I know I'm kind of stupid for not knowing, but I've never quite understood where the water comes and goes during tidal changes. Anyone care to explain? Sciencexplain?

It becomes high tide on the other side of the world.

you know how in avatar the moon is know as the first water bender. you get high tide at night because gravity. low tide is basically hide tide on the other side of the planet.
User avatar #91 to #8 - wtfduud (12/27/2015) [-]
No, It's high tide on both sides of the moon, and low tide inbetween.

I'm not sure anymore man i thought it was to do with moons gravity but now the earths rotation and the sun have stepped in and I'm not sure anymore.i dont like to talk out of my ass and I'm too busy to do some research. so ill just leave it at i dont know

I think it's a cumulative effect of the moon's gravity and earth's that causes the pile of water on the opposite side of the moon

the water is held near the equator, because the moons gravity holds a majority of the water on planet earth in the equator. the moon has a bundle of water between it self and the place on earth that is closest to the moon at that specific time. and on the opposite side, less water accumulates because a lot of it is held between the moon and the closest place on planet earth to it. as the earth rotates the bundle of water moves, because the moon is relatively stationary during during the earths rotation. although it does move, it does so very little during each day.
#115 to #105 - anon (12/28/2015) [-]
It also has a pile of water on the exact opposite side of the planet as the moon. the low tides are 90 degrees on either side of the planet closest to the moon

The moon's gravity makes it kind of bulge out from the earth. It's kind of hard to explain, but there are some good images if you google it.

Moon has gravity, pulls the water up, then orbits the planet and pulls it a different direction, pulling it down. Esentially , all the water is trying to move towards the moon and swells up in the closest spot as all of the ocean moves toward that spot slightly. Crazy things happen whe you have a lot of matter interacting with another lot of matter.
#27 to #7 - anon (12/27/2015) [-]
That's actually a common misconception.
Tides are due to the Earths rotation, not gravitational influence from the moon.

User avatar #35 to #34 - therealmaster ONLINE (12/27/2015) [-]
It's both actually.

"Tides are the result of the gravitational attraction of the sun and the moon on the earth."

www.ndbc.noaa.gov/educate/tides.shtml
#67 to #35 - ketiw (12/27/2015) [-]
lol it's wrong and it's .gov it's not a gravitation attraction

Did you even watch the video you linked?

youtu.be/pwChk4S99i4?t=286

The moon does have an effect on the Earth's tides, but tides don't solely exist because of the moon. The amount surface area of the water is responsible for the amount of movement we see in ocean tides.
#74 to #71 - ketiw (12/27/2015) [-]
man it's not the facts that people get wrong (moon cause tides) it's the explanation (moon sucks water on it's side) that people get wrong. I also want to add that by the time i contributed on this topic for the first time anon #7 had a negative thumb karma.

User avatar #30 to #27 - stanpede (12/27/2015) [-]
all right, Galileo. You're wrong and just admit it...
User avatar #100 to #27 - beardgasm (12/27/2015) [-]
False. The gravity of the moon is one of the major influences on the tides. The Earth's rotation also plays into it.

Okey I want to settle this for once. Tides are NOT caused by gravitation PULL. If you want to know why play this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwChk4S99i4 Yes it's caused by moon and earth rotation, but it's not because gravity LIFT or STRECH water towards the moon. It's because accumulative sideways traction it's being squeezed towards the earth-moon line.

Can OP please stick it so people will stop getting the facts right but explanation wrong?
User avatar #85 to #66 - defski ONLINE (12/27/2015) [-]
OP didn't imply anything about how tides work, so how is your post relevant?
User avatar #112 to #85 - dirtynig (12/28/2015) [-]
OP didnt have to imply **** all, its common sense and retards should be educated about it, or else were dooming the human race to retardation
User avatar #106 to #66 - beardgasm (12/28/2015) [-]
Correct. I'm not sure I would use the word traction, but the water bulges out because the rotation of earth and the gravity of the moon cause the water to be squeezed out from the sides. There was a diagram in that video you linked that was really great at showing it.

People probably just use the 'pulling' explanation because it's so much easier to explain and understand if you don't have much knowlege about physics and rotational forces.
