The Babadook

This one started out under the radar but due to its huge set of balls, quickly took center stage for the year. A widow who struggles raising her challenged son finds out that they are being watched by a super creepy something called Mister Babadook. Just watch it.

Afflicted

Alot of folks hate the "found footage" genre and rightfully so....however this blows that **** out of the water. A SUPER fun movie that turns the genre on its head. While on a trip around the world 2 dudebros find it hard to deal with some crazy changes happening after one of them is attacked and left for dead. Gritty. AWESOME

Honeymoon

A delightfully gory throwback featuring everyones favorite doe eyed wildling, Ygrette. After finding his newly minted wife naked and completely out of it, in the woods in the middle of the night, a mans honeymoon quickly spirals out of control as he struggles to find out what really happened. Contains one of the sickest scenes since...cabin fever lol. Have fun with this one!

It follows

Like The Babadook, this movie caught fire by word of mouth. Super simple yet chillingly effective, this movie will have you thinking long after it ends. After hooking up with a dude, a young girl is tied to a wheelchair and told that she was passed "something" and that it will follow her at a leisurely pace, taking any form it chooses until it catches her and does unimaginable things. The only way to shake it is to have sex with someone and "pass" it along. Amazing score as well with this one!

Late Phases

I didnt think I was gonna like this one but some great acting and a very unique plot did it for me...A son puts his blind veteran father in a retirement community and soon the man finds out that someone or something is killing off the elderly residents....

The possesion of micheal king.

Ill probably get blasted for this one but its no holds barred bad assness was effective and I love the drearyness of it mixed with the demonology. It also has a couple unique scenes to it as well. After a personal tragedy a man goes searching for any proof of the supernatural that he can find, good or evil. He finds evil.

Occulus

This one was very mainstream but it really surprised me. The thought of not being consciously aware of what we are doing scares the piss out of me. Now adults, A pretty gal and her brother confront the object that shattered their lives when they were kids.

Spring

God damn fantastic movie and I cant wait to see where this director goes with his career. This one is off the beaten path as well but good lord is it a gem. After a bar fight leaves a guy in the hospital, our main character runs to Europe where he ens up on the Italian Coast where he meets a girl who is more than she seems to be. A ******** of genres here....Think of a Lovecraft/lynch/shakespearean blend with some great dialogue and a wonderful premise...

Starry eyes

I thought this movie was going to be bigger than it was but I bet it becomes a classic. A throwback to the horror of the 80's, an aspiring woman in LA has trouble landing roles but after a special audition may have found the role she was created for.....

WER

Another favorite of mine, once it gets going its really something to see. In the south of France after a family is attacked and their son eaten by....something..., a seemingly docile giant of a man is arrested and his court appointed lawyer discovers the secrets of the community and the secrets of his family might have been kept secret for a reason....

Wolfcop

Oh sweet baby jesus, this one was fun. This movie is filled with enough gore and oneliners to satisfy anyone (not to mention a scene that makes a penis do the oddest thing you will ever see) A small town alcoholic cop finds that being turned into a werewolf might be just the thing he needed. Dont go in thinking this had the budget of The Avengers. Its pure B movie fun.

The town that dreaded sundown

Im not usually a fan of slashers but this flick did it for me. Stylishly shot and always fun. 65 years after the brutal and unsolved murders of numerous people, residents of a small town are terrified to find out thats its all happening again....

What we do in the shadows

An absolute clever, fun filled story about a few ancient vampires struggling to fit into mainstream, modern society. Do yourself a favor and watch this treat.

Highly recommend It Follows for people who enjoy older horror movies, while the story itself is totally stand-alone, a lot of the camera shots and music are heavy references to the likes of John Carpenter. I went into a private screening expecting very little from it and was delightfully surprised at its excellence

I will tell you from experience that the real horror starts after the honeymoon.

Well, I'm over halfway through the movie now, but I really like it so far.

There's definitely a "wtf" factor going on here that I enjoy.

I've seen: The Babadook, Afflicted, Honeymoon, The Possesion of Michael King, Oculus, WER and The Town That Dreaded Sundown

The Babadook was pretty awesome, it gave me a few good scares. WER and Afflicted were great too.

The Babadook was a good movie, but the ending was a real downer

Oculus was a movie I felt that could have had really good events and it had great ideas to play with. But, a lot of build up to talk about the story when they should have acted out the mirror play

And just throwing this out there, cuz when the hell am I going to talk about this, "You Are Next" is a really good thriller/horror movie with a really ******* amazing female protagonist.

I watched The Babadook and Oculus and I have to say that they were both pretty good in the sense that they were so out of the box. When you watch horror movies through your teens like I did the waters become pretty stagnant pretty fast and just about nothing will surprise you anymore which is why these little gems that take risks are such a breath of fresh air. Another one I really recommend is an Australian film called Housebound. It starts as one of those regular haunted house tropes but takes a really fun twist. The character interactions are pretty hilarious. If you like horror movies that don't take themselves too seriously and like to put a little fun into the mix, I think you'll enjoy this one.
#11 to #9 - anon (05/19/2015) [-]
Housebound really was amazing. The Loved Ones was good too if you haven't seen it.
#13 to #11 - onlylettersyousay ONLINE (05/19/2015) [-]
I loved Housebound, it was smart, and managed to surprise with it's humor. It's on Netflix if anyone wants to check it out.
#18 to #13 - anon (05/19/2015) [-]
That's where I saw it and to be honest I wasn't expecting much. Young woman with a ****** attitude is forced back into her haunted house, but as you said, it was smart, it was funny, it had really creepy moments that had you on the edge of your seat, it was really a great mix of all the creepy and quirkiness that can be done with a movie with that kind of trope that so many people miss the opportunity on. I think it's a great movie to watch with someone else that you can cling onto during the creepy parts and then laugh at the funny parts with. I love horror movies that kind of take the piss out of other horror movies but are still done in an original and surprising way, kind of like Cabin in the Woods. I think this movie, Cabin in the Woods, and Drag Me to Hell are the three movies that really did the whole dark humor horror thing right and those movies are the ones that really stick out to me as favorites.

I loved The Babadook up until the end, since I felt the conclusion was a little weak. Overall, though, good movie, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a psychological horror film.
#17 to #14 - anon (05/19/2015) [-]
I had mixed feelings about the end and now reading other people's takes on the ending really helped me understand it better. How the entire event had such an effect on the mother, I thought it was really heart warming and was more metaphorical rather than literal. I loved how the mom's acceptance of her son's differences really helped the both of them grow as people so I can see how the ending might not have hit it off with everyone but for me I had a personal connection in that I've worked with kids like Sam and that acceptance can really change everything between everyone involved.

The Babadook was my favorite movie of 2014.
#6 to #5 - anon (05/18/2015) [-]
i went into it with high hopes but i hated it... thought it was awful as a horror movie, although the struggle of the single widow raising a troubled son definitely sticks with you. and that ending wtf? was the babadook supposed to be her dead husband or something?
#7 to #6 - bloggershe (05/18/2015) [-]
The babadook represents her struggle after losing her husband, her inner demons.
Thats why hes kept in the basement where she feeds him. It means you can move on with your life when though something horrable happens, but it will stay with you forever. If you pay attention to the ending scene, where shes doing the roses, you can notice that the whole rose bush is beatiful, red, normal but only 1 rose among them is black and decayed.

I loved the message and the deeper meaning of the movie.
A fresh breeze after the brain numbing horrors we got lately.

shes also the one who made the babadook book she used to be a childrens book writer. Overall the movie was great until the ending all the originality felt like it was ripped away when it turned out that the most obvious path (her being the thing) was what happened. I was kind of hoping for at least a supernatural type cliffhanger but it was just a boring woman who finally came to terms with the loss of her husband and finally being able to stop blaming her son for his death(it was referenced when the "babadook" confronted her) it wasnt terrible but it didnt leave me feeling happy i took the time to watch it

Babadook was awful. I got high and watched it with a friend and while it was creepy and had jump scare moments it was mostly just filled with some irritating **** head kid and a depressing mother being all mopey.

So last night I decided to finally watch the Babadook which we had had on dvd for a while, and because I'm a good for nothing stoner I had some cones before watching it.
The scenes including the babadook were astonishing and amazing to witness. It sounds like a billabong creature but is terrifying.
Would recommend.

Just thought people might wanna know The Town That Dreaded Sundown is a remake of a 1976 film of the same name and loosely based on the Texarkana Moonlight Murders by a man known as the Phantom Killer in 1946. Just thought people might wanna know
