2000 year old seed - > plant had been extinct for 1800 years. 2000 or 1800, which is it? Checkmate Atheist I'm not actually retarded
#41 to #34 - Rascal (04/28/2014) [-]
Dude, the seed could have been dropped 200 years before the last plant died.
#39 to #34 - Rascal (04/28/2014) [-]
Isn't it really just a 2040 year old seed because 2000 + 40 = 2040 and nothing was alive then because time starts at 0 and it's 2014 so there really is no seed and this post is fake. Atheists never win because they are wrong in thinking like they do. I'm going to be an astronaut one day

The one from the legitimate article says its an Israel variety that went extinct in 500 AD. Yes other varieties still existed in the rest of the middle east but these ones were specifically used during the sieges on the Masada fortress.

Then it wasnt extinct.

For a species to be extinct all its members must be dead.
The seeds were alive, dormant in seed form, but still alive keeping the species alive.

Yeah, well, Coelacanths were thought to have been extinct for hundreds of millions of years until a fisherman caught one a couple decades or so ago.

Reminds me of that one plant the Romans used to eat as a contraceptive, it was apparently so effective the Romans caused it to go extinct.
Only difference being there are no more seeds left, which sucks for us.

Were they 2000 years old in 1965, or in 2005 when they were planted? I need clarification because of my obsessive need for clarification!

The correct answer is yes. 2000 years old is only the approximate age of these seeds. We don't know the exact date so lets say it's between 1750 to 2000 years old from when they were found.
