Mark Hamill lost a TON of weight for his role in Star Wars. And do you think his phone was blowing up with job offers either? She's got the mind of a whiny little kid. Basically: "I just want acting roles to be handed to me, regardless of what I've let happen to myself over the years." Wake up Carrie, that's not how acting has ever worked.
#161 to #103 - anon (01/06/2016) [-]

"And do you think his phone was blowing up with job offers either?"

Um, yes? Mark Hamill is probably #1 on DC comics/ Warner Bros entertainment's speed dial. Go check out what he's been up to since Star Wars.
User avatar #196 to #164 - novus (01/06/2016) [-]
I should have specified on-screen roles, because that's what matters when talking about weight loss. >>#195
User avatar #193 to #103 - armwulf (01/06/2016) [-]
Mark Hamill is one of the most famous VOICE actors of all time
Nobody gives a **** what he looks like, he will always have a job
You chose literally the worst example conceivable short of Morgan Freeman.
The older he gets the more offers he'll get at this point.
User avatar #195 to #193 - novus (01/06/2016) [-]
Yes he does have a voice acting career. One where NOBODY sees his body. You chose literally the worst example in the acting field to compare, of course he doesn't have to lose weight to voice act, and neither would Carrie.

This whole weight thing comes from a longer story about her. This post is relatively benign, I'll admit, but it has much more history to it. Here she is going into more detail, complaining at length that they wanted her to lose some weight for Star Wars: www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/dec/01/carrie-fisher-weight-loss-star-wars-the-force-awakens The point is, they asked Hamill to as well, and he basically said it was hard, but that's part of being an actor. And he's right.
User avatar #225 to #195 - armwulf (01/07/2016) [-]
I think you have us confused friend, YOU Chose to compare Mark Hamill, not I. I already pointed out that comparing him was a completely ****** idea.

And if you read her article she linked in full, the points are entirely valid and she's entitled to her opinion that the status quo should not remain as such.
User avatar #227 to #225 - novus (01/07/2016) [-]
Mark is the perfect comparison. He, like Carrie, has been virtually off-camera since Star Wars. And he, like Carrie, was asked to lose weight for the role. And she bitched and moaned about how unfair it was to ask that of her, and how they don't want Carrie for her own sake, they want a thinner Carrie.

No, they want Leia. They're not casting for Carrie Fisher to be in the Star Wars universe, they're casting Leia Organa. General Organa has been kicking ass fighting for the Resistance, and it is perfectly reasonable to expect her to look fit and in shape. Carrie's points are not valid at all for that reason. We don't want to see whatever-Carrie-has-become in Star Wars, we want to see a Leia we can believe. Same with Mark. It just wouldn't make since for him to be fat and out of shape when he's been isolated on this deserted planet.

Carrie is right in that it is often expected of actors to change their appearance for a role, but she is wrong when she says it shouldn't be that way. Do we believe a fat shipwrecked Tom Hanks on an island in Castaway? Do we believe a scrawny (Machinist) Christian Bale playing Batman? Would it make sense to see a fit and ripped Kevin James in Mall Cop? Carrie wasn't asked to lose weight because "ew, gross, fat women are ugly," it was perfectly reasonable for her to look the part of the badass freedom fighter, and she's nuts if she thinks movies would work any other way.
User avatar #228 to #227 - armwulf (01/07/2016) [-]
It seems to me her article wasn't about changing appearance for acting roles, but the consistent- "Lose more weight, be more beautiful"
It had nothing to do with physical fitness as you claim, it was focused on beauty, something someone fighting a ******* war gives no ***** about. Your own argument invalidates itself.
If she was asked to get in shape (Meaning have visible muscle, strength, the calluses of physical labor), it would be entirely different.

And your original claim was Mark Hamill's phone "Wasn't blowing up with job offers either", that's what he's a poor comparison for.
User avatar #229 to #228 - novus (01/07/2016) [-]
My statement about Mark's jobs was admittedly poorly-worded, I meant on-screen job offers. We are talking about physical appearance, so obviously screen time is the focus there.

Regarding her comments, I really don't know how you or her want the industry to work. She literally says that the only thing that matters in Hollywood is looks, which is flat out wrong. Look at Melissa McCarthy, she's a very talented actress that doesn't fit Hollywood appearance standards at all. And if they had just cast some attractive talentless bimbo to play Leia that would have turned out horribly. I don't disagree that society places a disproportionate importance on looks vs other qualifications, but in a movie the looks absolutely need to match the settings. Do you really think she shouldn't have been expected to look a certain way for the part?
User avatar #230 to #229 - armwulf (01/07/2016) [-]
I think the issue is how they wanted her to look, not that they wanted her to change
I fully support method acting and realistic physical appearances of the characters
But "Skinnier and sexier" isn't method acting, it's just trying to cram in more sex appeal
Leia is fighting a war, realistically, she'd be depicted with some physical wear - and - tear, you can't just be the pretty princess all the damn time. Stress would wear on her. She'd have some muscle, some experience.

To answer the question you just posed, I believe the appearance of the character should be reflected by the setting.
Her accusation is that it was reflected by sex appeal, rather than realism

I mean it isn't unheard of for a person to have jedi skills without much training. Anikin had a sort of future sight as a kid, which is why he was able to be the best podracer on Tatooine. Also, there were stories of the jedi that were known throughout the galaxy, so it's not unimaginable that she would have known that jedi use to be able to persuade people and remember she failed the first time she tried it
User avatar #45 to #44 - drpenguinz (01/05/2016) [-]
she needed 30 seconds of praxis before she managed...
"she failed the first time"...yeah, k
there are things you fail more often than just one time and the older films kinda implied the force is anything but an easy skill to master.
i mean ok...its a film...its a new interpretation of some dude...his choice...but it seemed just cheap. its not about "would she be able to or not?" ... since its fiction. there is just no quality in a "she the stronkest jedi with 5 minutes praxis....sooo talented"-story. where is the tension? its not there
User avatar #51 to #45 - selongb ONLINE (01/05/2016) [-]
They might be going the superman route, where the tension isn't in the struggle to best one's enemy, but to connect with one's fellow man, which would explain why Rey is paired with Finn, a man who is fault incarnate.

Dear god. you sound like you're reaching for anything to call Rey overpowered, so consider this:
-Anakin AND Luke both were able to fly ships with no practice at all, Anakin blew up a droid command ship and Luke ran the Death Star's trench that had killed multiple seasoned pilots during the run
-She missed a LOT with her gun, especially when she first saw Kylo
-She 'won' against Kylo because he was injured in the side and the shoulder, and they even say he wasn't fully trained

How is any of that "the strongest jedi"? She's only compared against an apprentice, no one said either her or Kylo are super strong.
User avatar #115 to #95 - meganinja ONLINE (01/05/2016) [-]
Anakin and Luke both had experience flying. And both were crazy force sensitive.

Kylo should be on a similar level of force sensitivity as Rey, on top of having much more training both with the force and the saber. Luke didn't defeat Vader the first time they fought. Vader used most of his force just to keep himself alive at all times, on top of being more prosthetic than human, and still beat Luke 1 handed after Luke had received semi formal training from Obi Wan and Yoda.
User avatar #128 to #95 - drpenguinz (01/05/2016) [-]
i just think the film is cheap
there is not much thought behind the story...i dont give a **** if there is "a possibility"...its ****** fiction

You are right. The story doesn't have much depth and has more plot holes than swiss cheese. But If this movie and jurassic world tells us anything, it's that the audience of this age cares far more for the superficial action than a deep story.

thats my point
...but people start discussing everytime and im so stupid i answer them...until they find something to disagree with me and can vote every comment down and act like my opinion was **** from the beginning

Looks like you don't get what Star Wars is about
It's not about epic and superlarge stories, it's about characters and their adventures that make them grow
User avatar #170 to #24 - wimwam (01/06/2016) [-]
>It's not about epic and superlarge stories, it's about characters

Lets look at that first part (spoilers):
Death star blows up one planet.
New "death star" is 10x larger and blows up 5 planets and consumes a sun.

Luke Skywalker is called "too old" to be trained, and it took 3 episodes to go from sand monkey to jedi that is able to use mind trick on a low-level, backwater planet gamorrean guard. All this while under the direct instruction of one of the most powerful jedi masters.
Rey (roughly the same age) goes from scavenger to jedi knight that can use mind tricks on a storm trooper (see: ben kenobi) without any instructions whatsoever

Seriously, what?
User avatar #207 to #170 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
I've seen the movies, no need to tell me what are they about
You just wrote the evolution of the characters, thanks for proving my point
User avatar #224 to #207 - wimwam (01/06/2016) [-]
I put a spoiler for those who haven't. I wrote two clear examples of how 7 is about an "epic and superlarge story" as you put it.

Your point remains unproven, but it sounds you are firmly grounded in your opinion and unwilling to look at evidence, so have a nice day.
User avatar #31 to #24 - cisdroidcommander (01/05/2016) [-]
Oh please, everybody have their own interpretation on what star wars is about, thats why it appeals for so many people. Clearly, drpenguinz have a different opinion than you on what make a good star wars film.

I myself was also dissapointed in the story, the movie kept me entertained but episode VIII will hopefully be both more original and interesting.
User avatar #32 to #24 - drpenguinz (01/05/2016) [-]
its how you tell a story
it was a pathetic attempt of telling a story

you could say the same about "monster girls the anime" or whatever
"its about characters and their adventures"
User avatar #208 to #32 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
That's what I'm saying, story in Star Wars is secondary
It had different enough characters and adventures, I don't see why would you need a Lord of the Rings type of story
>>#31 going to a Star Wars movie and expecting 2001 is a bit dumb, imo
User avatar #215 to #208 - cisdroidcommander (01/06/2016) [-]
I wasnt expecting 2001, i was expecting something new and different. When it borrows so heavily on previous movies it makes it uninteresting for me.
User avatar #217 to #215 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
Fair enough, I was interested in how the characters would react to the story, not the story itself, since it's what (I think) Star Wars is about
User avatar #218 to #217 - cisdroidcommander (01/06/2016) [-]
And thats fine, i also enjoyed episode VII because of the new characters, its just that the story didnt work for me. I still enjoyed the movie and im excited for episode VIII.
User avatar #219 to #218 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
Me too, but seeing how it has to live up to Empire Strikes Back, I'm setting my expectations low, like I did with this one
User avatar #210 to #208 - drpenguinz (01/06/2016) [-]
goerge lucas said basically exactly the opposite of "story is secondary" in his commentary about the new film
he called his films a "soap opera...in space"
User avatar #211 to #210 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
And soap operas are about the conflict between the characters and how they overcome them. Your point?
copypasting from wikipedia

A soap opera, soapie, or soap is a serial drama on television or radio which features related story lines about the lives of many characters. The stories usually focus on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama.[1] The term soap opera originated from such dramas being typically sponsored by soap manufacturers in the past.[2]
User avatar #212 to #211 - drpenguinz (01/06/2016) [-]
"And soap operas are about the conflict between the characters and how they overcome them"
that is called a story
#213 to #212 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
Nope
I see the problem is not that you don't agree, but that you don't understand my point
User avatar #214 to #213 - drpenguinz (01/06/2016) [-]
use basic logic instead of misinterpreting internet quotes
User avatar #216 to #214 - oxidoferroso (01/06/2016) [-]
What do you mean?

I think you don't understand the difference between a movie driven by story and a movie driven by its characters
It doesn't matter where or how the story develops in Star Wars because it's focused on its characters and their reactions

For example, the Death Star, the whole final fight in A New Hope could have been replaced by anything as long as the character of Luke could use it as an excuse to be guided by the force. What it matters there is his evolution from non-believer to believe in the Force.

I don't know if I'm explaining myself well enough
User avatar #221 to #216 - drpenguinz (01/06/2016) [-]
simple
saying "conflict between the characters and how they overcome them" is not a story is stupid

User avatar #40 to #37 - drpenguinz (01/05/2016) [-]
nahhh, it will be more an excuse than an explanation
they had too much story they wanted to put in this film at once...then there was no other way than making her learn it that fast.
User avatar #42 to #40 - bionicpanda ONLINE (01/05/2016) [-]
pretty sure she's had training before, that's why she knows nothing of her past

im assuming she trained with luke and after kylo killed everyone, luke left her on jakku with no memory of her past, only telling her that he'd come back, hence why she says her family would come back one day
User avatar #47 to #42 - drpenguinz (01/05/2016) [-]
uhm well...that would make a bit more sense then
but i missed the part where it was implied she had training? and if she had...she wouldnt have to worry about getting food by this thing at the very start of the film
User avatar #48 to #47 - bionicpanda ONLINE (01/05/2016) [-]
never said you implied she had training, you just said that she became a jedi in 3 days when in reality she was probably trained before this

nono i meant "it", the film
didnt see where the film implied that

She's always been seen wearing that Jedi type of plain clothing, and in that flash back with her younger self, she was in an attire even closer to those of Jedi initiates. Her powers only truly awaken after Kylo Ren decided to tamper with her mind, so Luke may have manipulated her memory of past events.
Even then, I agree with you. Leaving a kid alone in that wasteland when you were bored out of your mind on Tatooine in your formative years is a pretty ****** thing to do, Luke.

sure...
i criticize much i know...

my problem is...most action films nowadays are not many special effects and action...they are just special effects and action, no plot no nothin
and star wars wasnt even meant to be an action film...(at least the older ones)

This is why fame doesn't work out for women in the long run, even for the most successful stars. You hit fourty and bam, you're suddenly unappealing. No amount of makeup can hide a sluggish menopausal metabolism some women have it, some don't, but it can and does happen. In their case, it isn't just an excuse. and aging.

I mean sure if you wanna do the Joan Rivers approach you might get some success like Kathy Griffin, but at the risk of looking like Joan Rivers. And putting all those chemicals in your body ultimately just becomes a potentially fatal and expensive stall.

You pretty much have to beg for work even if you were the hottest **** in town at 25. Unless you get lucky and find some voice acting work.

At least older men can still find lead roles and it's easier for them to look younger until about 65-70.

Hollywood is so fickle.

Nah, I'm a townie.

Our girls are about that level, but very few are more attractive than that.

This is where I expect your average hollywood actress to be. Her and Emma Watson/Stone/Roberts, Elizabeth Banks, ect... you know, on a level of beauty that says "professional"

I know Carrie's more real than half the other chicks, or was, but she's not exactly something to drool over either.

She can be based, but man she is strange.

I do like that she just does what she wants to do, and doesn't care what anyone thinks of her.

Then again, when people offer up criticism, which isn't always constructive, she does go off the wall on Twitter.

I just hope that she can continue to get healthier and be a better person; stop doing drugs and drinking so much would be a good start.
