That's actually worse for the Chinese. It would be bad for the U.S. to default and get a ****** credit rating, but we wouldn't lose any money - in fact by defaulting we would come out of debt, so there's a silver lining to the situation.
No such thing is true of the Chinese - if the U.S. defaults, they lose trillions with no way to get it back except by going to a war with a nation protected by the two largest oceans to the east and west, our closest ally and largest trading partner to the north, and a reasonably close ally and large trading partner to the south. Not to mention that in terms of naval and airforce power, the US could take on the rest of the world combined. And we have Indonesia, Nigeria and India lining up to take on our manufacturing needs when China stops. A war with the US is a losing war for China.

In simplest terms, after WW2 the empire was no longer profitable to keep, most of the infrastructure at home and in places like India, Egypt and Burma had been destroyed in the war. Also, public opinion in Britain turned away from colonialism after WW2. As a result of these two things, the British began the process of granting colonies independence, ending with the handing of Honk Kong back to China in 1997. The Commonwealth of Nations was put in it's place, to keep trading ties between former colonies as well as political ones.
