Never seen Phantom of the Opera before, but I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say that he hides the clean half of his face to further emphasize his scarred half, symbolizing the fact that he views himself as a total monster, or that he sees his cleaner half as the blemish rather than his scar.

I love how this somehow drags out FJ's theater crowd.

They chose the mask for marketing before they had finished the story. That's why the mask in the show doesn't match the poster.
Also in the book the Phantom was missing his nose.

The music is alright (even though the best part is plagiarized) and the story is a bit plain, but might be worth checking out just for the cultural references.

It was also difficult for actors to see wearing a full mask, and noise would be distorted on microphones. Pretty sure a large portion had to do with keeping the play running smoothly.

I'd recommend the Michael Crawford version. But, be warned, Crawford is very hit or miss, not in that some of his work is good, and some bad, but that half of the people who listen to him like him, the other half hate him.

John Owen-Jones or Ramin Karimloo all the way.
The latter is amazing in the 25th year anniversary.
Or else, check out this video where both of them sings:

the movie with Gerard Butler isn't bad, I liked watching it more than watching recordings of the theater performance but nothing beats seeing it live on Broadway, which you can still do if I remember correctly it's still open.

One sentence: 25 year anniversary at Royal Albert Hall
That show is ******* legendary, awesome performance by Ramin Karimloo as Phantom and Sierra Boggess at Christine. And then they got 3 previous phantoms and 1 future to sing after the show, acconpagnied by the original Christine - Sarah Brightman (known for singing "Time To Say Goodbye"/"Conte Partiro" with Andrea Boccelli)

In the real play he covers the scarred half. As edkaelen pointed out, he thinks he's a monster because of the scar. I greatly recommend the play, I love it.

he covers his scar because he thinks he's a monster. anyway you should see it sometime with an open mind, it's got some pleasant music. that or just watch the live theater performance on netflix
