>Guy hasn't read the book
>Doesn't understand the reference.
>Is called ignorant

#26 to #9 - bann ONLINE (10/16/2015) [-]
It's a reference to the book as well though, keeping the people ignorant was essentially the entire theme.
User avatar #19 to #9 - Shiny (10/16/2015) [-]
To be fair, most people that reference it haven't read it either, or know much about Orwell.

Oh. I don't like the comic, I just liked that one pic. Sorry.
User avatar #21 to #9 - lulzdealer (10/16/2015) [-]
He wasn't wrong tho, that is the literal definition of ignorance.
User avatar #37 to #9 - meganinja (10/16/2015) [-]
Technically it is ignorance though...
User avatar #12 to #9 - rwmwaffle (10/16/2015) [-]
I have never read 1984 but I understand the core concept and all the references made about it. I've never read Animal Farm either but I get it. If you haven't gotten to that point of schooling yet or you aren't from america where is it basically required reading then I understand, but if your in your 20's or 30's and have no idea in this picture you need to spend more time at a library or a better circle of friends or something. Read a Book (Dirty Version)
User avatar #13 to #12 - theruse (10/16/2015) [-]
Dude, I live in America and I never had to read this. I'm 19
User avatar #14 to #13 - rwmwaffle (10/16/2015) [-]
which is not in your 20's and 30's. Even if you haven't read it as you get older, understand world and how things work a bit better you just kinda come to understand the book. I'm not trying to talk **** or patronize so I'm not sure the red thumbs are needed but whatever. It's more an indictment of the education system really. But that said, I don't understand why either of you guys didn't just google it? I mean sure, a lot of times people say that and you don't know what exactly to search for. But if you just look at the picture and type "1984" and "cctv", two obvious and important words found in that picture, the first result leads to a news article where this is the second sentence. "It may have taken a little longer than he predicted, but Orwell's vision of a society where cameras and computers spy on every person's movements is now here." Now if that doesn't clue you in on the joke I can't help you.
#15 to #14 - theruse (10/16/2015) [-]
Oh I understood the joke, I was defending the other guy from your idiocracy.
User avatar #16 to #15 - rwmwaffle (10/16/2015) [-]
OK, whatever, defend ignorance and a lack of critical thinking skills. It's your right, but this is why we can't have nice things.
#28 to #14 - sirlorge (10/16/2015) [-]
"Yeah I haven't read the book either, but I think I understand what it's about. Oh you haven't read it either? *Note* He probably had never really heard about it's importance ******* stupid ignorant subhuman! You're what's wrong with this society"

Dude. I hope you understand this: You are a condescending prick
User avatar #31 to #28 - rwmwaffle (10/16/2015) [-]
I was trying to be civil about this. You may be right, I may be a condescending prick. But if the options are that or be an ignorant child who lacks both the imagination and critical thinking skills to puzzle out what the ******* picture means OR use the vast powers of a search engine to look it up. Instead you people would rather go to the comments section of Funnyjunk and tell people about your stupidity? What did you expect sympathy? Grow up.

Read the book, you'll like it. Also read Brave New World.

OH! And Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury's my favorite author.
#32 to #31 - sirlorge (10/16/2015) [-]
Who the **** was asking for sympathy? I just enjoy pointing out other peoples flaws.

Also, the way you phrased your response, you sound like you're implying that ignorance and not being a condescending prick are mutually exclusive I assume the options you refer to are ignorance and "enlightenment". And, sure it would be nice if everyone decided to pick up a book or learned to research using the amazing tech that we literally carry in our pockets. But if you think that's EVER gonna happen, then maybe you need to grow up.

People are constantly learning, and we won't all learn the same things at the same ages or even at the same speeds. There is no reason to be a dick about it to someone who's a little behind.

Tl;Dr - How ignorance, and government surveillance/censorship will **** a society 8 ways to Sunday. It's quite an old book, but it has become true in many rights. The enraging/depressing thing is, is that it is becoming more true every day.
User avatar #6 to #5 - vorarephilia (10/16/2015) [-]
IMO we're on the fast track to A Brave New World
#7 to #6 - anon (10/16/2015) [-]
Explain

I don't disagree necessarily but I'd say we're way closer to being like 1984 than Brave New World. I could imagine 1984 happening... I don't think I could imagine Brave New World happening, at least not any time soon.
#8 to #7 - tapeboy (10/16/2015) [-]
aside from soma not existing we are essentially a 50/50 mix between brave new world and 1984.
User avatar #18 to #5 - greyhoundfd (10/16/2015) [-]
The key to 1984 is not necessarily that surveillance is what will destroy society, but that a government might reach such a point of control that the people censor themselves and actively promote the dissolution of any concept which could be used to defy the state.

In other words, it depicts a future where the desire to promote popular ideas has grown to such an extent that the very concept of societal defiance no longer exists.
#10 to #5 - lujan (10/16/2015) [-]
What's really upsetting about that is that, in the US at least, almost everyone reads it at some point in high school, so you'd think that people would have an idea of what they're doing when they agree with and vote for politicians who are in favor of censorship.
#48 - borderlineparanoid (10/16/2015) [-]
you think the shop installs a CCTV system so if someone does steal from them, they can easily be identified and arrested?

Wrong.

clearly this is a government plot to keep war constant and control our thoughts. Off to room 101 with you.

Meanwhile, in reality: We have ******* crazy people that need to ne locked up, even at bookstores. When the thought police come snag you for *********** about Obama then you can complain about 1984. Until then stop bogarting all the cocks and calm the **** down.
#43 to #36 - gerfox (10/16/2015) [-]

1984 was completely ******** , though. Our governments are too lazy and incompetent to actually control anyone. We've got more of a Brave New World situation on our hands.
User avatar #51 - maidenmk ONLINE (10/16/2015) [-]
The world of 1984 is here and now and we done even appreciate it, even single person has a smartphone with a HD camera and access to the internet. Everyone is being monitored because we are all monitoring each other, every time something goes down in the street someones there with there phone and then its on the news.
The government didnt need to bother to spy over us, the corporations beat them to it and we all do it on the companies behalves.
