Monsters

Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

Made entirely by a crew of less than 5 people this film has a beautiful pace and some breathtaking shots. Jon Hopkins does a spectacular soundtrack for it too.

The Mist isnt the best movie Ive ever seen, but has hands down the most shocking ending Ive seen on film. Certainly worth watching for said ending. Pay attention to the film as well, because you proberly wont want to watch it again after the final scene.
User avatar #114 to #6 - thedeathaudition (06/03/2015) [-]
Believe it or not in the original book the ending that Stephen King wrote said, " This is not one of those stories where the ending with have the military ride in and save the day." Basically you were supposed to come to your own conclusions about the ending. I believe this ending was an intentional nod at that.
User avatar #130 to #114 - gravysponge (06/03/2015) [-]
It's funny because after Stephen King watched the movie he said he wished he had thought of that ending himself. I've read the story and watched the movie and I can honestly say that the movie is better. It made the ending a proper horror ending, rather than one of those 'hope to the end' cliche ones, and it cut out that weird part where the guy hasn't seen his wife for two days so he cheats with a girl he just met in the store.

Completely agree! The ambiguous ending is what made the book so good. I still wonder what the hell happened after the book ended even though I read it well over a year ago.
User avatar #172 to #162 - luckyspirit (06/03/2015) [-]
The book's ending just felt ******* lazy. It's mostly because Steven King can't write for **** at the end of his works. He basically goes through and makes everything good/decent until about the 80% mark before rushing to the end.

I loved the ending
gives the feeling the reader is part of that world, like if I was in the mist and I found his diary.

I hate the ending so much... mainly because THE BOOK DOESINT END ANYTHING LIKE THAT
User avatar #18 to #5 - mowgaycraft (06/02/2015) [-]
But the book's ending is extremely cliche in film.

They keep driving to a single spot of hope due to a message heard over the radio. It's an overplayed theme in apocalyptic films. The revised ending translated well into film with a grim, fresh resolution to the problem.

It's not often that humanity is presented as capable of handling the threats posed by other worlds. An ironically hopeful end to the story.
User avatar #115 to #5 - bettercaulsaul (06/03/2015) [-]
Stephen king himself said that he liked the movie's ending better and would have used it in the book had he thought of it
#102 to #5 - anon (06/03/2015) [-]
though the book did not end like that, Stephen King praised the ending. I liked both endings for different reasons, and reading the book first, the movie ending ****** me up. BUT. The dad's acting... for ****** sake, they should have gotten someone who doesn't just wail like that. I get freaking out, but you can just tell how forced it was.
User avatar #67 to #1 - badgerclan (06/02/2015) [-]
When I watched it and they said they were one bullet short I thought that there was no ******* way he was going to kill his whole family without the mist clearing and the apocalypse being over right after that, and then exactly that happened. I wasn't pissed because it was ******** , I was pissed because it was the most obvious "twist" in history. I haven't read the book but I know how it ends and I would have legitimately been more surprised and satisfied if they ended it that way.

On another note, if they were one short couldn't they have pressed two of their heads together, put the gun against one of their heads, and tried to shoot two people at once? It might have worked, and even if it failed they wouldn't have lost anything.

Spoilers below, talking about why The Mist was one of the greatest horror movies ever, at least IMO.

That's why the ending was great. Because this whole movie is about losing hope. Losing hope that the mist is just a benign disaster, losing hope of keeping everyone safe, losing hope of fighting back, losing hope in humanity. Face it, if the movie ended with the main character getting pulled off into the mist you would have totally agreed with his actions, you'd probably have praised his strength of character to give everyone the easy way out and suffering the consequences. THAT'S what makes the ending good, because no matter what you think about him after the fact, he was actually doing the right thing.

that's what makes the movie such a good horror movie. Because it actually instills feelings of horror, instead of a bunch of spooks and then a wrap up. And the more you think about it, the more horrifying it gets. Did you notice that the military pulled up from behind their vehicle? They were driving away from safety the entire time. Not only that, since the mist had sound warping effects, what they were hearing as they drove weren't monsters in the mist like they thought, it was actually the sound of engines. They weren't just 20 seconds from being saved at the end of the movie, they were 20 seconds from being saved almost the entire time they were driving away from the store.

A guy and his family you follow through the film survive. They get in a car and drive for hours until it runs out of gas, in the mist. By this time they've seen the basically demonic nightmare inducing creatures, and have a revolver and only 5 bullets.

They make the decisions, and outside the car you seen 5 muzzleflashes through the windows, and it pans inside to see the husband crying and trying to pull the trigger with the gun in his mouth, because they didn't have enough bullets so everyone could die easily.

He waits a bit, sees fire, looks over, and the military driving through, ready to save them.
User avatar #176 to #174 - gravysponge (06/03/2015) [-]
He doesn't just sit in the car at the end though.

Immediately after he kills the other inhabitants of the car including his son, he gets out of the car and screams at the creatures of the mist to come kill him. He hears noises in the mist from his right, and turns to face his death. A silhouette forms, but instead of a monster, a tank rolls into view, and the mist clears off of the main character. He is confused, like he doesn't believe what he's seeing. Suddenly it hits him, and he says "They died . . . for what?" then breaks down as he's hit by despair, because now he has to live with the fact that he killed his son and his friends for nothing.

The Mist in itself may not be that good.

This is spoiler'ish stuff

if you like the prestige try the illusionist, its kind if the same concept.
User avatar #10 to #7 - akulakhan ONLINE (06/02/2015) [-]
I've seen both and I always had this impression that the Illusionist was a warm and heartwarming version of the Prestige, while the Prestige was the cold and gloomy version of the Illusionist. So, like counterparts, two approaches to the same concept. Even the filters in those movies differ greatly: the color palette in the Illusionist is full of gold, yellow, light brown and orange, while in the Prestige there's a lot of white, blue, grey and black. Still, both movies were pretty cool.

A movie i'd recommend would be
"it's a beautiful day." which is confusing at first because it's a jumble of shorts but it starts to make sense.
And "Max and mary" it's a very off putting claymation that i found on accident, the movie left me in tears. It's about a girl who's neglected by her mother and gets a penpal from America (Max) it's a very bittersweet movie.

I think I watched it just based off the poster and maybe the name of the guy who made it. I'd seen some of his stuff before, but I don't know if I remembered that before I saw it, or if I even knew he did it before I watched it. Maybe the description too, but it's not unusual for me to add a movie to my queue based off the poster.

Yeah, sometimes I'm on the fence with ratings too. Netflix shows you what it thinks you'd rate it based on your viewing history and previous ratings I think , so sometimes you'll get a movie that appears to be rated highly, but you end up not liking it.

One of my favorite live action movies is Departures. It's a Japanese drama about a man who, after no longer being able to continue his career as a cellist, moves back to his hometown with a supportive wife, and unexpectedly becomes a nōkanshi (traditional Japanese mortician). There's a lot of stigma attached to his new line of work, so he has to deal with that, while also trying to forget about his troubled childhood.

It has received several awards, among which an Oscar for best foreign language film, and is just a really great and cozy film.

If that's too weeby for you, a movie I recently came across was "The Beaver", featuring Mel Gibson in the role of a depressed man who undergoes a therapeutic treatment of basically living his life through a beaver handpuppet. Psychological and a bit heavy, despite giving the impression that it's a comedy, and I thought it was pretty good.
