Art of Lockpicking

It's really this easy huh?

This is what happens when you insert your key into the hole

So how do you actually pick that lock with no key?

Well, what you do is... First insert a tension wrench. (That's the L-shaped tool on the bottom or the screw driver in Fallout.) This will let you turn the cylinder slightly and apply some torque to the lock. Then you dive in with your pick and feel out the pins. You simply need to find the pin that you can push outside of the cylinder first. Once all of the pins are set, you just turn the torque wrench, and the lock should spring open.

Real demonstration

Or there's different kind of locks... some seem piss easy

Or freakin' tough

Lock Picking - A useful guide

I know you've all thought about doing this IRL after playing fallout!

Gotta try this one out
Or freakin' tough

A few clicks here and there, turn and voilà, open sesame!

Handcuffs - useful to know how to get out of these!

Once I had a job as a security guard in a gym car park (it was pretty much sit around all night and do nothing kinda job). They issued me handcuffs and a flash-light for the job. Being a 20 year old student at the time, I thought it would be fun to annoy my GF and tie her hands up behind her back with them. After 10 minutes of her getting pissed because she had to go to work in a minute, I decided to let her go, pulled out the key and turned the lock... ...only problem was, the key didn't work, whichever way I tried it and however hard I turned. Needless to say she got pretty agitated with me now, told me to stop ******* around, but i actually couldn't open the lock. After explaining that i wasn't joking a thousand times, she said we'll have to go down to the local Cop Shop and get these undone or phone my boss and ask him to come and let her out. Neither of us really wanted to deal with the embarrassing questions that came with these situations, so I decided to have a go at picking the handcuffs. Using a bobby-pin i spent 20 minutes (bearing in mind I had no internet for help and couldn't see inside the lock, like in the gif above) and managed to wiggle it into the position you can see in the gif. The handcuffs then sprung open! I can now unlock handcuffs with my eyes shut, but my GF (now wife) has never let me put them on her again... So the moral of the story is... learn this **** , it could get you out of a very sticky situation one day.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't really care that much for the game. It just felt like it was trying too hard. I get the point of the game and how it can be emotional at times, but it wasn't really for me.

Closest I've seen to realistic lock-picking in a game.

I't did fit the gameplay, would have been to much of a hassle unless you can do it quick, but memorizing 4 locks with static pins isn't that much of a lockpicking minigame.

Don't get me wrong it still is the best stealth gameplay ever made though, only reason anyone wouldn't like it is probably mainly because it's very, very easy and not much of a challange.

I know how lockpicking works irl but I could never figure it out in oblivion...

It always silently annoyed me that Oblivion had pretty close to real lockpicking and then they threw it away.

Because someone with level 5 lockpicking could open Very Hard locks if he had played the game before.

You still had to get good at it though, first time through it would be an issue. that's like saying if you play a puzzle game you can do it easily if you've already done it already.

Which you can still do if you have enough picks and the luck to find the sweet spot.
User avatar #36 to #35 - tmgrskat (08/27/2015) [-]
The point of the lockpicking skill is to make lockpicking easier and make you use less picks per lock.
On Daggerfall, you got one try and there were pretty low chances. There were also no lockpicks, it was assumed you had an infinite supply. I've seen "This lock has nothing to fear from you..." way too many times.
On Morrowind, the maximum level of lock that could be unlocked was determined by your % fatigue, lockpicking skill and lockpick quality, if they weren't enough you'd simply get "Lock too complex" and be unable to pick it. Also with every attempt (successful or not) your lockpick degraded and you had to purchase new ones
On Oblivion you could unlock every lock in the world with one lockpick. Just knock the tumbler up until it goes slowly then press click when it reaches the top, big deal. Your only enemy is impatience.
On Skyrim it was both based on your personal skill and your in-game lockpicking skill, it was extremely difficult to lockpick master locks if your skill was low.
#58 to #36 - justtocomment ONLINE (08/27/2015) [-]
But the security skill is just as important in Oblivion. In both Skyrim and Oblivion, lockpicking was accessible regardless of level. But the skill made it easier to access with fewer broken picks.
In oblivion it makes the pins fall slower more often and decreases the number of pins that fall should you make a mistake. Skyrim it makes the sweet spot wider, your pick more durable, and eventually starts your pick closer to the starting position. Both situations are preferable to fallout or morrowind's "oh your skill is too low **** off" system. It doesn't matter if your blade skill is low, you can still equip a sword, ya know?
But I digress. The chief complaint is that Skyrim's system, like fallout, isn't as intuitive or fun. It also breaks from the realism we glimpsed with Oblivion, where lockpicking was based on the real life process.

I was talking about how in Skyrim in you just pick a lock if you the right amount of picks and luck, even with low lockpick skill. Looking over your comment again, it seems that what you trying to say. I thought you were talking about previous installments, since I didn't really know how those worked since I hadn't played them

Makes you wonder why they ever got rid of the amazing lockpicking that Oblivion had that required skill and replaced it with fallout 3's stupid crap that is mostly luck based.

(before I get fanboy rage im not saying fallout 3 is bad just saying its lockpicking is dumb)

really, i think they're just random words, also there's the whole letters match thing, which can be usefull to tell if it's for example an "ing" word, and the ( to ) which removes duds or gives tries, it least i think that makes it more skillful than just dumb luck
#77 to #44 - anon (08/27/2015) [-]
The passwords are completely random

Hacking in fallout is easy as **** if you understand how to actually do it.

It gives you a bunch of randomly generated words and obviously one that is the real password. Say the real password is "Dress". If you pick say the word "Dread" It will say that 3/5 match. This is because 3 of the 5 letters in dread were the same as the 5 letters in dress.

It's as simple as comparing two words with each other, it's only luck based if you are the type of person who mindlessly selects random words hoping to get a match.

i never said it was hard, if you ever reach 1 chance left, you can just leave the computer and try again, a freakin 5 year old could do it if you told him to press words and not random giberish.
User avatar #93 to #44 - abesimpson (08/27/2015) [-]

Its either luck or skill, there are no third categories.

put a rubber washer around the base of the key handle, that way you can try it multiple times without having to pull it out a little bit before each try, and the rubber muffles the sound.
User avatar #69 to #37 - kyubii (08/27/2015) [-]
You can't really muffle the sound of the bump key teeth raking across the pins though.
#14 - recoveryone (08/27/2015) [-]
I honestly prefer the direct approach(door kicking plant one foot on ground, front kick with other just below the lock or bolt cutters), but a useful and admittedly more elegant skill is always welcome....

i pick locks frequently for fun. it's all fun and games until you get basically any knob over 5 dollars that has a freakin security pin in it. (instead of a cylinder like the ones you see above, they're shaped usually like dumbells) and they get stuck A LOT. basically what you have to do is after you get all the pins up, you get what's called a false set, and you have to feel around for the one that's not up as high as the others, and either remember where it is, or hold the pick on it and let the other pins fall, do that one first and then the others. i dont even know HOW to do ones with multiple security pins
