fun fact: the Vietnam M16 was extremely unreliable.

Actually it was a great gun for the combat in the jungle.
It had its issues but still out performed every other gun.
User avatar #9 to #2 - pebar (11/12/2013) [-]
I heard that in the early years of the war, soldiers were told they never had to clean their gun because it was so awesome. The early versions also had no bolt assist. So there were a couple problems.
User avatar #10 to #9 - undeadwill (11/12/2013) [-]
#3 to #2 - arlonas (11/12/2013) [-]
it was inferior to the M8 in both stopping power and reliability
User avatar #4 to #3 - undeadwill (11/12/2013) [-]
I looked for the a gun like that but couldn't find it.

#5 to #4 - arlonas (11/12/2013) [-]
m1. My bad.
User avatar #6 to #5 - undeadwill (11/12/2013) [-]
Yes but the M1 was only accepted due to the idea that recruits were accurate shots. This proved false. A large number of recruits had never fired a rifle in their life due to the draft and the sudden change in way Americans lived.
User avatar #8 to #1 - digeredoo (11/12/2013) [-]
im usually thinking thats because of low maintenence.
being that a lot of the soldiers of the Vietnam war were very young, and mostly inexpereinced in the kind of areas they were in, i doubt they'd just kind of know how to clean and maintenence a rifle.
User avatar #35 to #8 - hourlyb (11/13/2013) [-]
It was that the US armed forces didn't provide cleaning kits for the rifles. The would get dirt in them and jam due to a flaw with the firing piston. (I believe)
Nowadays the M16's have been updated and work extremely well as long as they are cleaned.
User avatar #139 to #35 - digeredoo (11/13/2013) [-]
fairly certain the firing mech has been the same since the A1.
User avatar #141 to #139 - hourlyb (11/13/2013) [-]
Yes, but made of better materials, and by machines.
User avatar #47 to #1 - pineapplemcgee (11/13/2013) [-]
The reason being that
A) The military didn't test it in the jungles before hand
B) The military also switched to a cheaper powder
C) Cleaning kits weren't issued until later
D) There was no forward assist on the early ones
E) Dirty mags were a problem
A lot of people stated some of these but I decided to sum em up and add to it. Beyond these problems it was an excellent weapon.
User avatar #57 to #47 - liquidz (11/13/2013) [-]
The gun is a **** design and has no tolerance for dirt... something you constantly get in your gun in a combat zone
User avatar #58 to #57 - pineapplemcgee (11/13/2013) [-]
I have used ARs in the desert with no problems, and as long as there isn't too much oil, dirt in the action will be minimal. Is it susceptible to dirt, yes, but not when properly maintained.
User avatar #68 to #58 - liquidz (11/13/2013) [-]
Dirt and all kinds of crap will get in your mags either way, and thus into your gun.

Would you feel comfortable taking a hand full of sand and throwing it at the action of an AR and expecting it to work correctly after a few rounds?

The gun ***** where it eats compounding the problem as well.
Not to mention a bit too much oil like you said makes it even worse, were as not enough has the exact same problem.

It's a flawed design, just put a piston system on it and watch reliability increase dramatically.
User avatar #78 to #68 - pineapplemcgee (11/13/2013) [-]
True, the piston system increases the reliability. And every design has it's problems, but like I said proper maintenance. Check your mags often, check the oil, basic cleaning after every time you go shooting and it works fine. I mean look at the AK. Almost never jams, insane reliability, and the Israelis were unsatisfied with it's performance in the sand, so improved it and made the Galil. Point is, every design has flaws, dont mean it's bad, just means it has room to improve.
User avatar #82 to #78 - liquidz (11/13/2013) [-]
Oh yeah, no weapon will be perfect, but the rifle requires an absurd amount of maintenance for a combat weapon. For someone at home target shooting, it's fine. But constantly on the move, you have little time to stop, clean, oil, and maintain a rifle that demanding.

I mean the damn thing gums up so much, they made the forward assist. Sure most other rifles you can slam on the charging handle to do the same thing, but it just shows how it was an afterthought and how really haphazard the whole thing is.

Hell even the .223/5.56 round was a mistake. It just happened to shred things apart when it hit them. It wasn't designed to do that, it was an interesting side effect and they decided to keep it. Where as the 5.45 was designed to do exactly that and does it very well and is more consistent.

I'm working on building an upper now that is piston driven and fires 7.62x39 . I just need more funds to get the parts. I just don't trust the gas impingement system to be reliable under sustained and constant use while on the move.

Also another thing... The ******* carry handle on the older models... Jeezus ******* Christ how retarded to still want that design these days.
User avatar #83 to #82 - pineapplemcgee (11/13/2013) [-]
Eh, true. On that upper though, I would like to see that when it's finished. Reminds me of the Rock River Arms LAR-47. Will you have the rails on the forend, aluminum handguard, or regular plastic.
User avatar #138 to #83 - liquidz (11/13/2013) [-]
Aluminum with modular rails for the 9,3, and 6 positions. Going for a 1:7 twist on the barrel as well.

I'll have to tweak the mags as the 7.62 mags for the ar platform are notorious for feeding poorly due to the feed lips and ramp. It's due to the extra dimpling at the feed lips as well as not having a low enough ramp on the mag for the bullets to slide out without hitting the front wall of the mag.
User avatar #140 to #138 - pineapplemcgee (11/13/2013) [-]
I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor and would like to see it when it's completed.
User avatar #38 to #1 - twofreegerbils (11/13/2013) [-]
Actually, because the soldiers were told it was made from SPACE AGE materials like aluminum and plastic, they thought they didn't have to clean it, leading to a bunch of jam-happy M16s in the dense, wet Vietnamese jungle. The M16A1 wasn't remarkably less reliable than A4's or M4's.

Although, most soldiers preferred the M14's, if they could acquire one.
User avatar #31 to #1 - itsmewaffle (11/13/2013) [-]
Well you're ******* WRONG

They more than often went in with M14 Rifles or M60 Machine Guns. M16s were still used even though they overheated like a ************ .
User avatar #60 to #31 - nigeltheoutlaw (11/13/2013) [-]
I thought a lot of soldiers like crossbows and compound bows since the arrows had more mass and carried better through undergrowth?
User avatar #65 to #60 - itsmewaffle (11/13/2013) [-]
good luck killing jack **** with a crossbow, or any bow for that matter.

You're kidding, right? Arrows will **** you up.
User avatar #122 to #73 - thesinful (11/13/2013) [-]
It's extremely rare to die quickly from an arrow or bolt. For example, a man got an arrow through his stomach while hunting in Alaska and survived the six hours it took for a helicopter to fly him to a hospital. Because arrows and bolts go into your body and simply stay put, they do a very good job of keeping your blood inside. Conversely, bullets can bounce off your bones and seriously **** **** up beyond the entry wound.
