In Skyrim, they use similar marks. Now you know where it is based from.

And it's also done, as mereu stated, because they'll never return to the same place again. At least no good criminal would do so.

And when criminals are in gangs/communities, the wealth eventually goes directly or indirectly to the group, meaning that helping one-another is almost always bearing fruit of some kind, as long as they stick together.

Competition bruh. Thats how the free market works.

Because if they work in a group, the others know not to waste their time.

Because the previous thief has already been in the neighborhood or compromised their identity and no one is enough stupid to stay at the same place for to long or do another burglary. So by helping fellow thiefs you may find a sign from another fellow theif in the next neighborhood yourself. I dont know... just my thought I guess.

Honorable thieves are ones who steal from other thieves. I.E. Sly and his gang.

Then they no longer use the same symbols.

So if I put the Slenderman mark on my house I wouldn't have any problems with burglars then.

Yes, they would realize you are an art major with a minimum-wage job and therefore nothing to steal.

Skyrim. Shadowmarks are symbols used by the Thieves Guild, so that buildings throughout Skyrim can quickly be identified by Guild members as to their potential usage. The symbols are usually carved next to the building's doorway.
User avatar #134 to #50 - YllekNayr (10/20/2013) [-]
I'm surprised there aren't more comments about this. You'd think with all the Skyrim posts Funnyjunk has seen that more people would recognize shadowmarks.
User avatar #65 to #50 - gamernobody (10/19/2013) [-]
Iv'e spent two years wondering what those damn marks are. Thank you.
User avatar #105 to #65 - myaccountisnew (10/19/2013) [-]
I'd never even noticed them until I red the book about them in game. Then it took me a while before I started noticing them reliably. They're in some dungeons as well.

The circle X symbol is actually a ward against slenderman.

Trust me, just look at my name.

well, thats wrong. Its used as a sort of 'portal' if you will for him, as the thought of slenderman causes him to appear, as it says in the lore.
