On a side note, the increase in mass effect content is making me really happy.

What does Kee'lah mean? I assume it's a curse.

that's interesting, so they swear by their homeworld. Because something happened to it, or are they just very... what's the word "Home-y"?

The Quarian people used to live on the planet of Rannoch several generations ago. They're known to be extremely adept engineers (a little similar to the Jawas in Star Wars), which eventually led them to create a machine race that came to be known as the "Geth" ("Servant of the People" in Khelish, the Quarian's native language). The Geth were originally created as a singular AI that could be uploaded/networked into several robotic platforms. These machines were used by the Quarians for several tasks, helping them with their daily lives, used as laborers for various physical tasks, used as soldiers in place of actual people during conflicts, etc. The Geth were originally intended to be non-sentient, but the Quarians incorporated a feature that allowed Geth to work more effectively in large groups (Basically a hive mind), and this feature allowed the Geth hive mind to gather absurd amounts of information in an extremely short amount of time, eventually achieving a sort of sentience, after which the Geth began to ask question their masters. At this point the Quarians realized the Geth were becoming sentient and attempted to shut them all down before the Geth would consider revolting, but they were too late and the Geth rapidly adapted and retaliated, eventually winning the war and driving the Quarians off of Rannoch. Basically the main goal of every Quarian is to one day return to the "home of their ancestors" which is why they often punctuate many meetings and such with "Keelah Se'lai".

Rannoch also has no insect life, and as a result the atmosphere was almost entirely free of any diseases, resulting in the Quarians having almost nonexistent immune systems, which is why they're forced to wear those suits in order to prevent them from coming into contact with any type of sickness.

The Quarians were driven from their homeworld when a race of machines they created (the Geth) achieved a sort of sentience and the Quarians attempted to commit genocide on the Geth as a preemptive strike.
