It's really a lot less, you don't even share 99% of your DNA with your mom.
User avatar #43 to #24 - TheExile (04/26/2014) [-]
I hope you're kidding. You share more than 99% of your DNA with complete strangers. 99% is shared with chimps. You have 100% of your mother/father genes in you, but only ~50% are active in you. It just depends on how your alleles are arranged, if you took after your mother or your father more.

According to wikiAnswers, we also share 99% with dolphins. No source though. Although I could not find any actual numbers on any articles, it's well agreed on that we share over 95% of our DNA with dolphins. 25% is shared with daffodils.

User avatar #87 to #43 - deepgreen (04/27/2014) [-]
This is worded rather poorly. You don't have 100 percent of your father/mother's genes. Unless you are just aiming at genes in general, then everyone almost has 100 percent of everyone's genes. Also your comment of only around 50 percent of your genes being active in you, is really confusing. You inherit 23 chromosomes of your mother and 23 chromosomes of your father and (ignoring cross-over events), they are almost identical to a haploid of your parents (i.e. one unique set of your parents chromosomes 1N). Only if you're a girl, 50 percent of your X-chromosome is inactivated. And perhaps you were referring to a transcriptional inactive state of your genes, however I'd like to see some sources for this 50 percent number if that's the case because I've never heard of that before.

Furthermore, genes differ only in a few base pairs such as SNPs or short repeating sequences such as short tandem repeats (there are other variations as well such as deletions, insertions, VNTRs,...), this is why there is less than 0.01 percent variation between individuals. However, this small percentage does have a strong influence phenotypically.

Pretentious: attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.

Dr. House is acting like he knows more than he actually does to seem witty. Normally, Dr. House uses facts that he knows because he's such a good doctor or whatever, but because the writers misunderstand genetics, he tries to sound smart by saying something incorrect. That's not a characteristic of House. He may be full of himself, but he has reason to be. Just saying.

but numbers are entirely relative..

lets say your cutting a 100 inch piece of wood, and you are off by .1%,you probably wouldn't even notice that .1 inches at the end...

now imagine they build a bridge... thats supposed to be 1000 feet long but instead its only 999 feet long. There would be a 1 foot gap at the end, which would make traveling over it with any kind of speed, quite dangerous ...

User avatar #79 to #67 - thepandaking (04/27/2014) [-]
well I think marcalo 's point is that House's point he was trying to make was "if her DNA was off by 1 point it would be super serious, so why not check her heart if oxygen saturation is off by 1?"
and the response to that is simply "because it's not her DNA... and this is a common occurrence for oxygen saturation"

Am I going to get downvoted to all hell if I say that the Santorum quote is valid? The romantic aspect of marriage is a very modern construct, reducing the system down to an emotion. It was originally intended to be a companionship for life. The term "partner" is very accurate in describing the dynamic two married individuals saw each other. They took on life together side-by-side. Am I wrong in saying that we've forgotten that? That it has recently become just the sensation of being in love and nothing more?
User avatar #83 to #6 - nigeltheoutlaw (04/27/2014) [-]
Okay, I think that's a valid point, but to use it as a reason to not let gays marry is still equally retarded even when you look at marriage through that lens.
User avatar #11 to #6 - LTB (04/26/2014) [-]
You are correct in saying a Romantic relationship view of marriage is a modern idea, but the reason its so ridiculous when he says it is that he believes that's a bad thing and we shouldn't let it become that.

Rhetorical question: If everyone is sad, and everyone hates it, and everyone knows everyone else hates it... then why is nobody beginning to coordinate an effort to eliminate the problems that are causing the sadness?

Depression is usually caused by two things: poor health (usually diet), and chronic, low-grade, vague stress.

Watched this video ~5 years ago in the ******* MARIANAS TRENCH OF DEPRESSION, and it showed me the ************* light: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOAgplgTxfc

How to solve?

1a. Create a mini-sanctuary where you have time and space enough to THINK, calm down, and gather your thoughts.
1b. Nail down health issues ASAP - food is key. Eat ****** food, feel ****** . Easy as that.

2. When you have some wiggle-room, and you don't feel like you're dancing on hot coals every day, the next priority is to A] make a hard, definitive list of problems, and B] formulate a plan to solve said problems (researching if you must).

3. Constantly keep a rolling list of Life Priorities, and be honest with yourself about if you really want said priorities or NOT.

As children of this world, we have inherited MANY UNIQUE and TOUGH problems - i sense a fury in our generation to solve them... but if you 'accept' the problems, you will quit the fight before it even gets underway.
User avatar #117 to #111 - tearsoblood (04/27/2014) [-]
Nobody begins to coordinate an effort to eliminate the problems that are causing the sadness because ain't no body got time for that.

take me for an example, a 22 year old guy with no gf, struggling to get graduated from a ****** Engineering school to work in a ****** job in a country that pays engineers less than waiters are paid in the USA

a mini sanctuary? I'm working on my graduation project now, I so don't have time to work on that **** that I started dreaming of solutions, designs and other **** just so I could have enough time to finish it.

My finals were supposed to be June 7th and Midterms on April 24th (that's yesterday). Suddenly they thought it's a good idea to cancel all midterms and start finals on May 3rd. When did they think of that? a week ago. We had to go on strike just so they'd back on it and change it back to the way it was, but that only happened last Tuesday. Yes my dear, they informed us that we have our midterms on this Saturday just last Tuesday. Have any idea how hard we rushed our studying for our fake finals?

I tried to go on a diet before, lost a lot of weight on the first 3 weeks. Until my mother decided to make all the greasy food again, she'd make fried fish and fried rice then denies she used oil at all, claiming that she used our microwave to fry them, although the microwave was broken 3 months prior.

Making a hard definitive list of problems would take a whole month. From being too lonely to having ****** friends and a cheating ex. all the issues I haven't dealt with and have no time to deal with. I really don't have time for that. Not to mention making a plan to solve these problems.

Life priorities? that I find enough food everyday (mother won't even cook when there's food in the fridge), getting graduated and getting a job, not join the obligatory army service. All these are things I can't make happen faster or affect in any possible way.

I'm thankful for your effort but it's easier said than done, believe me I tried.

We (i.e. people who aren't satisfied with the way things are and are willing to fight for more) need to reach out and find each-other... and start solving some of the **** that's making our lives terrible.

"For every thing that must go right, there's a million ways it can go wrong... and for every thing that goes wrong, there's another trillion ways to set it right."

Don't be sad - just solve the problems First in your head, Then in the real world.

People do not like putting effort into thought.

The sensation of expending Calories inside one's BrainMeats is terrifying to many, MANY people - you can see it in their eyes and body language as thoughts start to form. It's really pathetic, actually - like watching a retard struggle with a problem. No Euphoria intended.

Don't let it get to you.

There are many, many good people out there. If you want to make a Nucleus of People around you, spend the time to find those Quality People - your relationships with them will be meaningful and productive.

Such people are probably in the minority on Earth - but there's more than enough such people to keep each-other company and to do Good Things while they're alive together.

Then there was civilization and rich people wanted nice wives, so they started buying them. That's when it became a dowry type deal.
