so theres one thing that really bothers me about soccer/football. ties are common. you cant say we dont like low scoring games with how big hockey is but i just dont understand how even on a big stage like the world cup they can just go. "you guys tired? yeah were done"

This is only in leagues or group stages of competitions. A win is 3 points, a draw is 1 point apiece, and a loss gives you 0 points. The accumulated points determine who goes on further or wins the league. Football is a tough, physically demanding sport and like you said, most of the time it's very low-scoring. Having players play an additional 30 minutes after 90 minutes in every single game is a little dumb in my opinion.

why not at least have a shoot out?
User avatar #12 to #11 - mennopauze (06/19/2014) [-]
That breaks the purpose of the win = 3 points, draw = 1 point and loss = 0 points. When it's elemination, there will be shoot outs if the game isn't decided after extra time. Also shoot outs are more luck than skill for, so that's why they don't have it to determine every game.

well not every game. like the nfl has one additional quarter of fifteen minutes and if that doesnt resolve it the call it a draw but thats sudden death over time. first to score wins. i know that cant be done so easily in soccer
User avatar #14 to #13 - mennopauze (06/19/2014) [-]
You could do that, but when players are tired they tend to score less so you could end up with 2 hours of playing without a goal. So that's why they have a 30 min extra time and if it's still a draw, you have a shootout.
The golden goal/sudden death thing could work, but it doesn't garuantee that the best team wins, because a team can always **** up. If you have untill 30 mins. you still have time to recover from that.

yeah thats why the nfl racently changed the rule so that if you kick a field goal on the first possession which is three points the other team gets a shot but if you score a touchdown which is six points and much more difficult the game is over. but with soccer not having something like that it wouldnt work

with Coentrao, Almeida, and Pepe out, and with Ronaldo not at 100%, its entirely possible that the USMNT beats Portugal.
