only several commands, light and heavy attack, block, parry, running strike and jump-shot. These are the tools they gave you and you must use them. You modify your tools with weapons, shields and armor, each weapon with its uniqe attack speed and moveset, but each weapon almost equaly viable. You can play it however you like and it's always ok, no wrong builds, only stupid moves. If you ****** up, it's your fault, and yours alone. and a great plus s that you never really commit to a single build, you always can switch armor for a difficult boss, switch up your playstyle, etc. If you are a pyromancer and your oponent is fire resistant, you can always take a ******* huge sword and just maul him to death.
User avatar #63 to #40 - angelious (03/14/2014) [-]
well outside of having excellent map design.a fun combat system and a great lore(if you go through the trouble of finding it)

i think the best part of ds is that you actually need to focus on playing it.every other game you just play and you dont really have to focus on it and you can breeze through them much You need to login to view this link dark souls it punishes you for not minding your surroundings and moving carefully.ofcourse this had lead many people to believe the game is the hardest thing to come out ever since admins abs were developed in the beginning of time but its really more about focusing on the surroundings and the clues the game leaves you ,wich i think immerses you into the game so well that you can just play it for hours and hours
#41 to #40 - lycoris (03/14/2014) [-]
Sunbros.
Game just feels rewarding when overcoming a difficult boss or enemy. Lore is interesting. High learning curve. Game isn't actually HARD as much as you kinda need to be cautious (but not scared) while playing. Thinking ahead usually saves your ass. I highly recommend buying it if you think you have the patience for it, best game experience I've ever had personally.
