Each year in January, the Cicada 3301 begins. Years ago on 4chan, a mysteriou contest began with an image saying "they" are looking for the smartest people on the internet, and saying that there was a hidden message in that image. People started decoding it, going through more and more weird puzzles that eventually even stretched out to outside the internet and into the real world, all over the world like Japan, France and the USA.

It starts tomorrow, and we can all work as a team (god knows there will be so many people working in groups). Funnyjunkers are all around the world, in places like Russia, USA, France, Middle East, Korea and so much more. We can all work together to fix these codes, maybe for fun maybe because we want to prove something. Maybe we'll give up from the very first puzzle, but who can deny that it would be interesting for thousands of people solving one of the internet's biggest mysteries together?

To the people who tried decoding the image above, guys this was the first one not the 2016 one. Also the trick is that while all pixels are black, some are a slightly different shade, and even then you gotta know what each shade + location means. I
ll post the newest Cicada 3301 as soon as it's out.

Just to clarify about this. First of all, it's all legit, not some 4chan hoax. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada_3301

Second, although several people has said they have "won", none have been confirmed by the organization. The people making the claims have also not been very forthcoming after they apparently solved all the puzzles.

Third, and I think this is most important for all. Although the message says they are looking for highly intelligent people that's not really what they want. The test is basically filled with different cryptograhpy puzzles, and that is what they want. I suspect that they are only looking for higly intelligent Cryptograhist, since the tests are all based on that. Whatever this organization have in store for those that win, I'm pretty sure it has to do data security and the like.

It looks like Cicada 3301 was so complex to the point where the Navy started using in a project called Project Architeuthis to train their own ************ . Also Cicada is on the government's good side, being able to escape multiple claims of involvement with a hacker group also called Cicada and other claims of doing illegal actions.

it involves steganography. basically when they made the image they put a message within the coding of the image so when you use a program to analyze the coding of the image you can find what ever the message was. i don't know how to do this so i don't really care.

Inb4 there is no hidden message or awnser and everyone is being trolled

That's what people thought until they realized there was an actual message and started following it. Idk might be a troll but if so, it shouldn't take long right?

Yea, but you can't deny that it's fun searching for stuff that might or might not be there, and when you actually find it, see how long of a chain of information you can get that makes some sense.
Sure, maybe it wasn't intended for any info or clues to be there, but cmon, it's ALWAYS fun seeing just what kind of BS you can uncover from sheer, for lack of better word, imagination. As long as nothing was fabricated, and something was linked to something else with a good, solid proof, it's just good fun. Not some dumb **** as in:
December 25
December = 8 letters,
25 -> 2 and 5
2+4 letters from December = 6
5+1 letter from December = 6
We are left with 3, there are 2 decimal slots in 25, 3*2=6
Jesus = Satan!

inb4 some mofo comes around all: "Uhhh actually, Jesus was born AROUND Dec 25th" and "uhh something something 666 is not actually devil's number its 616"
#91 to #22 - anon (01/05/2016) [-]
Actually jesus was born in the spring and 666 is a number reference to an asshole king

So the world's most secretive group of cryptographers are scattering clues all across the world which require only the most industrious and ingenious minds to crack... and you want a website full of autism to join the hunt?

Well, this can only end one way. Soon.

Your first mistake was assuming any of us would be smart enough to find the hidden message.
Your second mistake was assuming anyone would be willing to overcome their slothfulness to try.

User avatar #126 - Deavas (01/05/2016) [-]
No you ******* can't work as a team
That's exactly what happened last time
Some dude spent months decoding the thing on his own, and when he finally finished and got to the end, all there was was a message saying something like "shame on you for working together. Nobody wins"
#168 - samoaspider ONLINE (01/05/2016) [-]
So appearantly the first time the Cicada 3301 appeared was 2012
>nobody has "won" or atleast publicly been confirmed winning so far
>its not set up by some basement-dweller as there have been confirmed clues set up
 publicly all over the world, including Russia, South-Korea, Poland, U.S.A*, Spain, Japan
* - more than once in U.S.A

I don't know whats the true purpose of it besides the claimed "finding intelligent people" but I know that I'm too lazy / stupid to solve all those puzzles that require high cryptography skills and overall knowledge.

Also no reward or seeing winners demotivates a lot.
User avatar #155 - sedativechunk (01/05/2016) [-]
For anyone curious, this is a real challenge, and someone on the web has already figured out a lot of it: www.clevcode.org/cicada-3301/

I think the guy got as far as decoding it to find it references something in the encyclopedia britannica that asks "what is my first name?" or something. It's still an ongoing puzzle.
