Nah m8.

The author himself said in an interview he chose the number at random.

Not some over-thought inter-lingual ******** .
User avatar #33 to #2 - lech (10/14/2013) [-]
Not really at random. He said it was a "funny number"
He thought it had a funny sound to it.

Thank you for debunking that ******* .
User avatar #49 to #2 - wliia (10/14/2013) [-]
Well not completely random, there was some thought to it. He wanted a somewhat random funny number. He wanted a short number that didn't end in 0. Had to seem like just some random number.

" 'The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one....I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do'. I typed it out. End of story."

Deep Thought wasn't even planned to say that in the book! Douglas Adams came back and found out that the book wrote itself, entirely UNSCRIPTED! Amazing, right?
User avatar #43 - trevo (10/14/2013) [-]
No the author said himself that he just chose a random number. Why do people have to look way too much into simple things, the worst one I ever heard was the true story behind the Rugrats. What a load of bollocks
#46 to #43 - anon (10/14/2013) [-]
Nowhere in his post did he say that it was the reason that the author chose the number. It's just a fun fact. Relax.

The meaning of life is Math
Math in ancient Greek is to learn
Meaning of life is learning
We whom are made of parts of the Universe are then by that logic the Universe itself,
therefore our existence is for the Universe to observe and learn of itself.

what I had heard was that it was 42 because that's sum of dots of two die, this gives the same conclusion that the meaning of life is "two die/to die"

fun fact: If you separate the 4 and the 2 making tem different numbers. Then translate them into Chinese suh, and ar. Then put the words together, suhar, it sounds like "sidhartha" or sidhartha guatama.

Anyone who's downthumbing this, just remember the following:
In one of the sequels, they discover the question: what is 6x9?

The joke here is that 6x9 does not equal 42, a fact mulled over in the novel as well.

No. That's not right.

42.

It's simple really =/

If it's so simple, how come 4th grade math

6x1 6
6x2 12
6x3 18
6x4 24
6x5 30
6x6 36
6x7 42
6x8 48
6x9 54

4 is not shi. 4 is pronounced yon. Ich, ni, son, yon, go

That's 1 to 5. So, by the method shown in the image, its yonni, not shini.
User avatar #85 to #68 - randomserb (10/14/2013) [-]
Shi is the onyomi (borrowed Chinese reading), yon is the kunyomi (native Yamato reading). Both mean four.
User avatar #104 to #68 - satrenkotheone (10/14/2013) [-]
Shi and Yon are both right.

Like Shichi and Nana for 7 or Ku and Kyuu for 9.
User avatar #70 to #68 - lastweek (10/14/2013) [-]
That is counting, shi also means four, I just don't know the english words to explain it.
User avatar #73 to #70 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
you can say shi but pretty much the only time it is shi for four is when written in kanji.
User avatar #75 to #73 - lastweek (10/14/2013) [-]
Oh, sorry then, I thought there was a reason for it. Japanese don't seem like the kind of people that would have a second way of saying it for no reason. Does it have something to do with special words or such then?
User avatar #76 to #75 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
yeah it depends on situation a lot. its mostly shi when writing in kanji. when speaking its yon. but only in kanji is it 4. when writing shi in hiragana it means city. not sure what it means in katakana though.
User avatar #79 to #76 - lastweek (10/14/2013) [-]
Does one need more than one style to write Japanese? (understanding what they say is easy but I have no idea about writing.
User avatar #81 to #79 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
yeah they have 2 alphabets and the two are then combined to make kanji, the most commonly used alphabet. altough, not all children will understand kanji as it takes a long time to learn plus it requires that you know the other two alphabets first. kanji is a way of making writing japanese faster but if you were to speak exactly what is read it would have a different meaning.

Well you can use either shi or yon (generally yon, so I guess I agree with you).

I'm not really sure when you would use shi... I never really did when I learned it. I only knew they had some silly substitute for whatever reason.
