Driver was speeding, started smart-mouthing the cop, claiming he couldn't prove he was driving and refusing to hand over his license or vehicle registration. So, the cop initiated an arrest, which involved getting the guy out of the car.

I hole-hardedly agree, but allow me to play doubles advocate here for a moment. For all intensive purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a diamond dozen, true virtues are a blessing in the skies. We often put our false morality on a petal stool like a bunch of pre-Madonnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granite. So I ask of you to mustard up all the strength you can because it is a doggy dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge ship on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw everything in but the kids Nsync, and even though you are having a feel day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sick sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blonde eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero taller ants when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around is all around, and when supply and command fails you will be the first to go. Make my words, when you get down to brass stacks it doesn't take rocket appliances to get two birds stoned at once. It's clear who makes the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your prize and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through denial and error but I swear on my mother's mating name that when you put the petal to the medal you will pass with flying carpets like it’s a peach of cake.

First off, sorry for being ignorant, but is it really this easy to rip apart a cars window?
#197 to #10 - anon (12/10/2015) [-]
Yes. Widshield glass is tempered glass and has very little bending stress resistance (not exactly weaker but tension causes certain weak spots or rather weak "vectors"). Sorry for broken english.
User avatar #35 to #10 - heartlessrobot (12/10/2015) [-]
He's a cop. Despite all the fat or short cops you see, the vast majority are strong, including the fat and short ones. Very strong. Like, snap your arm with their hands strong. Because they have to deal with 200 lb thugs who just love to resist arrest.
User avatar #43 to #35 - magicalsteve (12/10/2015) [-]
How difficult do you think it is to break an arm let alone glass?
User avatar #47 to #43 - heartlessrobot (12/10/2015) [-]
Not very but to break it without straining requires strength.
#42 to #35 - newall (12/10/2015) [-]
im not sure how you can quantify the strength of several million people, but, the windows in all cars post 55 are made of tempered glass. If bent, tempered glass will shatter almost immediately into very small pieces.

A small child could break a window in that manner.
User avatar #44 to #42 - heartlessrobot (12/10/2015) [-]
I've seen people hang on them without breaking. I imagine it's not really that easy. Unless you grab it just right.
#45 to #44 - anon (12/10/2015) [-]
if the window is open, and you pull 90 degrees from the windows face, it will break. It's not a discussion point, it's a fact. Tempered glass is extremely hard, but extremely brittle. Disturbing the molecular structure in any way causes catastrophic failure.
#198 to #44 - anon (12/10/2015) [-]
Highly dependat on a vector of applied force. (it is after all under huge initial tension which makes it tough in one direction but very weak in other)
#137 to #10 - ainise (12/10/2015) [-]
I've spent a lot of times around windows and such, due to my dad owning a paint and body shop.

So, Few things about glass in windows. They are INCREDIBLY resistance to outside pressure, which is why >#1 is so ******* impressive. I remember we were given a piece of glass and taught how to break it, incase we ever have to get someone out of a car. **** takes like 150 pounds of pressure to break through.

That being said, From the INSIDE the glass is VERY easy to break. They're designed that way. There's a small tool we call the diamond hammer. As you'd expect, it has a diamond shaped piece of steel that comes to a relatively sharp point. These can break a window from the inside with a 3 year olds strength.

Also, the way HE breaks it is very simple. See, this type of glass is designed to shatter into a lot of little pieces to reduce injury. Despite what you might think, those little pieces are actually safer than large chunks of glass. They're often far less sharp and it's much less likely to cause fatal wounds.

Your Windshields are designed to NOT shatter, though. They have a film on the outside that keeps them together, even if they crack. Windshields, from the outside, are INCREDIBLY hard to break, but from the inside, as long as you can counteract the outside pressures, they're pretty simple. EG: If you're sinking in the ocean, shattered glass moving at 50 mph+ is very dangerous, so it's suggested(if you can) to simply put your back to a hard surface, and push the windshield out with your feet. The glue is intended to not be able to withstand high pressures from the inside.

So yeah. You can easily shatter glass of a window with your bare hands if done like this.

Oh also, off topic, but if you ever need to break a glass window that *isn't* part of a car, Take off your sure, wrap your elbow in your shirt and bash it as hard as you can with your elbow, then destroy the glass around the initial blow to safetly fit whatever needs to go in or out.

Cheers!
User avatar #50 to #10 - mechanicexplain (12/10/2015) [-]
They're designed to shatter outwards, to prevent injuries. With the amount of leverage the officer got from grabbing and pulling against the inward curve of the open window, it was probably just about as easy as the .gif made it look.

Doing this to a closed window, or punching in against the convex exterior of the glass, would have been far more difficult.
User avatar #105 to #50 - luciuseternal (12/10/2015) [-]
Thanks for the info!
User avatar #11 to #10 - echobase (12/09/2015) [-]
Yup, they are meant to crumble like that if put under a lot of force. The crumbling is to prevent shards from forming, which can really **** you up if you're in a car crash.
User avatar #31 to #11 - deadlyfoez (12/10/2015) [-]
Tempered glass is actually stranger than regular glass.
User avatar #12 to #11 - luciuseternal (12/09/2015) [-]
Yeah, I know they crumble like grandma's bones when they take a big enough impact (source; been in a few car crashes before). Just didn't think you could shatter them with just ripping.
User avatar #51 to #12 - mechanicexplain (12/10/2015) [-]
Car windows break very easily when they're open.
User avatar #26 to #12 - roninneko (12/10/2015) [-]
Well, yeah. Glass isn't a particularly strong or flexible material. All things considered, it's weak and brittle. Now, if the window were shut, he'd have a much harder time breaking it because it would be supported on all sides and the outward flex of it makes it more impact-resistant; however, because it's only supported on two sides with its third tapering to a point, it is very easy to bend it WAY past its flex point and shatter it.

Glass is really easy to break. We just tend to like avoiding it because we don't like shards in our hands.
