Heavy and Gritty, explores the question of who decides: Heaven or Hell? This show hits pretty hard but is so unique and interesting it's definitely worth a watch.
I expected this one to be a generic romance anime but it hits pretty hard. Funny at parts, painfully serious at other this turned out to be one of my favorites and found myself loving every minute. Follows a group of friends who begin experiencing strange and supernatural experiences.
Even if this show sucked it would still be worth watching because DAT ANIMATION. You will notice a certain trend of KyotoAnimation because they are tops. Follows a 'half-youmu' boy and a youmu slaying girl from a lost clan.
A little silly sometimes, a lot of wierd most of the time, but very unqie and VERY pretty. Topped off with one of the best OSTs in an anime recently. About a young girl who finds herself in group of super-heroes called "Gatchaman."
This show deconstructs the Rom-Com genre and produces a story with believable and human characters. The main character is an emotionless cynic which makes for an interesting dynamic.
A very fun and lovable anime. Starts of pretty goofy but takes a serious turn. The show's strong point is it's extremely lovable characters and sense of humor. The show follows a young highschool student 'trapped' in Sakura Hall dorm with a cast of strange and unique students.
The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior
I think it's pretty sad when the most engaging and best animated show of the past few seasons is about... the Euphonium. Kyoto hit it out of the park with this one. Beside being the prettiest show EVER, the characters seem uniquely human and plot doesn't seem forced. I watched the first episode jokingly, but it turned out to be one of my favorites.
Because Sound! Euphonium was so good I decided to give a similar Kyoto show a shot, and was not disappointed. This show is just some girls drinking tea and screwing around, but I was engaged and loving it for the entirety of the 40 episodes and a movie. This show is NOT for everyone though, it can get pretty boring.
Kyoto Strikes again. This show is brilliant in it's simplicity and just makes you happy. The movie serves as a pretty good ending as well. Really genuine and very funny. The story mostly follows a Shop owner's daughter, and her life in a market. There's some weird stuff with a prince too, but it's very enjoyable.
Hectic, crazy, and super interesting. Also has the best outro of all time! Follows a young boy as he makes his life in a disaster ridden New York. A dimensional gate bridges two worlds and a small group of heroes works to maintain order.
Story by the same man who does the Monagatari series (Watch that pls) Unique art style, loads of talking, and a great journey. Follows two adventures gathering a series of legendary swords.
You think that just because the air dates were differen't, one is the original?
The subs that were used by the company who MADE it that live in JAPAN that speak in the JAPANESE language would probably have dibs on 'first' if there was one.
This doesn't even make sense. The subs aren't always by Japanese companies and especially not the ones who made Space Dandy, since the subs are only available online for free, making the studio no money.
Even if your argument was valid, which its not, it would be the raw Japanese dub that would be the original. However, Space Dandy was intentionally aired in America first, making it the original.
That was my personal opinion, I don't really like moeblobb-ish animes where the plot revolves around Mio eating strawberry cake and doing cutesy stuff. I haven't really seen the others, so I can't really comment them.
The reason I think K-On is far better than several of the otehrs is because of the male/female relationships are done horribly, it's done amazing in Hibike, but if it follows the novel that will go to **** aswell.
I just watched episode 11 of Euphonium and it seems like they have gone back to what made it great, but we'll see if it follows the novel or not in the last episode.
While there is no real over-arching plot, each episode is has its own nicely contained plotline. The plotlines are fairly simple, which you may think is bad, but that's just the general idea of the show. Each character is very likeable and fairly well done without going into extreme detail. Most people have trouble finding reasons to hate a single one. The humor is also well done. It's light but enjoyable, and it's far from overbearing. For a show with basically no action, the animation is also nice. And contrary to what you may think, the move doesn't just take all of that and stretch it over a longer period of time. In fact, I'd say that it's better than quite a few of the episodes. Good enough? I mean, it's better than just saying it's a fun show.
All in all, it's a very enjoyable series if you're into this type of show. I'd say it deserves to be in the list. What you're forgetting is that all lists like this are entirely subjective. You may not like everything in it, someone else may only like a few shows, and another person may hate anime entirely.
The main reason I've seen people give for hating it is that the plot is almost non-existent. I can understand that. Some people people just need a bit more substance to their entertainment.
Sure, but there are plenty of shows that people love without an overarching plot. Though I would argue that the character arcs that progress throughout the show act as the story arc. Another reason might be because it's a little too cute for some people. I think K-on might just be one of those shows that people love to hate.
this may sound shortsighted but many of them look too girly and moeblobby to me.
may be they are "actually good", but artstyle discourages me to try.
I dropped K-ON after watching several episodes.
I'm talking about the artsyle and my definition of girly is cute big eyed girls seriously, good anime doesn't need them
12/16 of them look girly to me
And last one looks like yaoi
>any anime
ever watched Hokuto no Ken, Paprika, Paranoia Agent and Perfect blue?
there are a lot of anime that features rather realistic faces.
and I wouldn't call Ghibli movies girly, they are not unnecessarily cute.
if K-ON and Sakurasou aren't girly, I don't even know what is.
Hokuto no Ken or First of the North Star is my ******* JAM.
I was worried because I never saw an anime made in the 80s, but HOLY **** is it good. Like damn. Not to go straight to the cheap shots, but it looks better than anything on the list imo.
Every episode I watch of it makes me want to play that Dynasty Warriors clone just to hear it dubbed.
yeah I ****** love it too.
simple and powerful story, superb voice acting, epic music and total *************** .
Kenshiro never whines, cries or fails. he solves everything with his fists and rage.
I wish Shinji learns one thing or two from him...
and what I love most is that everyone is so dead serious and still never fails to be funny.
<-- play this song while lifting and you never fail
Alright.. Just thumbed your comment down because I don't agree with your view on sakurasou or K-On as girly. To me what makes an anime look girly is bishounen or hunky looking male characters. For example Ouran Higschool Host Club, or Free!. The cute character designs of K-ON and such is aimed to appeal to guys.
I do understand not liking an anime for it's art style.
oh so that was about the definition of the word? alright then.
>Ouran Higschool Host Club, or Free!
I think an appropriate adjective for them is gay. I've never watched them but I googled and what came to my mind was that word.
>The cute character designs of K-ON and such is aimed to appeal to guys.
yeah I understand, because some guys like cute things.
and that's what I call girly: opposite of manly.
I never think those "cute girls doing cute things" can be considered as manly.
you are totally entitled to your taste, I'm not saying it's bad or anything.
as I already mentioned so many times, I'm talking about what it looks like.
<-- I would be lying if I call it manly.
and I'm not the only one that uses the word "girly" to describe those anime.
Internet taught me to use this word. please tell me the right word if you think it's inappropriate.
I just tend to go by the demographic tags shounen, shoujo, seinin, and josei.
Shounen meaning it's aimed towards male viewers. Usually with the more well known anime styles and cute female characters. (such as Sakurasou)
Shoujo being the opposite, aimed at girls and with feminine handsome male characters. (Such as Free!)
So basically, When I think girly, I think shoujo. And manly I think shounen or seinen (which generally has the darker or more realistic looking art styles, such as the animes you mentioned in your earlier post.)
But I see your point. And now understand why you'd describe the art style as girly.
I should also mention why I thumbed down your comment on #84 is simply because you said katanagatari looked like yaoi. Which it is absolutely not. It's also one of my all time favorite animes.
and as I said, I'm talking about the artstyle, not what it is about.
if an effeminate boy is surrounded by big-eyed girls, I think it's girly enough.
maybe my definition of girly and yours is different. but you'd better consider that's exactly the reason some people dislike anime.
***** you want some action? Watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Fate/Zero, Kill La Kill, Cowboy Bebop, Appleseed Alpha, Code Geass, Claymore, Shingeki no Bahamut, Ghost in The Shell, or Zetsuen no Tempest.
I have no idea about jojo's BA, but Berserk probably has the most action. that show/manga was just one bloody as **** battle to the next with people being slashed apart, epic battles with demons, tons of 1v1 duels and castle sieges.
To my knowledge, no. It was animated by MAPPA as a promotion for Cygames card-based video game Rage of Bahamut. What it has to do with cards I have no ****** clue. But hot damn is it one of my favorite shows. It also has a great intro.

Why'd he put this on a list of good anime, that's just insulting to this anime's perfection.
>actually good anime
>these
I get it. Recommending Cowboy Bebop over and over and over again gets tiring, but that doesn't make Chaika the coffin princess any less trash.
The gatari series is a stupid series made for unintelligent ***** so that they can pretend that their extremely shallow and retarded story has some depth and meaning. It doesn't. Get over it.
You are still free to like it, but you should realize just how stupid it is. It's like the people who call inception the an "intelligent" movie. Just because you're stupid and get impressed by simple **** , doesn't mean it's intelligent.
Inability to understand? You must be legitimately retarded to think that it doesn't mean anything, when you mistakenly presumed that Katanagatari was the same as the Monogatari series.
These are like a weeb's wet dream. Just from the art style you can tell this guy is probably the type with a waifu. I can understand why some people say anime is trash if this is the best to offer them.
Your list is decent. I'm particularly happy you mentioned Beyond the Boundary. I loved that particular one and the art was gorgeous. I like seeing that people are adding their own in the comments so I'll throw a few out there.
Your Lie in April You want a touching story with decent comedy and some lovely classical pieces? This is a show for you.
Ben-To The plot is so damn stupid that if it were a person it'd have to wear a helmet and have oven mitts taped to it's hands. However, it's fight sequences are glorious, the soundtrack is alright and it's good if you want some stupid mindless fun while you're between more serious shows.
Psycho-Pass Did you ever see the movie Minority Report with Tom Cruise? The first time I watched Psycho-pass I was immediately reminded of that movie, despite not having seen it in years. It was written by Gen Urobuchi, so expect blood and depressing bits.
Baby Steps It's a sports anime about tennis. Now, before you think "Hey, I've already watched Prince of Tennis, why would I watch another one of those shows?" you should realize that Baby Steps is far more realistic in its portrayal, from the amount of time and work it takes to condition your body to handle a particular sport, to the different realistic player types whose styles our protagonist has to eventually overcome. The general likability of our well organized (If a little generic) protagonist also is a pretty big plus.
dont watch one piece, read it instead. so much better it'll prob be another year before the anime has finished dressrosa, where the manga has finished it soon (either next chapter or the chapter after).
i mean obviously they will surely put some more budget in it since it's the most important moment of the whole arc, i'm gonna watch the **** out of it but i just dont like when they decide to make 3 episodes of 1 manga chapter ussop's haki, luffy's red hawk, doflamingo recovering
the whole episode was 3 or 4 ******* pages, that Red hawk was dissapointing to me the fishman's island one was way better i'm mad that they are going to do 4 episodes of 1 chapter
it is slow, I agree. but so far it's pretty much the most interesting thing to happen since Marineford.
I think Dressrosa is so slow because it's setting up fur so much **** to go down in the near future. Sunny part of the crew & Big Mom, Sabo and the part of the RA in the great scheme of things, potential ally crews for the straw hats, Issho's plan to disband the Shichibukai... the list is long
that's a bit of an exaggeration
V not a spoiler V but i get it 700 episodes is a bit much, i wish they would start on a remake with unimportant **** removed so i could get more friends into it
yea. If they made an 48 episode of one piece removing all the unnecessary bosses and antagonists, make animation much better and smoother, and separate it into 2 seasons, i would definitely watch it.
the thing is that the one piece manga is way too big latest chapter was 790 and there's still 10 years or so left and you just can't summarize all that **** in 48 episodes. Also, Toei loves filler
there is no chance that one piece will ever be under 100 eps, even if they did remake it. most of what is shown in the anime is complete canon, the longest filler would be about 10-15 eps. reading the manga is a lot quicker than watching the anime, which stretches out too much, its their way of doing it so you don't get filler as much.
admiralloli the anime won't be finished in 2-3 years, it'll take at least 6-12 months for the anime to catch up to the manga right now, and apparently the story is just past half way.
>Actually good anime comp
>Not including Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing Ultimate, Gurren Lagann, Bacanno, One Piece, FMA, Black Lagoon or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Dude, everybody already ******* knows that those are good. Whether or not you like what OP listed, you gotta give him credit for at least breaking the mold a bit.
This. The list looks fairly moe-centric. Something I wouldn't consider "actually good" but eh, I'm just judging from what little I actually know about the animes.
