I'm gonna be honest, I tend to dislike the kind of dwarf that's pretty much obsessed with being underground, kind of greedy, etc.
More of the traditional kind of dwarf, if I understand it properly?
I grew my fantasy teeth on Warcraft so I guess that has been instilled in me as the "proper" kind of dwarf. Mountaineer kind of people, not so opposed to being above ground, kind of a step away from the traditional. Sinful to some, I'm sure, but to each their own, no?
I like Warcraft dwarves, even though Blizzard storytelling isn't perfect they managed to get a lot of the Dwarf staples included but still managed to make them distinct from other fiction where they're just blacksmiths and miners.
I wouldn't think dorfs use axes all that often below ground, instead taking up shields and spears. Not much room to swing a huge two-handed weapon in those narrow corridors.
