Avoid using the word very by over exagerating everything!
No, the ******* word exists for a reason.

This post is very annoying, not disturbing.

Use really instead of very. Robin Williams is now rolling in his grave. Oh captainwow my captainwow

******* A, man, you hit the nail on the head. There's a vast difference in scale between the two sides.

Very Clean - a great job cleaning, can't get much better than this.
Spotless - absolute perfection. There is literally nothing dirty about it.

Excellent work.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was ****** up enough to think this.
My comment was going to be about OP's grandmother.

if you're writing a story and you've got a good thing going, then you have to stop and look up a word to use so it doesn't sound 'boring', its the wrong word. Just use said, or asked or whatever, if your actual story is any good, none of that will matter
User avatar #28 to #3 - MrDrProfessor (11/22/2015) [-]
That's not true. The editing process exists for a reason. There's nothing wrong with simple language but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try and expand your vocabulary. At the very least it's good to have options. Like everything else in life, you learn by looking things up. You wouldn't say oh don't learn multiplication you can just add to somebody who was doing work with small numbers. There's a difference between obviously inserting the first word you find in a thesaurus and changing your diction to give more vivid imagery or more enticing action

Fair point, i just always see people writing stories or whatever and they feeel ike it cant be good writing without using pretentious words... i dunno, you need a balance i guess

The issue with charts like these is those words mean more than just the extremes of the words they're replacing. They all have their own connotations that can change what you're trying to say. Very is overused, but it still has its place. Plus if you use larger words all the time you come off as more pretentious than intelligent.

bizarre you say?

no, use both.

Sometimes it's more appropriate to use 'very'. Trying to make such strict rules for language never works well.

Most of those are shared synonyms.

Isn't that the point though? I will admit, some of them are reaching a bit.
User avatar #41 to #38 - vladhellsing (11/22/2015) [-]
There's no sense of escalation. There's a clear hierarchy between words such as 'big', 'huge' and 'humongous' with each being a "very" version of the previous. "Archaic" doesn't necessarily trump "ancient" - some older gentlemen may still adhere to archaic traditions of, say, the Victorian era but that doesn't make them "ancient". Likewise, "occult" has a strong connotation to dark, esoteric mysticism and magic which has a very different connotation to "bizarre". You can have a painting that's both occult and bizarre in nature, but you can't have a boulder that's both big and large.

You follow?

I didn't think a cheeky comment and reply would lead to such a good conversation on semiotics. I agree actually, and that's one of the problems with using more and more precise words to describe something. The more extreme the word choice, the fewer situations it can be used in. The more "very"s you account for, the more exact the word usage inherently must be. I suppose I could have used pre-historic instead of archaic, but I like the sound of archaic.
User avatar #44 to #42 - vladhellsing (11/22/2015) [-]
That's the problem with English; too many words meaning the same thing with only slight variations in context.
#45 to #44 - shadowvision (11/22/2015) [-]
Yep. I have so many word bouncing in my brain that I often forget a critical word in the middle of a conversation. Not that sucks. Something as common as "advantage" even. I then need to pause, and describe the word I'm trying to use. Pisses me off.
User avatar #46 to #45 - vladhellsing (11/22/2015) [-]
It's especially frustrating when you can almost picture the word in your brain, you know what letter it starts with and roughly what it sounds like, but can't get the word itself to materialise until long after it was required.

"Why did grandpa die? "

"He was turned ancient, son."

In this post: funny junk users explain why it's completely useless to ever expand your vocabulary
#27 - cursesnew (11/22/2015) [-]
Or just replace Very with Quite and all of those will sound British again.
User avatar #22 - corsairjoshua (11/22/2015) [-]
Jubilant is a nice word. I should use it more often
