I plan to watch Grave of the Fireflies for the first time tonight. On a scale of 1 to contemplate suicide, how bad is it going to make me feel?
#21 to #3 - zalda (09/05/2015) [-]
I understand it's based off true events, and yes it is a little saddening to see a little girl starve to death, but to be honest, it was just too slow for my preference.
User avatar #44 to #21 - OtisMcWonderful (09/05/2015) [-]
Yeah. It's definitely sad, and it's a bit slow at the beginning. But I think that's intentional. It feels like the happiness and freedom is brought to a screeching halt by death. Of course, the actual time span would have been a few weeks, but the movie crams it all into the last 20-30 minutes, making it seem faster when compared to the first hour of relative happiness.

I only have one real complaint. Seita's pride. The outcome could have been completely avoided if he had just gone back to live with his aunt. He completely ignored advice from the rice farmer to do so. Setsuko didn't have to die. Seita didn't have to die. He got both of them killed because of his spite for his aunt and his own pride. And the aunt's attitude was completely justified. A nation at war to that extent is going to ration supplies. When you take in extra people, your rations are just going to dwindle even faster. Seita would just play all day, even though he was capable of doing something to help, anything. But no, he'd rather run off anytime anything could use his help. I understand that keeping his sister happy and safe was important, but he could have also helped her by helping out with putting out fires or some **** to ensure that they would both still have a home. And yes, the aunt seems a bit greedy in taking half the rice gained from selling the kimonos, but you have to remember that they also belonged to her sister. You almost completely forget that there's a close relation there, so it seems like she's taking them specifically from Seita and Setsuko. I'd say it was somewhat fair for them to get half, especially considering that the aunt had 2 other people to feed compared to Seita only needing to feed Setsuko. It's like Seita thinks he's the only one suffering loss. **** , basically everyone in the story lost something or someone.

tl;dr
**** Seita. He killed his sister and himself.
#94 to #44 - vaalkyrie (09/05/2015) [-]
Interestingly, that's actually what the director wanted the message of the film to be. From a western perspective the film appears to solely suggest that war is hell for both sides-the Japanese committed atrocities beyond imagination, yet they similarly suffered, including the innocents of the war. The aunt appears to be portrayed as a cruel woman, casting her own family out to meet probable death. The intentions of the director however, while undoubtedly including this portrayal of suffering in war was also to suggest the importance of age and the folly of youth. Had Seita returned to his aunt it is likely neither he nor Setsuko would have died. So yeah, of course you are supposed to sympathise with Seita and Setsuko, but at the same time you are supposed to chide Seita for his youthful naive pride.
All in all one of my favourite films ever.

I think you're forgetting that he was 14, just had his mother die, and his father was part of the much revered military.

Do you think you were making the best decisions when you were that age?
User avatar #89 to #85 - OtisMcWonderful (09/05/2015) [-]
I'm well aware of his age. 14 year olds at that time were considered to be more mature compared to now and especially so in Imperial Japan. They were considered to be capable of working to help support the family.

He was in a military family. That normally provides at least some amount of discipline or drive. He should have helped out. As far as having his parents die, you'd think that would push him to make good decisions to prevent Setsuko and himself from dying, but he just doesn't. And he didn't find out about the surrender and his father's implied death until late into the story anyway. The only family death he knew of was his mother. He had family that was more than willing to take him in, and instead of helping out, he did **** all throughout the story and died.

How I was at 14 isn't even relevant. I didn't grow up in the 30s and 40s, nor did I grow up on the losing side of a major war. Environmental factors are at play here, not just age. I can say that I'm not dumb enough to turn away from assistance when it's being offered in exchange for something as simple as helping out with my community's survival a bit.
User avatar #90 to #89 - AnomynousUser ONLINE (09/05/2015) [-]
The thing is a 14 year old is still a 14 year old no matter what time it is. Emotions run peoples lives during those ages more than any other. Having his mother die just makes him more emotional, especially at that age, and having to sell one of the few things he has to remember her by is not an easy thing.

I brought up his father being part of the military because that would make him even more prideful of himself and his family. During such a confusing and emotional time in his life, swallowing his pride is much easier said than done. Yes, the logical thing to do would have been to stop thinking so emotionally and irresponsibly, but he was at a very illogical part in his life doing what he felt was right.

Yeah, but the guys weapon was a massive disappointment. Too bad that the manga is based off a light-novel, which Edge of Tomorrow was also based on.

I really think they could have done something wonderful by mentioning anywhere outside the end credits what the script was based on. The one time Cruise mentioned it, he never even said the title.

Like Rocky but a ******** better?

Watch Hajime no Ippo wimpy little bitch faggot gets bullied to **** at school because all he does is help his single-mom work at their fishing boat and he smells like fish. He gets the **** kicked out of him under a bridge when a man from a local boxing gym, Takamura "God Among Men" Mamoru is out running. He asks what they're doing to the boy, and when they try to hit him, he effortlessly dodges everything they throw and socks the leader in the jaw, scaring them off. Ippo passes out and Takamura brings him back to the gym to use the medkit they have. Ippo thanks him and leaves, crying that he will never be able to repay someones kindness. Takamura, in an effort to cheer Ippo up, calls him a pussy. Realizing that was a bad idea, he draws the face of Ippo's bully on a piece of paper and tapes it to a punching bag, showing Ippo first how to throw a punch then telling him to try it to get out that aggression he refuses to show. Ippo finally lets all his anger and frustration about himself out and punches the bag, sending it flying off the ceiling. As it turns out, carrying all the fishing equipment every day has made Ippo strong as **** and perfectly built for boxing. Ippo leaves and is found on the same path the next day by Takamura, who says he'll train him to box if he can catch 10 falling leaves from the tree on the path by throwing a punch and catching them, with 1 weeks training. The next week, Takamura surprisingly finds Ippo about to pass out by tree, saying he was waiting. Ippo then catches all 10 falling leaves without letting any fall from his hand, which baffles Takamura, since he needed to use both arms while Ippo only used his left. He brings Ippo back to the gym and demands the owner, Mr Kamogawa, train him to box, saying he will be the Japanese Champion some day. And so Ippo's journey begins

More than anything it's a Slice of Life show. Ippo learns the values of humility, perseverance, and friendship, all while balancing his career as a boxer and taking care of his mother and the family business. He learns to go out and not be afraid of others, even if they are extremely scary and have arms longer than the Golden Gate Bridge with magical stretching powers (People who have watched it know exactly who I'm talking about) or their hot but super nice sister.

47/10, watch it. Without a doubt one of the greatest shows of all time inb4 read the manga we ******* know but everyone is way to ******* scrawny in it

74 episodes in the original series
24 episodes in the 9 years later continuation

Ghost in the Shell is not actually part of the cyberpunk genre. It is in fact transhumanism.
Cyberpunk can be described as how even with all the technology humanity creates to make a better world, it does not change things for the better and people keep on being the same kind of people.
Transhumanism can be described as sort of a discourse on what makes a person human and what it means to be human. Is it better for people to change themselves with fantastical body modifications, such a mechanical limbs? Is that part of humanity's natural evolution? Or is it irrevocably making us shells of human beings? I really find the difference fascinating.
