I myself like to think the meaning of life is to experience, while the meaning of the universe is to be experienced. What meaning would the universe have without life?

I'm not talking about intelligent life, just life in general..

42 is actually how many licks it takes to reach the center of a tootsie pop.
#106 - nagafever (10/14/2013) [-]
pi is 3.14 3x14 = 42
User avatar #102 - jamesdog (10/14/2013) [-]
Separate 42 into 4 and 2

Death has 5 letters

5 - 4 = 1

1 + 2 = 3

Half life 3 confirmed
User avatar #101 - mitchr (10/14/2013) [-]
But... then... 6*9 is equal to death?

Alright, before I get redthumbed to oblivion, that is in-universe the question of life, the universe, and everything. Arthur Dent remarks, "I always knew there was something wrong with the universe. Now I know what it is."

shi means death, this guy needs to get his shi t together
#68 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
4 is not shi. 4 is pronounced yon. Ich, ni, son, yon, go

That's 1 to 5. So, by the method shown in the image, its yonni, not shini.

Shi and Yon are both right.

Like Shichi and Nana for 7 or Ku and Kyuu for 9.
User avatar #85 to #68 - randomserb ONLINE (10/14/2013) [-]
Shi is the onyomi (borrowed Chinese reading), yon is the kunyomi (native Yamato reading). Both mean four.
#80 to #68 - ninjabadger (10/14/2013) [-]
Well you can use either shi or yon (generally yon, so I guess I agree with you).

I'm not really sure when you would use shi... I never really did when I learned it. I only knew they had some silly substitute for whatever reason.

That is counting, shi also means four, I just don't know the english words to explain it.
User avatar #73 to #70 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
you can say shi but pretty much the only time it is shi for four is when written in kanji.
#75 to #73 - lastweek (10/14/2013) [-]
Oh, sorry then, I thought there was a reason for it. Japanese don't seem like the kind of people that would have a second way of saying it for no reason. Does it have something to do with special words or such then?
User avatar #76 to #75 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
yeah it depends on situation a lot. its mostly shi when writing in kanji. when speaking its yon. but only in kanji is it 4. when writing shi in hiragana it means city. not sure what it means in katakana though.
#79 to #76 - lastweek (10/14/2013) [-]
Does one need more than one style to write Japanese? (understanding what they say is easy but I have no idea about writing.
User avatar #81 to #79 - swaggerwagon (10/14/2013) [-]
yeah they have 2 alphabets and the two are then combined to make kanji, the most commonly used alphabet. altough, not all children will understand kanji as it takes a long time to learn plus it requires that you know the other two alphabets first. kanji is a way of making writing japanese faster but if you were to speak exactly what is read it would have a different meaning.

しに (Shini) means teeth.

The meaning of life is teeth.

You do realize, the whole point to this scene, was to say that you a question like that doesn't make sense.

You can't put a meaning to a period of time, or an object.
That's what they're saying.

No the author said himself that he just chose a random number. Why do people have to look way too much into simple things, the worst one I ever heard was the true story behind the Rugrats. What a load of bollocks

#46 to #43 - anonymous (10/14/2013) [-]
Nowhere in his post did he say that it was the reason that the author chose the number. It's just a fun fact. Relax.
